I made this welding machine so i can use it at the cottage where i have no electricity, i will also add a converter so i can power other things. I respect all mechanical thinkers and inventors and those who aspire to make or invent something. For that you deserve a thumbs up. However for me If i was in a third world country and needed a welder and would have no chance of getting one but had these parts available, then to me this is the only way that would be a great idea. Being a welder for 40 years...and just speaking for me.... I think it best for me to leave the welding machine design to Miller, Hobart, Lincoln, Esab, HTP etc. Not only for supreme welding function but for welding safety also. You do deserve praise however for your mechanical thinking. I see how you use your ingenuity to make things out of left over parts or pieces that are usually "one off" and your idea, and i like that type of thinking. Thank You!

36 years ago I got my first job as a welder at a fence company. The company had an old commercially made portable welder very similar to this. Forget the brand, but it was simply a Briggs & Stratton engine with the shaft coupled to a GM alternator in a steel cage. No regulator, no battery and no rectifiers in the alternator. Obviously AC output, and I don't remember what it's maximum output was. Probably no more than 80 amps.

For people who like this sort of project, it’s important to note that delicate electronics like a laptop computer need a clean, square sine wave input. This generator will not provide that. It will give dirty power, which can damage many electrical devices. So if you build something like this, you will need to install a sine wave filter. They’re not cheap. If you’re only going to draw DC current, and then run it through a high quality inverter, that’s fine. But really good inverters aren’t cheap either.

Many years ago I ran tests on trying to weld with car batteries. Car batteries are chemical power sources and have totally flat DC output. No pulse whatsoever. This makes it hard to arc, in fact it doesn’t arc at all. Test I did in 1980s was I hooked two batteries in series ( like they have here ) to make 24 volt and connected a large 60+ amp battery charger to help give it a little pulse and help it to arc ( a little ) which it did and made it so I could make a couple fairly normal welds with 7014 rod. The next time I attempted this I needed to at least tack a bunch of tubing together , I had two real good batteries but only a little 4 amp charger. It didn’t work as good as before but I did manage to tack my tubing together with small spot welds, kind of ‘ scrubbing ‘ the spots because I had to keep it very short - no arc power. 6011 rods What I would like to see ( and I thought that was what they were going to do ) is for to see what it does with the generator running while welding? It should help it to arc and make it much more usable. Turning it off when welding didn’t make sense, unless striking an arc with the generator running burned up the brushes or something.

First, you used a welder to make a welder... and you used a stick welder to make a medeocer stick welder (both can be used to scratch start TIG but you're not using either that way). Second, you don't need the batteries if you wire it correctly, I built a similar alternator TIG powered by a 5hp electric motor and used the alternator field coil to self energize once it was spinning. In my case I just mounted the whole assembly to a 2x8" board and used a headlight dimmer wired to the field coil circuit as an amp output control. Finally, you're not getting nearly 200A out of that. At near 100% efficiency (which this will get nowhere near) you'll stall that 6.5hp motor, and that belt as installed will slip and smoke WELL before that. Forget that fact that I know of very few conventional case alternators that will put out 200A and you're only using 1/3 of the output of that alternator. I'm guessing that you're limited to about 70 or so amps the way you have that setup.

Why are you using car batteries and not deep cycle batteries? Car batteries are for momentary current only and require constant charging when in use. Deep cycle are for sustained current and only require charging when they are low. Don't believe me? Look up the difference in the plate thickness and spacing in the battery types. It also seems like a great way to blow your batteries up and throw sulfuric acid everywhere because you are effectively creating a direct short to weld and have nothing to limit the current. Batteries explode when exposed to direct shorts for too long because, you know, direct shorts create heat...a lot of heat

@@filboyt657 It's a fine machine! It needs to provide around 60 to 90 volts open circuit voltage to sustain a good welding arc. That's all. I run 7 batteries in series. I charge them via the alternator in my truck. I step the 12 volts up to 120 ac with a power inverter. I rectify this ac to dc and charge the batteries through a 1000 watt halogen light bulb that serves as a voltage dropping resistor to allow the inverter to not fault. Works really good. To adjust the arc (if it is too hot) i connect to the sixth or fifth battery, dropping the voltage and subsequently the amps.

@@goatsinker347 Sir that is well something I would love to see. I weld all the time on deep cycles @ 24 volts with flux wire in a spool gun. Using golf cart batts or deep cycle marine. My gun is called Ready Welder™ and it works well. I have a bucket truck and a sign co. , if I need to weld something I just throw 2 marine batts in the bucket and hook up the spool gun and take off. Often I stand on the batteries in the bucket. I can get a good 30 mins of arc time, rarely is that not enough. Soon I hope to TIG on batts in the bucket @ 30ft..
@goatsinker3474 жыл бұрын
@@alansims4344 Well, yeah, that's short circuit mig. In that process the wire touches the weld area and causes a momentary short circuit, the voltage can be lower since you're not sustaining an arc continuously. With stick welding the electrode is kept away a short distance from the weld area, and a higher voltage is helpful when you're having to rely on keeping the arc lit at moments when the arc gap becomes a bit longer than what 24 volts can sustain. I've found that 6013 rods do okay at an open circuit voltage as low as 48 volts, 6011 rods are happy at an ocv of 60 volts or so, 7018 rods barely work at 60 ocv volts, but come around at about 80 volts ocv, while 6010 rods are horrible until you get to around ocv of 90+ volts. I use two inverter welders hooked up in series to give me 126 ocv volts for welding 6010 rods. At that open circuit voltage the 6010 rods work extremely smoothly. Make note that i'm going by open circuit voltage, i'm in no way saying that-that's the voltage during welding. During welding what was the ocv voltage drops to maybe as low as 18 to 20 volts, fluctuating as arc length changes (due to being a result of a handheld electrode.)

I really thought this guy was going to do some marvelous thing with the engine and alternator but nooooooooo. He welds with the battery and then wasted everyone's time showing how to charge 2 12v batteries. You are better off putting them on the ac charger. Thumbs down man everyone knows about the battery welding.
