About how much money did you spend on materials for this build? Fantastic idea, and great job on the design and fabrication.

A steel vise is 1000% better than a cast iron. But what's with the little screwed-on patch at the back? That's where I'd weld a big fat 30mm thick "basher" plate.

No, a steel vice will slowly deform over time. Malleable Cast iron is the best material for toughness, which is why they make vices from it.

@@johncoops6897 I dunno where on earth you get such an idea. 1. In my 50 years of professional metalwork, I have seen dozens of cast iron vices of all sizes broken but never one steel one fail. Fact of life: People hit them directly and also what's clamped in them. How many bended angles have you made in the jaws? Lots. Where is the weakest point in that situation? At the thread nut. The bigger the vice, the harder guys feel entitled to hit them. 2. Malleable cast iron may indeed theoretically be a little more forgiving but 90% of vices in the world nowadays are cheaply made in China. So what are they made of? Brittle cheap iron. Malleable, double treated cast is in fact LESS tough after heating. Ever seen an oxy being used to heat up parts in a vice. All the time. There goes any advantage. 3. A well designed, properly welded steel vice is *not malleable* and is a beautuful thing. I made an 6" one at school. Still going flawlessly despite lots of abuse. Ffs, a vice is intended to *hold things*. Use a fkn anvil if you want to bash stuff. But, given that people inevitably hit them, what are ya gunna trust -- a brittle casting or plate steel. 4. The common failure is the thread to nut assembly. Duh. And have you noticed -- the STEEL threaded rod does not break, but the cast housing for it. You are talking through your arse.

@@thedolphin5428 - so, in your professional forging business, you use an anvil made from MIG welded bits of scrap mild steel? - you know, just like this vice is made from? ... BTW, of course cheap Chinese cast iron vices are not very strong. Some vices are forged rather than cast, and some are made from cast steel rather than cast irom. A well designed vice designed specifically for being beaten on will be better than a cheap Chinese cast grey steel vice that's just designed for gripping things. . I own many vices, including some fabricated ones that are a combination of cast and plate/tube steel. The good vices are much better than the cheap ones.

The only change I'd make is a longer hose to mount the gage on the wall. Easier to see and out of the way of the work being done.
