DIY French cleat storage system using Bamboo plywood! I made a modular wall mounted entertainment system using a French cleat detail. I used ¾” bamboo plywood to make this modular furniture system and made everything using less than a single 4-foot by 8-foot sheet.

I like the idea of doing something like this behind a bed, instead of a head board you could integrate some shelves, lights, picture frames, all adjustable, so cool!

Well, you know I would use this system for art studio components, such as wall easels, paint, pencil and brush storage. Oh, let’s not forget lights and artwork display. BOOM; out of the park with this design Mr. Uyeda. Love the cleated mirror.

For the cord management, you could totally just router a slot along the length, and then router a few slots vertically maybe every few feet. Could be a cool feature for those hanging light bulbs !

Man your creativity is off the charts. You make so much incredible stuff and you make it look so easy… it’s not. The first thing I would add is a phone/ipod dock right above the plug. That would be for charging and for playing music with the Bluetooth speaker. An Ipad/tablet dock too. Definitely a light above the turntable, especially for those non-automatic turntables. Hard to see where the needle needs to go after a few drinks… As you said a bookshelf would be great, magazine racks, maybe a hanger for a work bag, purse, cap, jacket, etc. When I come into a hotel room, I first need a place for my work messenger bag/computer backpack. It usually ends up being the desk chair or couch. I then look for a place to charge my phone and computer. I also need a place for my glasses, water bottle, and hotel key. I wear baseball caps, so that usually ends up on the desk. A catch-all tray for rental car keys, wallet and anything else that ends up in my pockets. I then turn on my music and unpack. Would probably run the cables in a channel along the back wall hanger. Maybe place two or three plugs recessed into the back wall hanger, so that the system is powered. Only one would plug into the outlet for power. There’s never enough plugs accessible in hotel rooms… I’m going to borrow your vinyl storage idea… Thanks!

I love French cleats! I don't know why, but I just love them! If I had my own house, I would totally do this kind of thing, but just with bookshelves. Like, start at the left top corner of a wall and slowly go diagonally down it with bookshelves. Maybe put a papasan chair under the shelves that are higher up. I wonder if the cleats would hold up with all the weight of the books though, even if they were screwed into studs. This was great! Love this channel.

THANK YOU so much for making something out of plyboo! I've been staring at that website for about 10 years wondering about projects I could do with this product. It's expensive stuff to buy and to ship to Tennessee, so I didn't want to get it and just let it sit in my garage, or worse try something and mess it up. I love this modular concept you came up with. The sofa looks good, too! I'll be watching that one in about 5 seconds.

And I was thinking he UK was an outlier on prices! Still an interesting project though I wouldn't use bamboo, you could use virtually any solid wood for the rail even walnut or cocbolo would probably work out cheaper and maple or cherry certainly would. Birch ply would be less than a 1/3 the cost of bamboo. Love the idea of getting furniture off the floor.

Design ideas and cord management.... What about a single square bar, cleat hung, with cantilevered shelves attached to the center bar. The center bar can be 3 sides with space in middle to allow a cord to pass through, up a wall, connecting to a wall outlet, but hiding both outlet and cord? Just a thought. Not sure if I was clear enough.

This is gorgeous! I'm interested to see how the pieces would work in a hotel setting, maybe some much larger items sitting on two rows of french cleats so patrons are less likely to knock them around? And/or like a dowel system running through vertically (in brass because it's a hotel so there must be brass hehe) that can lock pieces in place? Anyway, I want this in my home. Thanks for the vid!

Hang a tv on it! For chord management, you could cut a channel in the back of the mount parts that run vertical and even some in the horizontal parts and run cables through them. Not sure where they’d end up at the end but it’s an idea to get you thinking.

For cable management, I’ve seen suggestions for routing a channel. Another method to get a similar result could be to use off it ply to double up the thickness of the wall rail, but only along the bottom and top, so there is a cavity in the middle for cords to go. Gaps could be left strategically to allow cables to come out from or into the rail where necessary. This could possibly make it easier to actually move the cables within, as opposed to routing. Anyway just a thought. Love the project, it came out super clean! Perfect project to show off that awesome bamboo ply.

Super project! again :) YOU have a first with the cut outs on the side panels to attach to the wall. That eliminates the stand off of the bar shelves and can be used in many different ways. Like my next wall project that needs a clean modern look of furniture not garage shelves. Thank you for the idea!

With regards to cable management.. the bottom of the french cleat on the wall, if you trim out a small section closest to the wall, this woudl give room for the cable to be hidden. Then use extra french cleat units that would "clamp" the cable to the bottom. An inverted T. This way you can adjust the location or replacement of the cable if damaged.

Having two inlaid pieces of bare 14 AWG copper wire running the length of the system at 12 or 5 VDC might be a really cool way to handle power. You'd then have to use some sort of spring clips to get power into the individual modules, but I think it would be worth it. Think of it like a low voltage track-light system.
