I am an apprentice cabinetmaker in Australia and I'd been searching around trying to find someone who scribes 'properly'. I always had the idea that there would be a solution like this for high quality projects, and now I've got an idea to bring back to the boss! seriously awesome fit with the benchtops and filler face frames.
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! And I'm so glad this was helpful. I've used that scribe technique in the past cutting 2 parallel slots the full length of my scribe strip and also a groove up my cabinet side on the table saw. Then I just used regular wood biscuits and the same scribing process.
@xesonik28572 жыл бұрын
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking most of our work is whiteboard melamine in aus as its much more stable than ply with the humidity (and cheaper), with painted MDF faces or veneered mdf/chipboard. The only hard part is going to be arguing if it is worth the trouble for cheaper/low-profit projects. These same style of fillers we usually pocket hole or screw right through from the back and/or glue. My other plan was to start marking cabinet positions on the unseen top of the kicks and move them over accurately the distance of my scribe block/tool, to avoid reassembly but use the same strategy. Unfortunately this means taking the cabinets in and out so I'd much prefer if we got on board with lamello'ing the faces!

How much would something like this cost? I'm thinking about having this installed in my apartment, I would only need 50% but not sure where to begin. The cost is going to be a huge factor so was curious. Thanks!
@flat---line Жыл бұрын
@Jonat2Go Custom stuff like this is going to run a pretty hefty price tag. I don't remember the dimensions of the one in the video, but by looking at it, I would estimate $8k-$12k. Now if you want one half the size, I wouldn't just assume half the cost. That isn't really how these work. For half the size, I would estimate $6k-$9k. This is just for me, and a different builder could be drastically different.
@Jonat2Go Жыл бұрын
@@flat---line The cubby in question is about 40 in, so it's probably even less than 50% of that since that looks massive. However, thanks for the inside, gives me an idea of how affordable it is. I have a great spot but not sure I have the wallet power for it.

@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking Sometimes knowing what "NOT" to do, is just as valuable as what To Do... Didn't get a great look at it, but, didn't look like enough space for any type of Bearing slide mechanism. Maybe some HDPE, which even with fresh oil or wax, unless it is a bit loose/slack, won't move easily. I saw the design. Looked like good intentions. Rec Tubing, Xbar design, 4 legs, so, probably free standing and removable. Was curious about his Extruded Alum Fence. That Has to work, or, not worth using.. Anyway.. Consider it.. Maybe a "If I were going to do it again video. I'm not in my shop yet, but, I already know, I don't want to go the Tracksaw and Parallel Guide Route. Awesome video btw.. The use of the Lemelo to dry fit, break down and assemble onsite is a definite plus if you are working by the job and not by the hour. A little pricey to add, but, I can see, absolutely saved time and touch up.. Thanks for producing the Video.. I watched it twice.. Once, just sat back and enjoyed it.. Second time, I captured 16 screen grabs of the table. Most n the same 2-3 positions though. BTW.. It would not be hard to retrofit that slide with bearings, but, it would require a modification to the Slide itself, where it attaches to the Rec Tube, and, the legs would have to be shortened a bit more than the Radius of the bearing.. Thanks again for the video, and again for the reply.. Take care Friend!

As a cabinet maker / installer in the uk , that was pretty impressive ! .... You guys certainly go about it the hard way using solid wood / board . We use Melamine 18mm board for the carcasses and vinyl wrapped doors which all match , all the spraying of components seems a big faff . Are there no companies that manufacture vinyl wrap doors in th U.S ?

Thanks mate! Over here, melamine cabinets and thermofoil doors are considering low quality and budget friendly. It's what you would get at your local home center when you buy a full sink vanity for $100.
