My sister gets really bad, chronic ingrown toenails. She discovered that getting a fake toenail (like the cute acrylic ones you would get after a pedicure) fixed her problem. Apparently the acrylic helps keep the nail from growing down into the toe. Might be worth looking into!

Hi Dixie, I’m a manicurist and I specialize in therapeutic pedicures. Part of the problem, and I can see it based on you showing your big toes, is how you cut your toenail. It needs to grow out enough so you can cut it straight across and not a rounded, half moon shape. That causes the side of your nail to be cut lower and begausw you walk you out pressure on the bottom of your toe so your toe flattens out and it shapes your toe into a square shape. Square flesh with a rounded toenail, that wants to grow in a square, will cause the corner edges to grow into your toe and that causes an ingrown. Another way to look at it is sometimes you cut your toenail and round it off but it leaves a point at the end of the toe. So, you have a 90 degree angle but the cut you made or the cut you tried to make and it ripped along the grain causes a curve. That straight line is still growing up but now it’s growing a point into your toe side wall. It’s so hard to describe with words and not a picture. If you see this (or really anyone who wants to know more) please DM me on Instagram at ChristinaMatzenNails or I’m on FB with this name and I can show you better with photos not just words. It’s not just vanity that causes people to get pedicures. We help a lot of people with the health of their feet. It’s like my Grandma used to say - Take care of your feet and your teeth. You only get one set.

I struggled with ingrown toenails on my big toes on both feet growing up playing soccer. I eventually had a doctor suggest getting the roots "burned" out. Was the best thing I ever had done. They numb your toe the same way as when they cut them out and they use some kind of acid treatment to destroy the roots at the edge of the nail. Is a pretty similar recovery to having them cut out, little bit of a slight burning sensation as it heals but they never grow back and it is wonderful. Something to consider.

Yep, the V worked for me too. I also discovered they make toenail clippers with the curve going the opposite way and ever since I started using those, I stopped getting ingrown toenails. Just gotta make sure you cute them straight across too and the V or inverted curve clippers ensure that. Then you can cut the short and they are less likely to get ingrown. When we stopped to fish they kept bitting our bobbers and coming up to our boat where we would have to tap them in the head with a paddle to get to them to go away. We were in a 12 ft Jon Boat. Low to the water. I later found out we were in a canal that the tour boats frequented and they would feed the gators for the tourist

Some folk are just prone to ingrown toenails sometimes. Between the ages of 14 and 20 I had had my big toenail removed 5 times on each foot, the left being permanent. A few years after I had my right big toenail permanently removed as well. When trail talk comes to blisters at a camp I usually surprise folk by saying I never get blisters anywhere on my feet, I think a big part of that is not having big toenails. Well, for the toe part at least, the rest of my feet I think I am just lucky. I can never recall the old fella that just wanders the US, he apparently just got fed up with life and started walking, trails, roads it didn't matter. He had all his toenails removed to avoid blisters and ingrown nails as they hindered his progress and forced to stop to recover. I wish I could recall his name.

Hey Wanderlust, I have a solution to your ingrown toenail problem that worked for us in the military especially the mountains in Afghanistan. You need to cut a small "V" notch in the center of the tip of your toe nail and then shave or file the thickness of your toenail Just along a center line from the notch to the base of your toenail maybe a 1/4 inch wide area. Don't get it too thin but this was the advice by our military in- country doctor and it worked. Hope this helps your situation.

Loved the intro! Have you tried a glue on toenail brace to help with the ingrown toenail problem?

I’ve never heard of this!

Search for toenail brace on Amazon. It may help you if the ingrown nail is due to a curve in the nail.

Obviously too late for now, but I had a ingrown toe nail in my early twenties and learned a "trick" from my local medical doctor. He didn't remove the nail but "lifted" the ingrown part slightly. Then managed to get a small piece of Leukoplast under the corner of the nail. Fairly painful, particularly if the toe already is sore and/or has a infection. Of course it cant replace the antibiotics if that's necessary. After one more time to the doctor I managed to change to new Leukoplast myself. Don't remember how many times I had to do it, but it was just a couple and one piece of Leukoplast can stay on for many days. Never had to have the nail removed and it didn't fall off. I had to be careful with the toe for years later and I always use shoes that are fairly roomy around the toes, but so far no more ingrown nails. I also found that Leukoplast was extremely useful and it replaced band aids, Compeed and Duct tape on all my later hikes. Actually it was my complete first aid kit until I discovered Vitamin I. I always get the 5cm wide one as it's easier to use against blisters (than the 2.5 cm one) and it has to be the stretchy fabric type. Here's a link to Amazon for anyone who wish to try it. www.amazon.com/BSN-Medical-Leukoplast-Tape-pcs/dp/B07D15TFYP

Years ago I spent a long weekend fishing with a leaky hip boot. For 4 days my left foot stewed in river water in which carcasses of dead salmon had steeped. I got an infection that made my foot swell so bad I couldn't put it in a shoe, had to go around with a moccasin on one foot and a shoe on the other. I thought of that when I watched you slogging through miles of swamp. I doctored myself by soaking it in salt water. Tough to do when on the Trail. Hope you're better now.

Oh my goodness... when those 2 gators jumped/slid into the water, I gasped so loudly!! Lol!! I was worried for your safety Dixie! 🤣 You are the coolest!!

Dixie is too complacent I believe. Gators have been know to move very quick. Fla native.

Truly admire your toughness and enjoy your content. If I'm not mistaken, the track that you encountered belonged to a "Florida Panther", and a fair sized one at that. Thanks Dixie!

Yes, I jumped, when the two gators jumped into the water! Hahahahaha!!! I'm so sorry that you had big toe issues again, Dixie! Hopefully, this procedure will take care of you for good! Stay safe, and happy!

Love the gators, scary and fascinating at the same time! I had both big toenails permanently removed after years and years of problems. So wish I had done it sooner.

The stories of folks like Mostly Harmless are why I always wear an ID bracelet. Mine is from RoadID and was a gift from a college friend who is a paramedic and retired sheriff's deputy. It carries my name, age, medicine allergy, and phone numbers for my bf and parents. They're around $30 and are, in my mind, an essential piece of gear. I've always found it odd that identification wasn't part of the 10 essentials.

Mostly Harmless did not Want to be identified. He was probably happier not being identified. I read up on his life, etc. It is very interesting and sad-making.

2.34 "Dinosaurs are real." I completely agree with you. I'm not as brave as you, I was scared seeing alligators from the comfort (and speed) of a boat.

I love watching you go on trails and experiencing it in a small way through you. You see such amazing things and you always seem to make it through quite dangerous situations relatively safely. In the meantime, in January, I went on a walk in woods I know in -7 temperatures and I fell through ice, I was in the ice water up to my nose and it was so painful, like thousands of razor blades cutting me. Tried to get out but the ice kept breaking. Barely made it out, to then see myself being surrounded by ice and not wanting to fall through again. I thought I was gonna die right there. Somehow, I managed to make it all the way out of the woods on my own, but it was very scary. I think I might have to stick to watching you, I'm so accident prone. 😉

I have had the same issue with ingrown toenails in the past. I had 13 ingrown toenails over the course of 5 years. Finally, I saw a different podiatrist who used some chemical on both sides of my toenail to prevent them from growing out horizontally.

Dixie....always the best hiker videos and partly the reason that I hike so much today.

5:46 glad you didnt touch it. It's poisonous would feel like a bee sting. Alligators seem to like canals. 6:08 no claw marks looks like a cougar track I can't tell if there are two lobes at the top. Could be the endangered Florida panther that lives in the fresh water swamps. Pawesome find. You are unlikely to see them they are mostly nocturnal. 9:48 cool gator tracks. Lots of cool wildlife.

Is there a reason your toenails become ingrown ? Think this is the second time you've mentioned one (many years passed since the last one) ? Just wondering because I've only had one but think some people are susceptible to them and wondering why ? I've heard that cutting toenails too short, something I do all the time, can cause it but see that yours isn't really that short. I know you cut them before you start a hike (many recommend this) and I don't know how long you've been on this current trail but they don't look like they were too short at the start. It's only been a couple of weeks right ? Maybe the constant bumping on the front of the shoe but that wouldn't be as much of a problem on a flat trail like the FT ? (Sorry f you've answered any of these questions in this video - I haven't watched it yet). New idea for another video: Total foot care. Prevention of blisters, ingrown toenails, PF prevention, stretching exercises, care of injuries (with the usual disclaimers), achy feet, etc. I think you made videos about some of these things but one with all the info you can gather from other hikers as well would be good.

Thats a bobcat print. Thanks for the hand reference. Blahaha, you startled the gators! So funny. I did it once with mama and her four babies. Ari, such a gentleman. So glad he was able to help. The deer were so small but I am glad you saw them too. I felt as though they were the universe saying here, something special.

I love the fact that you take video of the wee critters as well as the big ones. You might want to know that it is important to wet your hands before touching amphibians and toads. Dry skin tears away their slime layer which can sometimes cause a slow and painful death. I am pretty sure you like the critters so wanted to let you know. Excellent video as always!

I love the videos! I'm with you Dixie! much more interested in the wildlife than the views! and that print was definitely a big cat. very cool to see, more rare on the east coast

Looks like either a bobcat or a lynx track. While they are two separate animals they are very similar and the tracks are hard to tell apart. It would really depend on the size.

Let's call 'em what they are: short legged dinosaurs! But they are beautiful to behold.
@peterjones41803 жыл бұрын
Well they are Archosaurs, but rather ancient relatives of dinosaurs, still the closest living relatives of Crocodilians are...............Ducks, they are the most primitive living avian therapods.
