A homeowner shot at three masked gunmen during an attempted home invasion. The drama erupted at a home in Washington. First, the suspects tried to fool the homeowner into opening the door by posing as Seattle police. They then pushed against the door and tried to kick it in. However, they were not prepared for what happened when the door gave way. The homeowner started to shoot at the would-be intruders. All three suspects took off running.

As long as they remain outside the use of lethal force in defense of oneself, or others in the house with you, would likely be deemed unlawful. However, if they were to start shooting through the walls the use of lethal force in defense of oneself or other innocent persons may potentially be seen as justifiable. However, if shooting through the walls resulted in the death of an innocent person who was outside, and not posing a threat to those in the house, would likely result in criminal charges. I think he phrased the answer poorly. Cops say that we shouldn't engage in firefights all willy nilly with no regard for 'the backstop' aka where the bullets will hit in the neighborhood. If you're in the country, you're fine. If you're in the suburbs, an FMJ round from any handgun or rifle may hit a neighbor's house. Personally I think the person should NOT be expected to be 'checking his backstop' if in fear for his life. And THAT'S definitely a life threatening experience.

Could be worse. I live in the UK and over here, not only do we sadly not have the right to own firearms for self defence, but something that is very common here, is that if a robber breaks into your house and threatens you or your family, YOU'RE the one who gets arrested for assault if you hit them with something else like a baseball bat etc .. basically over here they call it "taking the law into your own hands"... it really really really sucks. At least you guys have some rights to home defence even if you do have to justify it. In the UK you basically can't do anything.

Saw a post on reddit recently where some guy was touting his respect for his family by unloading and locking his firearm once he gets home because that is their wishes. He got shredded in the comments obviously. But this is why. You need your weapon sometimes more at home than you do out in public.
