67 year old widow , water in basement from storm Elsa today, haven't used the shop vac in some time to remove water in basement. Thanks for the excellent video refresher course. Thumbs up. Many thanks !!! Actually had to run to Home Depot as the pump I had didn't work. The seasoned staff at home depot were clueless , useless as to where I would find the wet/vac water pump accessory. Needless to say one is best to use their own devices. I found it and attached it, good to go. Thanks again

They make a foam filter specifically for water pickup. I'd recommend using that just in case you pick up any other junk along with water. In my experience at least, you're never sucking up perfectly clean water and a good amount of gunk gets stuck on the foam filter that may have otherwise blown through the vac motor which isn't good for it. Wet pickup foam filter, very durable/washable/reusable: www.amazon.com/Ridgid-Genuine-Replacement-Application-Vacuums/dp/B00LBHOI2C

You can actually run the pump and vac at the same time which I did when my basement took on water - about as much as shown in your video. It would not work for a large amount of water or a body of water like a bathtub then as you indicate it would have to be a 2 step process.

I'm looking for a way to reuse (pump) water from an upstairs oversized bathtub through a window, down to my lawn and flower beds. Might this be a reasonable solution? Is there a better way?
@maycatyuiop5 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea! Legally you probably can't but some jurisdictions Allow it. All you would need to do is plumb the drain to your garden and possibly add a in line pump to it. Shouldn't be too hard although it may be difficult to access the drain
@NeverSuspects5 жыл бұрын
You could probably just use a hose and siphon most of the water out. With one end of the how kept lower then the other and the other end submerged in the tub pull the water from the lower drain to end by eaither using something to suck it and start the flow or just well.. sucking on it.. and once it starts to flow it will go as long as one end stays completely submerged and the other end is lower then the submerged side. gravity will do the rest.. Just like how people used to siphon gas out of older cars tanks.

@HomeownerRepair3 жыл бұрын
no because the pump pumps the water out too fast.
@fungoorstitch5 жыл бұрын
I could be mistaken, but I don't think the accessory pump is necessary. Should work if you just install a shutoff valve in a hole in the bottom of the shop vac basin and close it before starting the vac. Once incoming water fills the basin and submerges the valve, you should be able to simply open the value and allow the water to evacuate through a hose attached to the valve. The lid of the vac must always stay on during operation to maintain vacuum. The only problem you might encounter with this is if the basin fills faster than it empties, triggering the motor cut-off switch. To combat the issue, ensure your new valve and hose are larger than the intake. Also, ensure you use a heavy duty power cord, as a cheap one absolutely WILL burn up from really prolonged use in this manner. Either that or the vac will keep tripping its breaker. Bear in mind too that the life span of the shop vac will definitely be reduced.
@greenbackfunding4182 жыл бұрын
Yes, but location is the key factor here, in a basement you are lower than ground level so to use only gravity you would have to be higher than ground level or where ever you plan on dumping the water. If you are above ground level just open the valve at the bottom and let it flow, or connect a hose to run it down to street or just wheel it down there and open the valve. Basically location being lower than ground level in a basement is the only reason for a pump.

I tried this, and the pump pumps the water out faster than the vacuum takes it in. You don't want to run the pump dry, it will burn out.
@wholelottalight5 жыл бұрын
I suspect you could run it continuously if you can adjust the flow rates so they are about the same. It would take some fiddling to do though.
@practicalguy9735 жыл бұрын
@@wholelottalight Those pumps are water cooled just like all sump pumps. Restricting water flow may lead to reduced life.

Can you vac & pump at same time? Does it take dirt through pump? Thanks
@HomeownerRepair5 жыл бұрын
No because it drains the water too fast. I tried it.

Do I absolutely need a pump? I have a leak and it went to the room next door and soaked up a big portion of the carpet so i won’t be vacuuming up a lot of water.
@HomeownerRepair2 жыл бұрын
No the pump just makes it easier to empty, but it is not required to vacuum up water.

So on the opposite side of where you plug the hose in is another hole and when I was sucking water out it was blowing out the hole on the other side of the lid. Am I supposed to plug it with something?
@HomeownerRepair4 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, water should not come out of the discharge hole. The ball inside (underneath the top) should move freely to block water from coming out of the discharge hole. Hope this helps you out.

Homeowner Repair ok thank you! Sure didn’t seem right to me. Wonder if maybe it was just to full? Idk but I’ll pay more attention next time.

You don't need the pump unless you're sending the water up vertically (e.g., out of a basement) and you don't have a sump pump. If you have a sump pump, roll the vac to the sump pump, remove the cap at the bottom side of the vac and quickly insert a sock over the hole if you want (as a dirt filter). Gravity works great! No extra water pump needed. ~ Isa, Tiny House Northeast

Cool video. Also Utility pumps will pump out with just 1/8 inch of water remaining in basement to save time and then you can finish up with shop vac.

Is there any concern about letting the electrical cord sit in water while vacuuming? Thanks!
@HomeownerRepair6 жыл бұрын
You should keep it out of water whenever possible
@YR7A6 жыл бұрын
my best advice is to just use common sense, inspect the cord if there are punctures in the outer surface of the cord then keep it out of the water if not then just dont let the connection betweeen the extention cord (if you are using one) or the wall touch the water. does that help any?
