At 9:15 While I am sure some pros do this routinely it's a major safety issue for the beginner Miter saw DIYer. Not only is the safety shield retracted in an awkward manner with your forearm, but the piece you're cutting is impinged against the fence and your hand feeding the piece. Your hand and body are really exposed if there's any kickback or someone bumps you from behind, (Which you mention a few seconds later!) If you need to cut a piece longer than the span for your miter saw, you should be using a table saw, jig saw, or multitool to make the cut. Overall I enjoy seeing your practical approaches to what seem like complex fixes, but this one crosses the safety line for me in a "Beginner" video. Use the right tool for the job folks!

Thank you! Very nice instructional video. I have owned my fixed Dewalt miter saw for many years but only occasionally use it for home projects. Today, I encountered a different cut and needed a refresher to configure the double compound feature. I learned so much watching your video. Any new saw owner or occasional user should watch this video. I learned so much more than I came for. I also had been considering purchasing a sliding compound saw but hadn’t since the need overall was very low. I believe you have showed me how to use my current saw better for all my needs without the need for a sliding model. I’m definitely more proficient and knowledgeable concerning my miter saw today. I have the big 12" slider. Its so much heavier than it looks, so if weight is an issue, get the 10 inch if you are a home owner. I own both. The blades are cheaper and they cut straighter, perfect for the stuff he was cutting. Dewalt makes good saws. They even make a smaller one, its around 7 inch. These saws are all over craigslist, offerup, etc. People use them for a project and sell them for 50% off retail and even less. Dont buy without trying it. Ive been doing remodels, fences, decks, adu's 10 years. I only do 4 things DeWalt, orbital sanders, miter saws, air nailers are pretty good, and jobsite tablesaws. If youre getting into trim, youre gonna need a finish nailer, a brad gun, and a pinner. And a compressor. Dowm the rabbit hole you go. Haha! Lastly, he is 100% right about the stand. If you domt have the stand, you might as well skip the saw, and get a plastic yellow miter box and a rusty old wooden handled saw. Get a good blade and dont cut nails !!!!

Oh man, I really wish this video was out a few days ago - yesterday I just replaced some damaged baseboard & added chair rail in my dining room, and the “cut it vertically” tip alone would have saved me a bunch of time setting and resetting the saw angle. Completely changes my way of looking at using the saw.

Thank You Jeff! I say that mainly for @02:48, regarding the finishing of a cut. Ask a few tradespeople, and you will quickly get a discussion/ argument going on whether or not to ‘lift up’ after the cut! And I’m putting that nicely. If, and I say IF, you are cutting big lumber or wide boards, you can probably plunge cut and come back up, but, BUT for anything else, just take a few extra seconds to let the blade brake do its job, and save yourself, a bystander/worker nearby, and your material! Make the cut just like Jeff did here people! I’ve seen small pieces of wood come off and stick or go through fresh drywall on the job! This can be serious. I’ve had the saw catch and pinch or twist my fingers by the long piece remaining, when I lifted the head with the blade spinning, and catching the cut off, and the piece on the saw. Lifting material to extend the capacity, yeah, most all of us have done it. I don’t recommend it, but if you must, spend some time with your saw beforehand, get to know it. I’ve operated miter saws for over 20 years. Only saying that as a matter of reference to which I speak. Certainly not as bragging rights. Please think, and be safe! Thanks for the video Jeff! 👍👍👍✌🏻😀

This is good advice and tips for the younger guys. I was just texting a younger family member and gave him same advice. I actually had that same saw 15 years ago with the stand and took it back for a single bevel compound miter Rigid. Still use it a ton and it fits very nice on my tool shelf. I prefer temporary work benches with an old piece of plywood and horses and some Harbor Freight rollers. The saws light enough to grab and switch it out with a 10” job site table saw. I like to lag the table saw to the plywood even if it’s only a few cuts. One thing most people don’t know is the height of the miter saw is 3 1/2”. So you can keep two pieces of 4xs handy and a piece of pine board to fasten as a jig if you don’t like trying to hold crown still while cutting. I have a piece of pvc 3/4 material that I use for that so it doesn’t warp and stuff. A 12” board is big enough where you can make your jig cuts and it will still stay together with that saw.

"You don't need sliding saw. If your doing flooring, just pick up piece." I have 10 inch sliding Kobalt and works great. Less bulky and expensive than 12 inch, but cuts everything I ever needed. I even rip short pieces from time to time.

A little trick I learned, put a piece of painters tape on the throat plate (bottom of the saw where the bottom of the blade goes). It gives you a zero clearance for smaller cuts and you can reference off it so you know exactly where the blade will cut.

Excellent Yard Dawg! Not only will it help with the cut, it IS a safety measure, as small pieces won’t fall into the throat area, and bind up or get caught with the blade! Another reason for leaving the head down, as the blade comes to a stop! Peace!

One of the things that they teach us at Habitat is to NEVER reach across the blade (perhaps to catch a piece of dropping wood). Never have your arms crossed. Instead, use one hand to hold the wood, and the other on the handle, and don't cross your arms. (They are also quite strict on hearing, and eye protection, and not wearing gloves while operating the saw.)

Perfect timing! Just put down my underlayment. Surprised the underlay was 0.60/sqft as I was expecting cheaper from King of Floors and having watched the video mentioning that the quality stuff can be 20 cents, but maybe it's because BC's flooding means everyone is redoing their floors. While my mitre also isn't long enough for my laminate floors, I'm definitely not trying that trick just yet. Scares me. Either way, thanks Jeff!

Also, once sponsored you won't always get their stuff for free, but you'll get it "at cost", so still cheaper than store prices. That was the case for music instruments when I worked for a music gear supplier. No idea if that applies to DeWalt or other tool brands though.

I would like to add a very important reminder: square the fence to the blade AND the fence to the table AND the blade to the table, not just the blade to the table!!! Don't forget that most blades have teeth that are wider than the actual body of the blade when setting up your square. WEAR safety glasses AND connect a freaking shop vac to it: you'll thank yourself later when you won't have to pick up a truckload of wood dust everywhere, especially on a mighty 12 inch like this one. The blade on a miter saw spins from front to back(otherwise dust collection would be impossible and...DANGER) as seen clearly in this video it is counter clockwise from the right perspective (place yourself on the left, the rotation is clockwise). If you somehow invert the blade...be prepared for epic danger and the wood being thrown or ripped from you. Also, take into account the kerf when measuring and cutting, sometimes it's better to measure twice and cut twice rather than measuring twice and cutting once, only to find out you cut exactly on the line like a genius...great, now you're off by 1/16th or even 1/8th depending on the blade.

As a 50 year long woodworker and carpenter number one rule before anything is safety glasses I've seen eyeballs get pieces of wood in them all the time never me because of safety glasses. First thing you learn at wood shop in high school.
