Jeff, For me, the fact that you do not edit / cut your videos when you encounter a problem ( like with the height of the transition strip) gives a lot of credibility to what you do. In reality, things are not always perfect the first time. Thanks & have a great weekend 👍

I was in on the laminate floor craze when it first started in the mid 90's. PERGO was the original laminate floating floor system sold in the U.S. I was an endorsed PERGO Installer for Home Depots. I installed thousands of these floors. Back then we didn't have snap together flooring. It was all glue together which required special ratchet straps that went from the start coarse of flooring to the course you were gluing together. It made the installation process more timely but I believe it was a much better product. No seams over time and the melamine and aluminum oxide laminate finish was pretty darn tough. As far as installing transitions , I cut the track and transition to size. Snap the track onto the transition and simply adhere both to the sub floor with Power Grab construction adhesive. Works like a charm and your not fighting trying to squeeze the transition tongue into the flimsy mounting track screwed to the floor. However you can certainly do it as you showed. I'ts just a pain in the ass. Personally I think doing it my way makes a much more secure transition as well. Never had a call back on a transition failing.

When trimming back the flooring at the transition, I find that using my small circular saw to cut as much as possible and then using my oscillating tool on the ends where the circ saw doesn't reach saves a lot of time. Great video, very well explained 👍

Thanks for all your work that has made my handyman life so much better!!!! After 50...100+ hours of watching your very efficient ideas and processes I was finally surprised wo think of a tip for you? Trimming that luxury vinyl plank or laminate at the improperly installed door threshold area you might want to drop the recip saw and use your grinder ... "cuts" your time from 30 min and using a few expensive blade to 2 min.... with a 50 cent steel or masonry disc on the grinder... super easy (especially without the safety shield)!!!! You are blessing... well if there's a God and if there is not then you are at least extremely helpful!!!!! cheers, brian

My issue too for transition from tile to laminate. And the tile guy did exactly what you said, they finished off the tile too soon (who knew??). My daughter and I installed a floating laminate floor and the tile is higher and I can’t do just the T transition. More like the concrete to laminate only in reverse heights. Using the 4 in 1 transition set from Pergo. Had to special order, but worth it for the color match and options at hand for all the door ways. The nice part is they gave us an extra rubber piece to make it all match for the extra height for the underpayment. Sweet! One door is tIle to laminate and the other door is laminate to carpet. I love your videos. You should see this floor. Looks great and I am proud to say that I am a weekend warrior!

Thank you so very much! I am doing my very first laminate floor installation in a small bathroom. I have the water proof flooring and all my supplies. I did however forget the transition strip. I will be ordering it from my "Big Box" supplier. I will be laying about 28 sq. feet on flooring. Along with this renovation I am having a new shower pan & surround installed. I am installing a new pedestal sink, glass panel entry door, and new baseboards & mouldings around the window and door. I am excited about this project and I will return to these videos for help and guidance along my way in this adventure!

A carbide scoring tool goes along way to eliminate the number of blades and getting a straight line in cutting off the the flooring. Use a straight edge to run the knife along, to cut through the tough top layer of the flooring then cut with the oscillating tool. The tool is normally used for cutting laminate, and in this case will eliminate the chatter from trying to cut through laminate with a very high quality finish, by scoring a line through the clear finish and top layer. Great video !!

plates for the transitions (we just call them trims in AU) should always be fitted WITHOUT the underlay under them to prevent rocking and in the case of the cheap and crappy plastic tracks cracking over time (get alumnium tracks when you have the option, they're out there).

I know you mean well but calling those not in your trade ‘weekend warriors’ is a little harsh. Many people will be able to do this without major issues and do lots of jobs about their home. Main reason I’d say is some trades people charge too much and some don’t do even an adequate job.

I enjoyed your video, it showed me exactly what I was thinking that the installers did it wrong to begin with. We had laminate flooring put in our hallway and living room and the installers made a mess of the doorways as well as floor molding. I could have done all of this myself had I had time, but I had a feeling that they were suppose to not leave so much of it in the doorway rather they should have cut back in order to put the transitions and reducers in like your video shows. See, the hallway and Livingroom had to have plywood to meet with the kitchen flooring that was already down 4 years ago and our hallway and Livingroom had thick carpeting that made it blend in with the flooring but now that the Livingroom carpet and hall was removed we need plywood but our other 4 rooms have rugs but much thinner and we're keeping them and now we have an unsightly situation because these installers went ahead and put the transitions/reducers in that extended beyond the doorway and looks like crap and I have pictures of everything that was done wrong. My question is this, now that they cut back some of our carpeting in the 4 other rooms to fit the transitions and beyond the door ways that need to be cut back we'll have a space that will show missing carpeting when someone comes back to correct what was done wrong. How can this be done in order to finish off the doorways correctly and still cover the bare missing rug? Yes, we were told that when it's done the correct way we will have this unsightly mess to look at. I was thinking that these came in different sizes in width but was told no. How do you think this should be done in order to make this all work? Your reply to this matter would be greatly appreciated, we've been sitting on this for over a month waiting for the company to send someone out to fix what was done wrong to begin with. It's a game these contractors play, pay and wait and hope the consumer doesn't notice or care how it looks......

Jeff, how about using a circular saw to cut as much as possible in the doorway, then use the reciprocating tool to finish at the sides? This saves a lot of time and extra blades.

Thank you for the excellent info. It's great to see what to do if one makes mistake. Please, if possible, let the cameraman know that when you do something with your hands the camera should follow. Sometimes the camera was in your face instead of your hands. Hopefully, we didn't miss any part of the process.

Jeff, I'm replacing carpet that transitions to hardwood under a doorway with laminate. Currently the hardwood comes all the way under the door to meet the carpet. To install the transition strip from new laminate to hardwood, Like the problem you faced in this video, I guess I will need to cut back the hardwood to accommodate the transition strip under the door? (Your videos have been a great help to me btw.)

You could use a piece of solder and wood screws in drilled holes in the concrete

This is so helpful! For the transition strip, what if your laminates are at a different height than your connecting flooring? Tile for example.
