My Dad installed a drop ceiling in our basement years ago when we were kids. When we became adults, he said they use to hide Christmas presents up there so we couldn't sneak a peek at the presents. - Loved this video!

I did this in my kitchen back when the ceiling leaked and the plaster came down. I didn't have the skill or desire to do drywall on this old house, so I just up the drop ceiling. What an amazing help it was too. I was able to rewire the entire kitchen very easily! It's held up very well and still looks as good as the day I put it up. Fast forward 16 years and I'm buying a new home. The basement is not finished. What a great reminder that I can easily install this ceiling down there and hide all the plumbing and wiring without losing access to it.

I almost always go drop ceiling in a basement as long as height allows it. It's so much easier to replace a ceiling tile or 2 when you eventually have a leak also if you need to ever access what's up in the joists just pop a tile or 2 and move it out of the way and move it back when you finished

great option to manage sound proofing options as you move forward.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY On your previous video where you did soundproofing, you mentioned using SONOPAN with a suspended ceiling. Of course, by doing that, you lose access to whatever is in the ceiling but you don't have to worry about doing the mud. However I see one issue with doing that. Lets say you strap your ceiling with 1/3 every 16 inches to attach the SONOPAN boards, that means you get a gap of 1 3/8" between the SONOPAN and the joist trust and those pins used to fish the wires seem like 1 1/2"... What would you recommend in that case?.. Also.. How confident are you that a ceiling with INSULATION (R12) + SONOPAN + Suspended ceiling would provide good soundproofing, especially that you have to place those pins directly on the joist trust or the 1x3 woof straps which would transmit sound over.... Last but not least, I imagine a suspended ceiling is not a good choice for a bathroom with a shower in a basement right? Sorry, those are 3 questions there...

@@ptessier73 soundproofing is just a matter of terminating vibration. All the fibers in Insulation make it a great way to damper the vibration of sound moving through a wall. Think of it like a metal plenum disbursing heat so that something doesn't get hot enough to ignite. If you can temper the vibration you can temper the sound

interesting math at 14:39. If you want the first recessed tile to sit and be aligned with the wall hanger's edge. you should cut 3/8 from the cross tee insert which is where the small hole is, giving the wall hanger is 7/8" in wide. Good thing you did not cut it short.

Hey Jeff; Love the videos, but I have watched 14:15 to 15:14 about 20 times and I still don't understand why you are cutting 3/4 plus 3/8 within the 3" of the end of the Main runner track. If my Tile is 23.75" X 23.75", woudl I not have to cut that main runner at the 3" or behind that at 5deg angle so that it sits on the wall angle to fit my 23.75 x 23.75 tile?

Jeff, I really enjoyed watching this video on how to install a suspended ceiling! I have worked with suspended ceilings before, but have most of my experience with just cutting and installing the ceiling panels. The project I will be working on is in a bathroom as the ceiling is in bad shape and my customer would like me to install a suspened ceiling. The room is only 6' x 6', so it is very small, but there is also a light fixture in the center of the ceiling that my customer would like me to replace as well.

Well done. I saw that they now sell special clips that you can attach above the celiling that you simply insert the hang wire through and you can use them to level the T system by pinching the clips that act like a spring to hold the wire. Any idea how costly they are? Your method avoids those and is (I believe) more cost efficient. However the clips might prove handy for some.

Great video Jeff, but I followed the instructions for cutting the track ends to align with a 24 inch tile, and I ended up with too much on that end. The first 3/8 inch after the slot is all you should do. I had to redo the cut and that made my complete length too short it is now barely hanging on to the frame. You might want to clarify that in your video if you can. Otehr than that great tips and tricks, you are really good at these instructional type videos! Thanks

Im about to do my ceilling and i was not understanding that point too because i think the 3/8 and actually the 3/4 depending of the length of the edge of the track, should be the length you keep at the 3inchs section of the main track. I am thinking about installing a drop ceiling in my basement. Do you have any tips for working around around basement windows? That is a good idea to start from the middle and work to the perimeter to stabilize the grid :)

Big fan of your videos, Jeff. Any leads on where to get outside corner finishing strips? I can't find anything even remotely close to these.

Hi Jeff, my cousin used to put those ceilings in and one day when I was on holiday, I went with him to install a ceiling. I found it extremely easy and we installed this ceiling in about three hours, I was horrified when he dropped of my half of the install over six hundred pounds, so he was charging double that and he told me that if he asked less he would not get the job because people would think he was not doing a good job. I put a dropped ceiling in my house and as you have shown it is one of the easiest jobs around and I would not feel comfortable charging the prices he did as a result I have only installed two dropped ceilings in my lifetime.

back in the day a laser level was very rare and expensive. now it is very affordable but folks don't know the option.....until now! Cheers!

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Right, let's say you (somehow) don't have a laser level, do you then measure from the floor or from the bottom of the joists to draw your line? Would you then use a level to draw the line itself between measured points?
@jasongarrett7633
@jasongarrett7633 2 жыл бұрын
@@noelrodrigue5542 Depends on how big the room is. You can measure down off the joist in the corners if it’s a square room. You can mark your height for the top of the mold and level with a level and then chalk the wall to the corner mark with level on the next wall and then chalk that wall. Go all the way around the room this way. Pull some strings across and level ceiling to the strings.

💥 14:31 Why was it 3/8 plus 3/4 here? It’s the most important part and I want to get that right. Thank you otherwise for this great info

I think this is wrong. You can see in the finished product that he's actually using cut panels on the edges, not full sized ones, so he doesn't actually put this into practice. I think in theory, the measurement should actually try to put the slot inside the rail by the amount of overlap the tile has. So 3/8 in this case. That makes the measurement from the slot (width of edge rail) - (tile overlap), or 3/4 MINUS 3/8 in this case. This obviously only applies if you're putting full size tiles around the edge.

For low ceiling heights, check out the CeilingMAX system. I’ve been switching over my crummy old metal system that the prior owner installed decades ago in many areas with 0-1” of clearance above the tiles, and it’s basically impossible to remove and put back together without completely destroying the tiles, metal frame, or both. If you destroy the tiles & frame when taking them down to access plumbing/electric/etc, seems like there’s no real benefit to having a traditional drop ceiling in these situations. As a functional alternative for low clearance situations, definitely check out the CeilingMAX. Added benefit is that it’s 100% plastic and won’t rust if ever exposed to moisture. I bought mine in a kit from Home Depot, but I think they can be ordered from a bunch of places online.

At 14:39 in the video, you cut the main tee 1 1/4" past the slot for the cross channel. Why? Should not the first cross tee want to be 24" , not 25 1/4" from the wall? The overall width of a tile is 23 3/4". I check your videos before I start any home reno project.
