Why didn't the government step in, and finish the homes, and rent them out as council housing? What a waste of potential accomodation.
@tonymaries16525 жыл бұрын
Awful for this couple who thought they were making the right decision to secure their future. I wouldn't trust the government - which government would it be anyway? Westminster or Stormont? Perhaps a realistic future for this estate might be something similar to what is going on in Toxteth. People who will make a commitment to live in the properties and work locally get a property for £1. The property developer should pick up the tab for the shortfall, creating a housing development which has come to this. Seadba and Mairead should be top of the list if they would ever consider going back. Wonderful people who would be a pillar of the community wherever they choose to go.

Oh wow, I am so very sorry for the Billings. Much of the same happened here in the U.S., and back then, my wife and I were living in Las Vegas, NV. I had bought my new home in 2003 and was all right. I worked for the federal gov't and had a good and fair mortgage with my Veteran's Administration backing my loan (fixed rate of 5%). Not very many other folks in Las Vegas were that lucky, though, and the city really suffered through a very, very bad time. LOTS of foreclosures and lots more people losing their jobs in the casinos, in addition to their homes. They say that we're probably going to go through another financial crisis in the not too distant future, largely because nothing was done to prevent what happened in 2008. They didn't reinstate the Glass-Steagall laws that were put in place after the 1929 crash and not a one of the corrupt banking/financial institutions were ever held to account for their shady dealings that caused the crash in 2008. The situation sucks, which is exactly why I am voting for Sen. Elizabeth Warren in the upcoming 2020 U.S. elections. I've had enough of the crooked Republicans and their asshole, scheister politicians. Good luck to the Billingses. I do hope and pray that things have worked out for them, somehow. I watched a number of these videos about incomplete houses with underwater mortgages. This is happening all over the world. The elephant in the room are the bankers who wrote the legislation that legalized complex lending devices designed as a debt trap. Then they bundle-up the mortgages and sold in them unwarey investors or employee pension plans. They knew full well that when the interest re-adjusted that it would result is losses for all involved. This was a massive debt trap on the part of the banks that insures that the only one who wins are the banks. The only government and people to defy this criminal situation is Iceland.. They said, Fuck you!.. England and the Nederlands threatened to put Iceland on the terrorist list. That ought to tell you something..

They're young and think bankruptcy is a terrible thing that will be such a burden. It isn't. After a decade it will probably even be off the credit reporting agencies books and getting loans will not be that difficult. Plus there are understanding loan places who will work with them. Especially after bankruptcy since they know the couple have no other debts. That will actually work in their favor. They are clearly hard working people who did not want to do it in the first place. They'll be fine. Hopefully they have also learned that is is better to save for what they want than go deeply into debt. Especially that deeply. Debt is one of the worst legal scourges there is. It should be avoided if at all possible. Being free of debt will make their lives so much better, bankruptcy not withstanding.

I went through the same thing in the United States; eventually, along with losing our house and its value, my wife divorced me. Later, I decided to retire, leave the country and most of my ties to it and move to the less fortunate country of the Philippines. In spite of my X taking a third of my pension money, I've been able to on Social Security acquire an interest-free contract on a nice new home and remarry. I also have an adopted daughter with a baby due in May. I think if I had been much smarter, I could've avoided the calamity of the real estate crash, but I would have ended up divorced anyway and joined with the rest of middle-aged divorced American men suffering pointless and purposeless lives. Unlike American women, there are women in the world, who still find men to be important. American middle-aged men should realize they don't have to submit themselves to a relegated lifestyle of isolation living in some empty ghost town where it's relatively cheap to live. All they need to do is forget the American nightmare, leave and travel somewhere else where dreams are not only more pleasant but possible. Along with others, that's what I did with no regrets.

Values went down for several years but it didn't really effect anyone. It wasn't anything I did right, I just got lucky on when and where I bought. They were doing exactly what I did 15 years earlier but the bottom fell out on them. That's what you do for your future. You buy a home when you can and you work to pay it off so you have an asset & a secure, cheap place to live when you are older. They were doing exactly what you are supposed to do for a secure future but it went bad on them in a way nobody could have predicted. It hurts my heart to see things like that.

Wow....interesting to learn that the stories from housing bubble and mortgage crisis in the US and Europe are so similar. Doesn't make it any easier, but I am curious now to understand if the same sub-prime borrowing and over-leveraging which existed in the US was also a root cause of Northern Ireland's problems.

Its was really tough luck but I think these two will have what it takes to move on. Hopefully they can laugh about it one day.

How terribly sad, what a way to start a life together........you are obviously strong and will survive this..........wish we could have an update on how they are doing now...........why wouldn’t the government step in, what a waste of housing

So much potential in that piece of land for a developer just left to wreck and ruin. I have little tolerance for vandals. They have no respect.

There is a certain race of people who go around in vans and caravans as if they are homeless, they take everything from new builds or pubs left empty and build themselves mansions with no planning permission. I live in Cambridge UK and it goes on here. Builders install security and have guards on site at all times. Pubs cant be left empty because everything is ripped out after just one night sometimes. Unbelievable. Poor people. God Bless them.

I got my first credit card when I was 45 or so. I had to get a secured card with a balance of 250. When I did good with this they upped it to 500 and eventually 1000 and finally unlimited after a few years. I bought cars and own a home. I paid cash for my cars, and I still do. If I dont have the money for something ..I DONT BUY IT! Im 68 nw. When I was coming up they didnt just give CC away. They were hard to get. My son who is 33 has a stack of them, and he is always in debt. He has finally learned, but he was hardheaded, like most young people. I never use my ONE credit card. If I do I pay the balance at the end of the month. I wont let those blood suckers make money from me. No car interest, nothiing. When you buy a car, you practically pay for it twice. Why? The dumbest creatures are the ones who get a 6 yr note! STupid. Do without. Save,

That was over 10 years ago. I bet the houses are probably been resold and work twice what they initially paid for it by now. How did the government not buy all those houses for $1 each and turn them in council houses?

I wish them all the best. its only for five years that they won't be able to get credit and after that the slate is clean.

Does the sun even shine in Ireland & Northern Ireland? The weather there is even more pathetic than the weather across the Irish Sea.

Property is a minefield; many people simply do not see beyond the cheap price tags. Cheap always comes at a price; in fact, everything has a catch. Apart from that, there are loads of reasons why I would never buy any end terrace property, on any brand ''new'' development.

To the two lovely people that this has happened to. You have your health and EACHOTHER. And you are good good people. Things will get better. Better than you ever thought possible. It will all be ok in time. As for the bastards that got away with this and the corrupt laws and judges who allowed it to happen ?? KARMA WILL GET THEM ALL. YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW. you two deserve better and will eventually have the blessed life you worked for and deserve
