Oh my gosh thanks for this! I’m so excited that I found you. I am planning to homeschool my 8th grader for the first tine and am now trying to quickly decide whether to also homeschool my 10th grader. This video was so helpful!!! I have a million questions but I don’t know what to ask first! I’m going to start by watching your older videos. My 10th grader is also advanced so I want to make sure he’s getting a quality education and being challenged.

11th grade! Wow, so exciting to be getting so close to graduation. High school years seem to fly by! I took Calculus in high school as well, but the homeschool curriculum we had available at the time was not that great, I think what you're using sounds like it'll be a lot more enjoyable. That chemistry kit looks like it will be so much fun!

Thank you again for all of these awesome videos. I've watched them before, but I feel myself re-watching them over and over because you have so much solid information in them. Two quick questions: 1) did you/Katie like the chemistry course as much as the biology course?; 2) did you/Katie like the pre-calc course as much as the Algebra 2 course? We just started the Shormann Algebra 2 and definitely love it (came from Saxon). I am planning to have my son take the Biology course as well. However, I'm not sure yet about the chemistry and pre-calc.

Great book selections! I will be looking at your other videos for other novels to read for my son that will be in 9th! I know you said that your daughter doesn't like writing papers and mine hate writing, so I was curious with all the papers she is writing, did you help her or did she already understand how to write papers? If I gave my son a 5 page paper, I'm pretty sure he would shit down only because he has some comprehension issues! Thanks! :-)

I've been stressing the last couple of weeks trying to prepare my 13 year old for high school. I woke up this morning with such a peace from the Holy Spirit. He said all will be well and He dropped you in my heart. I really believe if I follow your wisdom, we will be just fine. Do you have a system for how to assign electives? My daughter will be doing all the cores and foreign language. I'm not sure if we should not do violin and gymnastics so she isn't overwhelmed.
@simplejoyfilledliving
@simplejoyfilledliving 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and I’m so glad that you’re feeling peace about homeschooling! I let my daughter decide on electives. She was taking a lot of dance before we moved so we used one dance class as PE and 2 for fine arts electives. The rule of thumb is 150 hours for 1credit and 75 hours for 1/2 credit. Katie also wanted to do health so we added Abeka Health her freshman year as well. My advice for 9th grade is don’t load her up too much unless she’s doing it anyway. So if she’s doing gymnastics and violin already, definitely take the credits. Gymnastics could be PE if you have enough hours and violin could be fine arts. You can also combine hours over 2 years to add up to the 150 hours if you need to.
@favored4life
@favored4life 3 жыл бұрын
@Our Blessed Life @Our Blessed Life thank you. I've read that the credit hours are 120 or 180. I'm guessing as long as you land between 120-180, one should be fine. I loved your review for Shoremann Biology but heard so many great things about Apologia Biology (I can't seem to find many reviews for Shoremann). You mentioned in the review video that Shoremann is more intense than Apologia and could be deemed AP. My daughter wants to study medicine in college so I want her science classes to be strong. What made you decide to choose Shoremann? I've watched your honors video. It seems like the honors designation is really broad; do we just assign extra work as we desire? Can you do a video showing how you determine what's honors for course? It seems like most of your daughters courses are honors. I know you said you have a guide from your umbrella; I can't seem to find that in Maryland. Thank you so much.

I don't know how I missed this video when it came out...but I am so happy to see your choices. I hate that y'all are having to wait for TGAB LA materials. Are you going to do the honors book studies in the interim? My daughter is so excited to start LA 1 this year. The booklets are just so beautifully laid out and well done. // My daughter takes piano, and she is going to earn a credit each year of high school b/c of how many hours she dedicates to practicing and with her lessons. I love that in homeschooling high school we are able to customize a lot of their learning around our students' interests! // I'm really interested in hearing how Masterbooks World History goes. I've read a lot of mixed reviews about their World History. Most people LOVE the American History course, but the World History course has lots of "opinions" towards it. -- My middle son is going to use the World's Story by MB for 7th grade. You gave such a high recommendation of MB that I decided to try it out! :) Sorry this long...but 1 question: Is the Fluenz Spanish good? I found out that Duo Lingo added in some homosexual examples and other questionable lessons. Have you found Fluenz to be appropriate throughout the lessons? -- Thanks for your videos and all your wisdom!!!
@simplejoyfilledliving
@simplejoyfilledliving 4 жыл бұрын
For language arts, we plan to have Katie do her extra honors books first. The MB World History was revised this year so I sold the old one and bought the new one. I’ll let you know how we like it. We haven’t noticed anything inappropriate in the Fluenz French so far. Of the 5 levels, Katie has done level 1 and 2/3 of level 2.

Amber would you give me more information about the bad content in the Duo app? I've been using it for 3 years, learned Italian with it. Hi, thanks for this information!! Quick question, do have a resource that helps you know what to add to curriculum to make it college prep or honors?
@simplejoyfilledliving
@simplejoyfilledliving 2 жыл бұрын
Honors just needs to be harder than the original class and more work. So whatever you do, take the original class and then add to it. For English, it is standard to do extra novels and papers, for math and science, you can add a project with a decent size term paper (10 pages or so, fully cited), for history you can do several smaller projects (extra reading, smaller essays) or a larger term paper. The main thing is extra, harder work. Not just a grading scale change, etc. I have a video that talks in detail about how I made TG&TB language arts honors: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enqkcpuGqsytp9U
@riversideacres295
@riversideacres295 4 жыл бұрын
How will you do the other book studies? TGATB only offers 3 extra book studies so after the first year you would have to choose your own novels if doing 3 per year, is that correct? I love the book studies but not sure I could come up with my own for other novels. Any advice would be appreciated, starting high school in the fall with our first 😬.
@simplejoyfilledliving
@simplejoyfilledliving 4 жыл бұрын
We’ve yet to use the book studies although I did get one for this year. Usually I order books based on if we are doing American Lit or British and I have her read it. Sometimes she will write a persuasive paper on one or two of the novels. This year we’re doing British lit so I searched “high school British literature and picked what we liked from the list. I did the same for American in 10th grade. Also Sonlight’s book lists are good too.

We hated the Master’s American History. The essay questions were set up where there was no right or wrong answers, it required the student’s opinion as answers. It glossed over history. There was not enough “meat” to it, and we found that a lot of the book was written from the writer’s perspective. I would recommend anyone interested in that book to physically look at the book before buying it. Turning it into an “honors” course would mean reading an actual history book. Just our experience, but buyer beware! I think the Master books website allows you to preview portions of their books. Please do that before spending your money on that “history” book.
@simplejoyfilledliving

Sorry you didn’t enjoy that one. I’m glad there are so many good history programs out there to choose from. You are correct, there is a sample on the MasterBooks website to review their high school history programs before buying it. We never do just a textbook for history though, we always include original documents. It helps get past the bias of the author.
