This was so very helpful, we’ve just started our school year (Southern Hemisphere) and we’re already completely off the rails. 😢 So I am going to try your ideas, thank you!!!

This time of year is always exceptionally hard to keep things on the rails! It's the same in public school. Give yourself and your kids lots of grace and get outside, even if it's yucky out, 🥶 Happy homeschooling!

We do a flow, have group and individual subjects, we do our morning basket during breakfast, kids handle their "morning jobs" after breakfast but before school starts. My kids are young so I do set a timer for reading and math so we don't go over 20min for either (in reality, math is usually done in 15min and reading in 10-15min). By setting a timer I don't push us past a time frame that gives us best effort and attention. We alternate our days for group subjects (currently, science and Spanish), we finished our history for the year. We also alternate daily our enrichment subjects (artist study, poet study, composer, and geography). These are done during lunch. Big win for us is reading things during meal times! Breakfast is Bible, daily poem, and family read aloud (which we usually have 2 books going at a time). Lunch will be our enrichment topic and then either mothergoose, fairy tale, habit training, or poetry. Snack times usually includes our OTHER looping read aloud that we didn't touch on with breakfast. I finally feel good about touching so many things, and yet, not feeling rushed!

I've been a homeschooling mama to 6 kids for many years. We've had some stressful years, let me tell you! Now, I'm down to just one student, entering 4th grade this fall. I've got alot planned for the year but, trying to cover every subject every day is wearing us down. He's an excellent student but I just feel we're chewing too much every day. We want it to be fun. Your homeschool schedule is manageable. Thank you very much!!

These were super helpful and practical tips. Your tips also allow for so much freedom, all while accomplishing a ton! We do group subjects then individual subjects as a flow, no time stamps. Which is especially helpful with a non-stop toddler swarming us like a hungry shark.

My son was in SPED in public school. After a year at home he has been declared not to have a lasting disability, just a learning difference. 😁 He still has ADD, anxiety, and some spectrum tendencies.

These are all such great tips! I wound up doing similarly with Science and History. It was way too much to get everything out for both subjects every day. We use Sonlight so there were lots of books and teachers manuals to maneuver etc. so we now do Science on Mon/Tues and History on Wed/Thur. and just do the whole weeks schedule in those 2 days.

Hi, question for you - how many science and history lessons do you complete in 1 week? This will be our first year in the fall so all the scheduling options & different # of lessons per curriculum is very overwhelming. I love your schedule! Great ideas!
@thequarteracre49142 жыл бұрын
So honestly it varies. Some weeks 1 lesson and some weeks to 2 or 3 lessons depending on how long the lessons are and how many supplemental activities I might have for the lesson. If my kids are really in the groove during history or science we might keep going or I might find a fun KZbin video to watch to go along with it. That's the beauty of homeschooling, it can move at your pace. The last two weeks we did 2 science lessons each time so that we were ahead of the game for this week and next week to take that time off from science since our schedule is packed with a ballet production that were helping put on.

Very interesting and has given me a lot to think about as I am thinking through how to change things up at the moment. We don't have family subjects and individual subjects only because I only have 1 student, but I can see the value of your system for multiple children. One question- by doing 1 subject a day eg science, but a longer session, do you find they stay focused to the end? I feel my girl can get overloaded with info after a while so its better to do a short lesson 2-3 times a week. And if we stretch out a topic for too long is doing 1 lesson a week, interest wans. Also if your daily schedule goes to plan (no interruptions) how long does a school day take? Thanks.
@thequarteracre49143 жыл бұрын
The kids definitely stay focused, because we make sure that the lesson is more dynamic in that there are experiments or hands-on elements, art projects, as well as note taking and lots of time for questions and diving deeper into the parts of the lesson that interested them the most. For my daughter our days are typically over by 11:30 she's in the first grade. For my son who is in Middle School our days typically run until about 12 p.m. to 1:30 depending on his motivation for the day LOL
