Hi Friends! Today is a homeschool update, recapping the first 4-5 weeks of the new school year. We've made some changes and had some realizations. We've added things and taken things off of the to-do list. We're now in our 5th year of homeschooling, and we know that each year there is always some reconfiguring that needs to happen during the first few weeks of school until you can get settled into a nice groove. I'm just over here, still working on the kinks that need to be straightened out, and that's what I want to share today!

My daughter uses TGATB math 5 and was taking about an hour and a half to complete lessons. I switched to doing the mini lessons with her instead of her watching the videos and WOW! Apparently the videos were really slowing her down. She said she would get distracted and have to rewatch the video multiple times or wouldn’t grasp the concept. She’s on lesson 36 and math is now taking between 30-45 minutes.

Totally feel you. Focus on knowledge building and don’t worry about instruction. Science. Social studies. Literature. Real life skills like baking and sewing. All that good stuff will fuel any return to academics. She can work on reading game instructions or more “functional” words, math, etc. you’re so great mama.

We are finishing level K math and we are switching to Saxon. The good and the beautiful really looked so beautiful when I first got it and it’s the first curriculum I have ever used. The problems I have with the math is my daughter can read. She reads the teacher instructions and spend more time talking about the stories, coloring, or distracted by the games. I’m realizing we need the teacher manual separate, simple math problems, and hands on with manipulatives. I think learning about different people in the world, geography, other stories that they put in we will learn through reading and books. Best part about homeschooling is you get to make changes!

We are using the new TGTB level 4 math and I noticed it was taking a long time to complete as well. I typically go through the review questions and highlight the problems I want her to do (typically only half of the problems). If she gets them all correct we move on to the next lesson. If she gets them wrong we go over it and I have her complete a couple more problems to show she understands before moving on. This process works well for us and she’s usually done within 45 minutes (an hour tops).

I’ve solely used Abeka math for K4-11th grade over the last 14 years of homeschooling. I’m trying out TGTB math with my sixth grader this year, and yes, it takes her well over an hour to complete her lessons. That being said, Abeka took just as long and she didn’t retain it, nor did she enjoy it. I’m glad TGTB is challenging yet also fun. My daughter loves doing her math now, even if there are tears, here and there, because it takes so long. My rule is, if she has worked for an hour and she still isn’t done, she has to stop and move on to her next class, and just come back to it later in the day to prevent mental burnout.

I had to slow down with my son at the end of last year. He was a young kindergartener, and by the end of the curriculum it was too much for him. I could tell he wasn't mentally mature enough to grasp it. We were also doing the old TGTB, which I feel lto be advanced anyway. We paused the curriculum, only read books for a few weeks, then went to masterbooks. He finished their first grade curriculum by Christmas break this year. We are starting TGTB first grade after Christmas. I had him read through some, and it is just right for him now! We may just continue to stay half a year behind for awhile. Sometimes they just need to slow down and let their little brains catch up!

We wanted to love TGTB Math so much. I even went and bought all the math boxes. I'm now going to be selling them. I made the switch to Math You See and love it. For being mastery, it has so much built in review. It's a little nerve racking that they don't learn concepts the same order as "standard," but it all evens out eventually. I think her longest lesson has taken 20mins.

That’s part of our job😊 I’m sure you have heard me say this before, but we use Easy Peasy for math for Easton and Zoe (levels 2 & 4). I am EBLI trained now and I’m working with my 4 year old in the grade 1 language abeka book. If I can make a recommendation. Without knowing her particulars, the two exercises they recommend is encoding and decoding. So I’m her reader she would read each passage 3 times. The first time is for accuracy, the second for fluency and the third for orthographic mapping and prosody. The encoding piece would be her spelling and I would recommend spelling words that she read. You would correct her immediately and let her re write the word once with assistance and once without. And wait 3 ? days to review the spelling / rule. Recall is huge. See “make it stick” which really advocates that the struggle is important to learning. Maybe instead of switching to something, pause the abeka materials and just use the words / math on a whiteboard away from the paper pressure. Recall recall recall. And may the force be with you

My two eldest were very different from one another. While one would take 15-25 min in math (he aimed to finish fast, math concepts came easily to him), the other would take her time to understand concepts stress free, breaks in between, and eventually they both graduated and are now both seniors in college and things have not changed. Don’t worry about your daughter taking longer, unless she is struggling with concepts, other than that some students just take a bit longer to process information and make sense of it. It really says a lot that they’re willing to commit that much more time to understand any one subject, that’s an amazing skill (what drive!).

My daughter is in "5th" grade but finishing up her 4th grade math from tgtb (15lessons away from finishing). Since math 3, it's always taken her about 1hr-1.5hrs. This year I started setting a timer for 30mins after the video portion was done and she will finish with it the next day. And then typically she won't start the next lesson until the following day. Maybe you could just add a few Costco (or others) level K workbooks for Lola to close the gap until she starts the level one abeka program? We tried TGTB math for the first time this year. The level 2 is great, so far it seems to be appropriate for age level and nice short lessons. The level 6 on the other hand, I can totally relate to what your saying. It was taking my son 1.5 hours per lesson and we were both starting to dread this part of the day. The content it was teaching also seemed to be very advanced. Luckily I had a brand new grade 6 math program from another company so we switched after a month, and has made our days so much smoother. We don't dread math anymore. So I definitely have mixed feelings about TGTB math, I was hoping to love it for both boys, but so far is working only for the younger grade.

@@thepracticalhomeschooler We switched to Math Lessons for a Living Education. He had used all levels from level 2 onward and has done really well with the more gentler approach. Unfortunately the 2 math programs are kind of at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of workload, but TGTB was really overwhelming us both. I'm thinking about trying Christian Lights Math for grade 7 as Math Lessons for a living Education only goes up to grade 6. And I wasn't enthusiastic about master books math after elementary levels. It might be trial and error for a bit. I find the higher the grade, the less options for curriculum there are available. 🤷‍♀️

TGTB Math 4 takes my son forever too, I can’t figure out why. My older 9th grade son does ALEKS online and I just have him cap it at 45 minutes a day.

Yea not sure what that’s about. I feel like 45 minutes at this point (depending on the child) should be good. But maybe I’m way off 🤷🏻‍♀️🫠

@@thepracticalhomeschooler I would definitely like 45 minutes to be the MAX for TGTB, but a full lesson is taking more like an hour… and that’s skipping the mental math book.

I have been a bit frustrated with the math level 2 this year as well. They lack instruction on a few things and actually has confused me at times.

I think it's a good idea that you're looking ahead with your 1st grader to avoid burn out or getting ahead of what she's really ready for. I'm at a bit of a tricky point with Cyrus with reading in that regard...he's starting to blend letters and has a lot of interest in learning to read, but I don't think he's ready for the actual pace of a reading program yet...so I'm just super slowly starting a reading program with him, splitting up a lesson into multiple days, reviewing the same blending concepts in different ways, and just having fun with doing little pieces of it while I give him some time to get a little older. I had some similar issues with TGATB math in kindergarten for Cyrus...some really fun activities but then some big jumps. Loved listening to your update!

could you do a gap year with Lola and do TGATB Level K LA then pick up Abeka next year (or even in the January)

You know, I did look into that. I’ve looked into a few different options but haven’t settled on anything just yet.

My 5 year missed the cut off (September). But she was ready to do Kindergarten level work. I worried that the workload would catch up on her so I decided to do TGATB Level K and only do 60 (half) lessons for her Kindergarten year and the other half next year. So we have been taking it reallly slow. You could do the last half of TGATB or even the new one and maybe it will be a good gap filler for you?

My daughter, in 5th, also likes to have homework....and grades. We have started this year calculating grades for her. Love the teachers club card. Definitely going to sign up for that. Is there alot on there for 5th grade?

@@thepracticalhomeschooler I know right!! Lol. I also was going to say that we tried another curriculum for math thr beginning of our year and we have changed back to TGTB for 5th. The other curriculum and TGTB both take close to an hour, sometimes more depending on the topic. I think it’s just 5th grade. 🤷🏼‍♀️ but we love TGTB math..not sure why I even changed and tried something else.
