As a 90s homeschooled kid- this spoke to my soul. My childhood was more isolated than any lockdown ever. We didn't have the internet, no social media ect.. it was just us kids, mom and dad. We were lucky to do activities with other kids maybe a couple times a month, not even that! Most if not all our social life was hanging with the kids at church and going on youth group trips. But we had time to think, be creative, and more time to study. I think it molded me into the person I was today. Not a bad thing.

Social life included Awana at church, Gymnastics classes then team, Christian Camps as an individual not with my church. Made some great friends there in high school. Meet more homeschoolers at the Bible Bee, similar to a spelling bee, just studying a book of the Bible and memorizing and reciting passages.

This is great. I wasn’t homeschooled but grew up in a one and 1/2 income household where my mom stayed home and was a housewife and she ran a little in home daycare. I can count on one hand the amount of times I ate out at fast food or even a restaurant for that matter unless it was a really special occasion. My mom was the best cook, my dad an artist and they both are creative genius’s. We had homemade versions of everything. At the time maybe it didn’t seem as cool (even though I did) but it was so special to have a playhouse made by my dad the size of a tiny home or a trampoline. Or he’d set up his old army green canvas tent and our military supply store cots and leave it up all summer to sleep in or play in. We had a trampoline. We had two different tree houses. No phones, barely any tv. We listened to tapes cds the radio, rode my bike all over our side of town until dark. This was late 80’s early 90’s. We had imagination. I wish more parents were more present for their kids and could leave media outta of our homes until the kids are a little older. I miss the good ole days.

Back in early 2000’s I homeschooled my 3 through middle and high school due to crappy school system. We complied with our state laws, had a independent 3 rd party test them at the end of every year. 3 days of in depth testing a total of 9 hours to thoroughly evaluate their progress. Our children also had some classes at the local community college, which counted for graduation and were credits for college. They are all in their 30’s, successful and know how to think for themselves. Every sacrifice made for them and their education was worth it.

So sorry to hear that apparently John’s parents must’ve kept him isolated from society. As homeschoolers, this is NOT the norm. Perhaps it was in the 90’s when it wasn’t popular yet, and mostly fringe groups were doing it. The majority today have their children involved in various social activities and group classes. They tend to be more active and involved in society than their public schooled counterparts. This is NOT what’s happening for children right now during the pandemic, and it’s SO very sad! It must be like a jail!!!What’s sadder is that people largely have the impression that public school online is the same as being homeschooled in a normal, healthy, socializing family. Many things John shared are hilariously true. But not the social isolation he experienced. 😢 I also guess I must’ve been a liberal homeschooling parent, because I always taught my children alternative viewpoints to Christianity and moral issues. I allowed them to watch (with me) some rated R movies if I thought the content was worthwhile and could foster good discussions on life. I allowed them to drink alcohol responsibly with special meals once they were 16. We read together such books as “All Quiet On The Western Front,” and “Brave New World” for literature. We studied evolution versus creationism so they could see the factual evidence and learn how to spot arguments and beliefs that aren’t logical. And yes, after all of this, my grown sons turned out desiring to follow Christ, and they actually know WHY they believe what they do, because they were part of the process. And although faith in the God of the Bible is not testable, observable and repeatable (the 3 laws of science), a scientific study of creation points to the NEED of a creator for things to be the way we observe. Evolution requires a much bigger, illogical faith. We studied government and other beliefs so they could understand why people believe what they do. I hope and pray that the children being public schooled online during this pandemic, along with those who’ve had bad experiences as actual homeschoolers, will be able to find healing.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! All of this! I was involved in several extracurriculars that helped socialize me during my homeschool education. We took the time to go to museums or go on weekend trips to historical sites. I was reading Les Miserables and Atlas Shrugged by the time I was 16 not because I was forced to but because I wanted to. We studied the bible but also discussed other religions and WHY we believed what we believed based on historical evidence. My sibling and I both received academic scholarships and finished our STEM degrees with jobs waiting for us. Whenever the subject of homeschooling comes up, I always try to educate people on the realities of homeschooling, not the unsocialized, idiotic kids you hear about.

Think this is a bit of an exaggeration, kinda like a 'joke'. (To make it funny.....) I doubt his mom isolated him, he is very much an outgoing individual with a funny personality. Just like I doubt his mom could make the entire chick fe le menu with those few ingredients.......It is called humor. It is relatable and very laughable. If you watch any of his videos...they are all exaggerated, makes it humorous. Smile and enjoy! :)

Totally with you. My family homeschooled in the late 80s with oldest siblings till around 2010 for me. We were very social. We had friends up and down the street. We had friends at church and the church programs that we attended from youth till teens. We participated in the local homeschool group and had friends there. I never lacked for friends or things to do. I also was extremely imaginative and would play happily alone for hours but was fine both ways. When people would ask if we were antisocial I was confused as a kid cause I didn't understand why they would think that of us. Unfortunately some seem to homeschool solely to avoid the world and keep their kids isolated unnecessarily.

Absolute respect to you Mamma!!! I'm a homeschooler of 1 (though I homeschooled another temporarily and she's adult now) I can't imagine how 'adaptable' you would have to be to homeschool for 35 years? Do the kids look back with fondness?

@@helenbrown6612 some do; some don’t. But even the one or two who don’t homeschooled their own kids during the Covid mask-up! 😉 5 currently homeschool their children just for personal convictions.
