YES! Homeschooler of an only child here- 15 year old son. This was so helpful. Hope to see more of this covered more often. We tend to do 80% of everything as a read aloud together. We enjoy learning right alongside each other, so it's a struggle to let go and make him do books independently.

This was so encouraging! My son is not an only child, but my other child is an adult, 11 years older, and she was not homeschooled. I do find myself struggling with trying to prove myself with his success.

I have really been struggling with homeschooling my only. This encouragement was well timed. Thank you! We’ve used SCM curriculum and book suggestions almost exclusively since kindergarten. Trying to trust the process and not switch around. My daughter starts 5th grade this year. We live in FL and unfortunately there aren’t any CM co-ops near us to get support. Wish there was an easy way to connect with other SCM families in our area. Hugs to all the hard working moms (and dads) of “onlys”.

Thank you for joining us and sharing your experience! Have you already tried searching the homeschool groups section of SCM's website "Charlotte Mason Together?" simplycharlottemason.com/charlotte-mason-together/ Here you can search for groups in your area as well as post your information if you are interested in starting a group, who knows maybe there is someone out there who is also looking to connect! Another idea is that in some areas as you mention groups with a Charlotte Mason specific focus can be hard to come by, however perhaps there is a local more general Christian homeschooling group that you could join for some community. Wishing you all the best in your homeschooling journey.

Thank you! Yes, I’ve checked the site and nothing is available near us. Definitely thought of starting something but haven’t figured out logistics. It’s so exciting to see SCM shining light on homeschooling an only! Thank you!@@SimplyCharlotteMason

I'm a true introvert and have a couple of ideas for some healthy distance from an only child: From an early age, my son and I had a daily 1 hour to 1.5 hour time after lunch we called Personal Reading Time (PRT). We both went to our bedrooms and entertained ourselves quietly for a while. He didn't have to read, but could draw, play quietly (Legos, trains, blocks), nap, listen quietly to an audiobook, etc. This gave both of us time to reflect, process the morning, and unconsciously reset for the rest of the day. After PRT, we usually went outside or to a local park where we could both drink in the restorative power of nature -- each in our own way. I often took my nature journal and travel paint set, and would sit on a blanket while my son explored (within eyesight in the early years). He inevitably found a dam to build, a tree to climb, a creek to wade in, or a rock to turn over. He'd find something interesting to run and tell me about, but then he'd be off again to discover for himself (by himself). Charlotte Mason gave us tons of ideas in Volume I: Home Education, Part II: Out-of-Door Life for the Children.

Thank you for covering this topic. I was very encouraged hearing that she also had struggles with oral narration. So many of the tips and techniques given for narration in the CM world are not applicable to an only child. One thing I have found as a mom to an only child Because I don't have anything to compare my son to, when problems arise and things aren't getting easier, as a mother teacher I feel that I am failing us. It's encouraging to hear I'm not the only one struggling with this. Again, thank you Sonya and team for all that y'all do. ❤
