This is my second year of homeschooling, and I have a 5th grader. I totally agree with you about the concerns with socialization, but what helps a lot is being involved with sports. My daughter is 10 years old and she has four years of martial arts with the same group of friends. They see each other five times a week (Mon-Fri), they compete together, and they do play dates very regularly.

Resonate with martial arts. They are in a middle school age group. Plus the concepts of respect, discipline, caring for yourself & family are always in every session. Her personal development has really grown.

Have you ever thought of looking into Girl Scouts? My daughter was hungering for the opportunity to meet and befriend other girls her age, and she is thriving in her Girl Scout community. I actually love how she’s responded to it so much that I am actively volunteering to help provide her the best experience she can get, as well as have extra time with her. She is very patch/badge motivated and I have found it so fun to use that motivation for interest-led learning in the home. Many girls in our troop don’t care about that, but come for the fun and engaging meetings, or for the events and outings. The Girl Scouts really encourage girls to make the experience their own, and we have loved it.

I really feel what you said about being more empathetic toward my preteen daughter. I had a similar experience with my son, but this was a new bundle of feelings. 😅 Thanks for the book rec!

I’m halfway through 5th with my oldest and I’m stressing too. Definitely feeling the pressure (AND the wild emotions that she’s going through too!) Send help 😭

Thank You for telling us how empathetic you are trying to be with your 12 year old. Because when my daughter turned 12, it was like a slap in the face. One day she was my sweet little girl and the next day a disrespectful /attitudinal girl. But I haven't thought to be empathetic. I've been taking it personal. And now maybe I can be more empathetic to her.

For my 10 year old I signed her up for a tween class on outschool . She loves it and always leaves the class with a mood.. the other children are also homeschoolers.

I'm opening a microschool for homeschoolers with flexible attendance options in Middlesex County, NJ just for middle schoolers. My focus is on middle school because of how much love they need and how sometimes their size and the way they express their needs makes them misunderstood. When my daughter was in middle school we had a blank journal that we would write to each other in. We would never verbally discuss what was in it. We just left it on each other's night stand when we were done with our turn, and we spilled all our biggest questions, thoughts and emotions in it. It gave her an outlet that wasn't embarrassing where nothing was off limits, and it gave me the opportunity to understand her and ease her mind. Before homeschooling I was a middle school teacher and I know how big those emotions can get. Sometimes us homeschool moms need extra people to love on them. You are clearly doing such a wonderful job. She knows she's loved and that you have her back. God bless you, Mama!

I have a 5th, 6th, and 7th grader this year. My 5th grade daughter is doing 6th grade work with my son, and my 7th grade daughter attempted public school then came back.... but she's my more "challenging" child. This year has been one of the roughest with my middle schoolers and hormones, and my 5 and 7 year old children have such teacher intensive curriculums.. I've felt so stretched and burned out. Trying to figure this out ❤thank you for this video, Brit! You're doing such a wonderful job raising your daughters and I love coming here for tips and encouragement. - Ashley (my mom almost named me Britney) 😅

You’re doing such a great job ❤ I’ve noticed that for us too this year that there is always an abundance of younger kids but it’s harder for middle school and older ones (but maybe I need to search specifically for that more). And yes, Raising Critical Thinkers is on my list too!

Yes, my 13 year old loves crochet, so she makes cell phone covers and pot holders. She loves it so much she wants to try knitting. Some days with her we hit those days when her moods are definitely fluctuating, girls go through a lot at this age. You’re doing a great job and I love your videos. I will definitely look up those books. 📕

Do your children give you a few hours of peace? I’ve been giving my kids a homeschool structure routine but I’m ready to cave and send them to school if I constantly keep hearing “Mommy….mama”. I love my kids but I need a break too.

Yes, we do have a quiet time every afternoon for me !!! I need that hour of peace to keep me sane lol I get it. On the weekends when my husband is off I have more opportunities to sneak away as well. ❤️

I don’t know your situation but when my husband is home I direct the kids to him. If I really need to rest I will throw activities on the table or something on the tv for an hour. It sounds bad but moms need breaks too. You need to make it happen. I have done it since 2016 and have had breastfeeding babies/crying toddlers. No guilt. Send them to dad or another family member. Turn on PBS , history or science movie. (Depending on age). Do something cause you are going to burn out. You got this!
