I love how you mentioned you’re not trying to make it easy for him but instead give him the tools he needs.

Great video! My oldest son who is 18 (Sr this year😱) carries a pretty heavy Dyslexia load. Sitting at a desk when there are mountains to climb and creeks to explore is SO HARD lol. When the words are flipping and swirling on the page it makes learning to read and spell such a burden. He would get hiccups & a stomach ache every morning 😔 I would give anything to go back to when he was 4yrs old and start his early years of homeschool over. I was homeschooled so I automatically started him on the same rigorous curriculum I used and it didn't work well. All those years ago there wasn't a huge variety of options, we live in the sticks and KZbin wasn't a go to for moms. If I'd known then what I know now, he would have had way less struggle days and more happy learning days. He has come so far and is able and WILLING to read aloud in front of others. It took several tries to pass his written test but got a 99% on his drive test. I wish we could go back and redo those early years and I wish he'd never had to touch a paper or computer test again but I am so dang proud of where he is today. He is working towards his welding certification and career choice. Every summer he works for ranches or construction and this summer he is working a prevailing wage job for 13 hours a day. Needless to say he comes home tired, hungry and filthy but has gas money! Such a blessing to see him thrive on the other side of books & sitting still❤️ My 9th & 6th grade boys are really enjoying GR and the freedom that comes with it.

Good advice! This video is very helpful. My 11-year old daughter was just diagnosed with non-hyper ADHD. Once she hit the "developing" years (this year), what were were doing for homeschool just wasn't working anymore; her attention span sharply decreased. Now, I am considering switching to interesting unit studies in blocks, instead of a year-long type curriculum. We, also, have switched to doing our math problems on a small, hand-held white board, taking turns with problems, which really works for her.

Definitely try out unit studies. They have worked so well for my son. I love the idea of using a white board for math.

So helpful! We live overseas where we don’t have the ability to get our son assessed, but I’m positive he has ADHD as it runs in my husband’s family and a sibling that has been diagnosed asked about assessment because of what she had seen in him. We’re just starting our 4th year of homeschool and I so get what you said about trying things until you find something that works. That floundering happened to us too but I feel like last year we hit our stride with some things and this year it helped me to zone in on what I needed to change and build on. After the first few days of school last week my son told me he was living his new materials and was excited about school this year! This is the same kid that would be having melt downs previously.

Yes! The gaps 🤣 people freak out about that but if we stick with a curriculum that isn’t working then that’s going to be more harmful than any “gaps”

My oldest has adhd and trying to modify some things this year. So you have a time limit on each subject and if he isn't finished do you just pick it up the next day? I love the schedule idea with the highlighter. I had to write our schedule daily and wasted a lot of paper lol.

We don’t have set times, but if I see he is getting frustrated or overwhelmed, we stop and pick it up later or the next day.

I totally agree i tell people all the time why are your trying to do 45 minutes of math your not proving anything. If the child is melting down for 30 minutes you didnt accomplish anything you wasted 30 minutes. Give it to them short, and simple. Quality over quantity.

@@HomeSweetHomeschoolLife We're using a mix of things. Learn Math Fast after checking out various reviews, including yours :) Brave Writer for LA with cursive and Evan Moor for spelling. BJU for Science and Herritage Studies. My son also wanted to learn about Botany so we're using Gather Round's Botany study for that. BJU materials are pretty rigorous so I'm working at pulling back and not feeling like I have to do everything in the book.
