I love the Klon with teles, strats, 335s, Les Pauls and sgs played through ac30s, black faced fenders, tweed fenders, and plexis. To me its the best pedal ever made. I remember crying to Bill about the whopping $275 I paid for it. He told me to, “buy two”. I should’ve bought ten.

For the next shootout, you ought to compare the Nobels clones. IE: Wampler "Belle", J.Rocket "Chicken Soup", "Shanks", etc. and use the original as the "baseline". The "Nordland - ODC" is made by the same guy that designed the original ODR-1 when he was with Nobels. I'd love to hear Larry's opinion on that one also.

I bought an ODR mini about 3-4 mos ago to dip my toes into the Nobels water and really liked what I heard. But, like a hostage with Stockholm syndrome, I’ve keep my TS-9 (and even the JHS Bonsai which I super dig). The Nobels are the 2nd gain stage after my compressor, before the Bonsai and ending w/ a Boss GE-7 with high mids boosted along w/ level. Add to that an Xotic EP Booster and I’ve got all the gain I need - slamming the front end of the amp just right to make it sing a little. 🙏🎸🤘🎶 Thank you tone gods!

When Tom had fresh ears, he was nailing it, easily telling the difference. I think the brain becomes confused after a bit..too much sound overwhelmed the senses. Even volume differences didn't make a difference in the beginning. Interesting test for a couple of reasons.

Absolutely. You can pretty much gage the decline in discernment over the course of elapsed time. But he has an acutely keen discernment to begin with, I'd say over the 90% mark to the average. So there's THAT. You know/agree? Plus there's the homogenization of his playing tied to the pedal's sound. Then there's uh... "Mmm, Beer" lol.. Overall though, he did great, and I agreed with his choice as well, just sittin' here listenin' Great friggin' video!

The first guitar pedal I ever bought was a Nobels ODR-1 back in the mid nineties. Didn't have a clue what it was and was desperately disappointed that it didn't sound like Nirvana. Didn't even know you were allowed to try out pedals in the shops first. Came back to it in my mid twenties and found a lot of uses for it. Now in my forties... I've cashed in, sold it. As you've demonstrated the new ones sound the same. Made my self a clone with some mods (the original Nobels shop schematic is actually out there and easy enough to find, complete with the never-implemented "boost" switch). You should ask Nobels to make a signature version for you :)

I’ve played a half dozen or so Klons and I always set it up with the volume 3/4 to almost cranked the tone a tad less than half and the gain 1/4 on a pushed clean amp. I then compared it to an AC Booster (which I’d guarantee with your back turned, it’d be extremely hard to tell the difference) my favorite Xotic pedal and I’d never buy a klon for anything over $400 if I’d buy one at all that is. I like the Wampler Tumnus better. I played J Rocketts version of the Nobel and loved it. Never played a real one. And the KIng Of Tone, well that’s what it is to me, the King. Mike is one of the nicest guys in the business as well. I thank Jim Weider for that connection. Tom DAMNIT your riffs are so killer!!! I also had for a short time and miss it to death had a M-OD John Landgraff pedal that was just at another level. This was a fun clip. More please. Now I’m going to go back, cut the time to 1/4 speed and try to learn some of the badassery licks you played. My girlfriend is really going to hate me for the next few days….😮

i bought one out of the back of vintage guitar magazine (back when it looked like a black and white newspaper) when they first came out for 300 bucks....immediately hated it and promptly sold it. most overrated piece of gear (including all guitars, amps and studio processing gear) ever made

@@501chorusecho it reminds me of Pedaltrain's "tone enhancer" pedal they had at their booth at Summer NAMM a few years ago (the only year I was unfortunate enough to go). It was literally only an LED that the foot switch turned off and on, and inside the two jacks were wired directly to each other, but all weekend, guitar players said things like "it has such a beautiful top end," "really transparent, but I miss it when it's gone," "subtle but much needed boost to the mids". Amazing.

This is really cool guys. The thing that I take away is that Tom hears a sound in his head, and he makes that sound with his hands. He gave instructions to the man with the controls, but at the end of the day, Tom was just getting his "signature" overdriven tone. He's getting the sound(s) in his head to come out of the PR speaker. I'm no authority, but I've found and strongly believe that guitarists hear a sound in their head, and through different guitars, amps, effects or setting, we all tend to dial in a particular tone that we hear in our head. I definitely do. I'll offer Dickey Betts playing a Strat and sounding just like he does on a LP. That one blew me away. Dickey on a Strat sounds just like Dickey on a LP. I also believe that Steve Vai has referred a story from Frank that "the guitar tone is in your head." I agree. I wish all you guitar folks out there to have a wonderful time next time you pick up your favorite instrument!

Interesting thing - I grabbed myself one of those Nobels pedals. I realize there are differences between them but the word is generally that they're fairly similar and consistent. And it just simply didn't work for my setup. On a different guitar, different amp, and different player the results would be completely different. Gear videos are a lot of fun, but they only demonstrate context, not a rigid collection of "good" and "bad" gear. Sometimes you just have to do some good old fashioned trial and error.

I had a silver Nobels ODR-1 from the 2000's and then suffered through a house fire and lost many things including that pedal. I was extremely dissapointed sad to see how outrageous the things are pricing. I just want my pedal back.

No one is doing this type of video with the range of quick comparison with high quality playing and range of pedals! It’s like Homeschoolers are entering a master class!

They all sound good. Some I did prefer for the clarity of notes and some had wild artifacts. Funny to see Tom's face... he's no poker face at all. What a player he is. Love Larry...

I never understand why people do blind tests AND mix up the pedal order instead of just going left to right. Lee Anderton does it and confuses himself almost everyone. Fun video will tho!

They’z a Party goin’ on, right here…. And super helpful. For lotsa reasons. Rock on, Teach 🤙🤙 Your switcher guy is great. Obviously knows his stuff and east going. His point on the Nobels shootout about how tiny adjustments make a Big difference, and we do mean tiny, make a big difference on the Mini.

Dearest Uncle Larry: I was just alerted to the existence of PLEXI SOUL, and I'm geeked that you did something with the "Just Cream" chord changes! That's my favorite thing you've done as part of the Hoomeskoolin' intro/topic of conversation. Really gorgeous addition to what I think of as the "dark ABBEY ROAD" canon. I don't know if you're an Elliott Smith fan, but he might be the all-time greatest at transforming Beatles devotion into something midnight-black.
