Every time I see "analog man" I think of Joe Walsh. LOL I have a good friend who is newer to guitar, and he started liking the modeling amp things. When he comes over, I always get out a tube amp. Like a cab with Celestion Blues in it. The difference is like playing through a "radio", and playing through a real amp! The analog thing loses so much, low, mid and high. Side by side it just sounds hollow. Maybe its just me.... 8-/ --gary

I kinda thought at my age, 70, that I had pretty much quit learning new stuff and to be content with what I already know. But I swear, Homeskoolin' has been a real blessing for me, I learn something from every episode. Today's lesson is one of the best, thanks Tom for everything.......

I agree, Scott. At age 67 I'm really just a solid intermediate, having taken it up in 2009, but I have drawn so much knowledge from Tom and his approach to this channel. Sure, much has been above my skill level, but at least I try and gain something by doing so. I have been here from way back, in the Corona Lessons day. I never miss one.

THANK YOU for giving recognition to this amazing song! James Honeyman-Scott was just brilliant. Those first 2 Pretenders albums continue to mean more and more to me, 40+ years on. The 10 note solo in 'Birds of Paradise" can bring tears to my eyes. Thanks for all you do, Tom. The 'Plexi Soul' CD is getting plenty of play in my car here in Hawaii.

I was lucky and grew up in the perfect time to see so many great shows. I saw the Pretenders early on in a small theater in NYC and was in the second row and caught one of Martin Chambers drumsticks he sent flying into the audience 😳. First concert was Terry Reid. Ike and Tina Turner. BB. KING and The Rolling Stones in 1969 at Madison Square Garden in 1969. Get yer Ya Ya's Out. Memories are precious 💖 keep making new ones. Thx Tom

Love the channel Uncle Larry. I just picked up your autographed CD+TShirt! Speaking of old school "listening and learning tricks", my favorite was turning the turntable down to 16 rpm, then tuning up a half step. It worked pretty well, though it made Geddy Lee sound like Leonard Cohen.

Tom, Your explanation of "everybody being a little out of tune is ok" was spot on. Along with MANY others, It's the Stones sound in a nutshell, like 8th grade band, but with guitars. For all of us who are OCD about intonation, the guitar ( as sweet as it is ) can be a mighty cruel joke sometimes. Thanks for your generosity Tom, your playing and perspectives are wonderful, but your musicality is BEYOND all that, and an absolute JOY to hear!

Managed to miss this one, Jame Honeyman Scott what an absolutely gorgeous playing style he had! So nice to have you go through Kid and point out the fine points of the Pretenders songwriting craft. Always love me some add9's! I always loved playing "Brass in Pocket", that is another magical chordal textures tune, Mystery Achievement was quite the badass rocker too, Hell there are too many to name. Your concept on "modeling being looked on in the future like acid-washed jeans"THAT was killer-ha! So you had the opportunity to buy Honeyman-Scotts Les Paul? Oooh man, I'd think that would have some melodic mojo. Continue to carry on--your vids are like gold! Thanks Uncle Larry! PS-caught that short vid of the vibrating football game--I stand corrected, the players actually DO go the right way at times-nice run up the gut for the long gain. Too bad he had to fall down. Too many GOOD vibrations...

James H Scott and Chrissie were perfect together. 1979-1983 was may favorite period, so much great new stuff. So lucky I got to see it all live. Talking Heads, B52s, Elvis Costello, Pretenders, Dead Kennedys, Public Image, R.E.M., Gang of Four, X, Iggy Pop, Dire Straits, a Zappa high point, Smiths emerging, and 20 others I can't recall offhand.

What an immediately recognizable song! Kid!! Thanks UL, fun video. From one of Ohio's best, Ms. Hynde and her group. James was a great player. I agree with you on the masses losing the knowledge of how an amp sounds. I'm as guilty as anyone. I've only got two amps, one is a SS Fender Princeton Chorus. Good amp, but it is always played clean.

Thanks Uncle Larry, love this tune breakdown. Your insights help us to revisit some of the interesting musical ideas being done then. There is a lot that can be learned for music today. And you are hitting at something pretty worrisome. With all the cool gear out there, are we forgetting to just plug straight into an amp and learn how to make it sing. And lastly, with you on loving those imperfections in things like Gilmore's solo...none of us are without imperfections, maybe that is what makes us each so unique...i just wish god would lend me your ear now and then.

James Honeyman-Scott evidently a big influence on Johnny Marr - btw Uncle Larry, talking about the 80's - do you dig Roland JC120's or side with the "they're crap" camp? I think if you can work them, especially wet/dry with a tube amp, they sound fantastic (e.g. Andy Summers/Jeff Buckley etc)....its a bit like all gear in the right hands, really...

Tom: Great show, as usual. Instructive and entertaining. Regarding James Honeyman-Scott, I read Chrissie Hynde's memoir a while back. Not surprisingly, JHS figures into her story prominently, how his guitar style changed things and put the band on a different trajectory. But what's really sweet is that she comes back to him at the end of the book, specifically calling out his central role in her music. Nice touch.

Definitely agree with the modelers statement!!! I fought for years with them trying to milk a passable facsimile of any decent sounding amp. Never worked.
