Hey Tom, more on the "power of the mediocre guitar channels". Your riffs and ideas set us off on an inspired journey, they (other channels) take you to a place we have seen 1,000 times. People like you give us CONCEPTS to be interpreted and fit into our own styles. The other type of channel spoon-feeds DO THIS EXACT THING type riffs. As you said, both have their place.

16:00 it's also an algorithm thing, specifically for KZbin. It rewards entertainers and people who cater to it, and it's incredibly difficult to build a channel otherwise. Which just goes to show how amazing Tom is at what he does- he's so frickin good that he doesn't even need the algorithm to be one of really popular music channels on here.

Ive been playing almost 40 years now…I was that ‘bar band’ guitarist for many years in my youth… These days I play for fun, do some cover band stuff, some sit-ins for local studios. Im not 1/10th the player that Uncle Larry is… Never have been, never will be… But I have also NEVER once been ‘ok’ with my skill/ability on guitar… The day I am I’ll quit. I can always be better, always learn more, always try something new. I’m just as in love with and interested in figuring out these slabs of wood and strings today, as I was when l l picked up my first guitar at 10 years old. I watch Larry bc he inspires me, he makes me a better player and he’s funny as hell.

I love watching masters of their craft…and feel lucky to be able to understand it, distill it, and pass it on to others. I don’t know where I fall on the spectrum (I would say lifelong searcher/student), but I’m super grateful that the universe sent a guitar my way, as a kid. Such a perfect explaination of why people don't want to 'go all the way' in committing to something... I fell in love with horses at age 33, and drove myself to learn everything I could about riding, maintenance, care, health, diet, training, etc. Most people just don't want or can't afford the commitment to becoming a 'master' of something. It takes a special desire. It's why I love this channel. I did take on a few clients to 'train' their horses, which was a joke. The horses weren't the ones who needed the training; they rise to the best player in the room, or they sink to the lowest common denominator. Needless to say, I quit training horses for other people, because they had no interest in learning for themselves what it takes to excel. Luv ya, Tommy!

Thank you for the channel, it’s really an honor to watch. I've been playing for 40+ years, can replicate Eruption in a bar band and get a ton of applause. Can dive bomb, squeal, tap and entertain all night long, but when I improvise I'm out of ideas fairly quickly. In other words a great imitator, a shit innovator. Hell, I even went to GIT back in the 80's! But then I started watching, Jack Ruch, Corey Congilio and you. And I'm really understanding how important arpeggios and chord tones are over flying through Dorian and Mixolydian runs. Just focusing on those have change my world. I feel like I'm developing a voice, not mature yet, but I'm hearing things in my playing that I've been wanting for 30 years. I need to get down to Nashville to find you guys and watch up close. You're all very inspiring! Oh and I'm from Steeler country. Grew up hating the Browns... then that weekend happened and A.M. become pubic enemy number one down here. That was BS and I'm still pissed at him. I respect the Browns now, because you can't do that to family!

What I have found about acoustic guitars is that it is possible to make it personal and special. Just buy a good one and play it for a few decades. Easy. Like a good quality baseball glove, an acoustic guitar 'wears in' as you play it. Maybe you don't ever make the big leagues, but that glove fits your hand like it does for no other. If you like playing ball, that's the glove for you. These electric guitfiddles are more stubborn. I am working on it, thanks to Home Skoolin'

Larry, you’re totally right. I think the reason is that as creatures, we are instinctively drawn to seek comfort. Therefore we stop at good enough. To really reach the top, in anything (sports, business, music) you have to spend the majority of your time outside your comfort zone, and you have to train yourself to seek that discomfort. If you want to be the best pub cover band guitarist in your town, the amount of time you have to spend outside your comfort zone is a lot less than if you want to be a session player in Nashville. Also, the reason those rudimentary guitar channels are popular is that they spend more time on production and marketing, while the serious cats are too busy practicing guitar… and there’s nothing wrong with that, like you said.

I’m definitely a lifer and when I was younger I could pick up a guitar and after a hr was done with everything I knew. Now at 51 I’ve become what I wish I was when I was younger, but with raising a family and the bread winner it was hard to do more. A lil over 15 yrs ago I decided to go all in and always can “create” something new and anything I want to play can figure it out easily. I’m not bragging, I always say I play a little guitar but my point is anyone can do it if they put the time into it. And I’m just so thankful and blessed to have pushed myself to do it.

If it was you, which I believe it was, you were tearing up a Hendrix tune! The Hot guitarist at that time was young Frankie Starr from the west side of Cleveland, a child prodigy that was playing in bars at 13 years old….! It was great to see (2) young Cleveland guitarists that were blazing….! As always thanks for the musical interludes as the day rolls half way to tomorrow…

I think your assessment of player ability is spot on. I live in an area with a lot of cool guitar players. They are all really sweet people but are content playing cowboy chords. I’ve been playing for 45 years and have a decent vocabulary. I’m not a great player by any stretch of the imagination just a bit more in depth. But I always seem to be the odd man out in my group of players. I sense they feel more comfortable with other cowboy chord players.

Tom Yet another incredible playing Adventure!! ThankYou Mate! And as for Teaching vs. Playing: The Rule is… Those who play…. PLAY & Those who don’t… TEACH 😵 Cheers! 👍👍👍 PS: I alway was amazed by Clarence Gatemouth Brown who never took a Lesson in his life. He was totally self taught Clarence even tuned his guitar to his own type of tuning because that is all he knew!!! Completely Amazing Cat with an amazing Musical History ! An inspiration to all of us out here who are self-taught and never took a lesson…. Where eventually all your bad habits become your very own personal style!!! PeaceOut Brother !

Comment about motivation. I have a very good friend, couple years older than me, who is coasting as a guitar player. It drives me nuts. He doesn't challenge himself to learn new voicings, new chords, new songs. He really is talented and could go much further with his playing. It doesn't make me feel better about myself or my playing, but I am obsessed with guitar. I am still a rookie after 40 years. But I won't stop trying and learning. Oh, and a comment about the strat. My goodness, does that guitar stay in tune, no matter what you throw at it. Stark contrast to my guitars. Great sound out of that '62.

Hey Tom I have a suggestion for one of your awesome Gruhns round table videos you do. So like your video you did with the pedals can you do it with guitars, blind fold test and play a original black guard Tele, and modern day tele that has the same feel and do it with all the great guitars you love Strat,Burst,335,. It would be interesting to see if you could tell a difference. Keep up the awesome work your doing with your awesome videos, they are a lot of fun to watch, I especially like your talks at your session breaks, your field trip videos to Glasers and all the other great places you taken the to and the Gruhns round tables are a class of there own.

Good truths. And the low voicings are worth exploring. Like playing a B7 with F# in the bass…

I just got rid of my ‘68 SG Special because it just never got played. Cool guitar but I just wasn’t drawn to it. Turned it into a gold top Les Paul that I can’t put down. Great episode…but all your episodes are great.

Hey Tom, I spent this last weekend in Nashville and it was pretty cool seeing some of the places you talk about in person. I had a wonderful conversation with Greg Voros which brings up a random question- coffee or beer if you HAD to choose just one?

Uncle Larry, an old hacker like myself might not get much inspiration looking at others of like ability on the internet. Your playing inspires me, and that - along with the fact that it just sounds so good - is what I come here for. Like drinking from a firehose lots of times? For sure. And thanks to yourself and Joe Glaser, the Savvy bridge brought my recent Les Paul Special from what I thought was 'pretty darn close' to Dead Nuts On!

Loved that jam!! Your guitar sounds awesome…looks similar to my strat (‘82 Fullerton re-issue of that exact guitar) except yours sounds in tune up and down the fret board. Dammit!
