The fact a song like ‘Radar Love’ still sounds so vibrant and alive today, it amazes me there aren’t young players out there aspiring to make that type of music again. ‘Jackie Blue’ is another one of those songs, a great guitar record that never gets old.

Hey Tom, thanks for stating what you did about not wanting to replace your playing with the playing of an idol. At age 66, I consider myself a good guitar player, having played since I was 13. I’ve been active, playing semi-professionally all my life. I certainly continue to grow as a musician constantly, but man… I hear so many stellar players, you included, and often lament,”I suck, wish I could play like that guy”! Your take on it today was very encouraging and made me think, I make good music, and there are many folks who wish they could do what I do. That, of course, is not the goal…to be better than anybody, but to be viable as a musician. Thanks for your encouragement! Really dig the show!😊

Your solo album and the Trip The Witch album are two of the finest instrumental albums that I have ever heard. To me, melodic playing with feel is more impressive than just shredding. I played and sang with the Golden Earring’s lead singer three weeks ago at a gig here in Holland. We played the Earrings greatest hits. Their guitarist is suffering from ALS so they stopped playing as a band a few years ago. So sad. Radar Love was the encore of the show and we were realizing how big of a hit this song still is and so recognizable all over the world. The dude still rocks. Dutch rock ‘n roll legacy. Check out Long Blond Animal in case you don’t know that song. Killer riff.

Talking about playing the music you love... last year I was on a guitar camp with the brilliant Rob Harris, just living and breathing guitar for a week. One morning I was playing with headphones on some Hendrix-y noodling and I suddenly realised I was making the sounds that I wished for all those years ago when I started playing as a teenager. I just thought, that's enough, that's really all I ever wanted. It actually made me cry, which took me by surprise. I keep thinking back to that moment, it seems important.

Still have an embedded memory of watching a cover band playing radar love outside as a 12 yo kid in 1975, fascinated with the dude ripping up the solo and guitar riffs. Had to go back home and try and figure it out for myself the old fashioned way. Needle up back to the start, try and play it…repeat. No KZbin, just ears and figuring stuff out. Probably like many self taught 70s guitar players, in my room with my favorite rock records trying to figure them out! Thanks Tom for keeping the old guys (and young ones!)inspired to keep playing. Always inspired to keep learning new things, and inching my way off the plateau up the mountain of guitar playing. Been listening since the start back in the garage…keep it rolling. Thanks again -

You are absolutely right about the in ears ruining playing to the room. I have been off monitors all together for a couple years and I just do the old trick where if I want more of something I take a step towards that instrument. Also removes the inevitable situation where the sound engineer and I have to fight each other to the death mid soundcheck.

Ahhhhh!!!!! The Relayer album by Yes and Selling England by the Pound are in my top 5 greatest albums. I'll never forget, when I was 18, a friend sat me down in his apartment and had me listen to the Relayer album. My jaw was on the floor the whole time. It was a moment I realized that music could be something that I had never imagined. Afterwards, I would go to a music store in Wolcott, CT called Pheonix Records once a month and buy as many cds as I could from one band at a time. Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP, King Crimson, Rush, Jeff Beck Group, etc. There's something special about that age of discovery.

LOTS of Friday evenings as a kid by their side listening to every single Genesis record while they both talked shop. Steve toured with a tribute band from Argentina called the Genetics and played the whole set from Seconds Out, so it was a very balanced meal.
