LIke many others I found my way here via a KZbin recommendation on my home page and have been hooked on Home Skoolin' ever since ... I have learned more about guitar and playing from you in your videos than I have in some time ... it's like going to 6 string university. It doesn't hurt that you a down to earth, immediately likable personality. I have recently re-watched all your videos and summarized key points ... I came up with this ... 1 Scales - don't play patterns --- hum something and find it on the guitar 2) Phrasing - born with it .. others can work at it .. 3) Vibrato .. important and must be intentional 4) Speed - picking hand - wrist moving in swinging motion 5) Practice - learn old songs .. try to sound exactly like the source .. the feel .. work on things that keep hands working together .. guitar is a planar instrument .. know the notes on the fretboard .. rehearse past perfection ... play with your eyes closed ... keep practice musical .. practice what you don't know ... muting is an effect to learn ... the harder you work, the luckier you get ... play melodies ... 6) Harmony - know your 3rds, 4ths, 5ths and 6ths - you have to know the notes on the neck 7) Touch - play a note multiple different ways ...amp turned up .. light touch .. every riff has a 100 gears ... watch fretting pressure ... fret accurately .. this is ultimately going to give you 'your sound' ... dynamics and touch are key ... 8) Time - street theory - you need to be able to find a chord all over the neck .. know your chord formulae and notes on the neck. 9) Groove - restraints is the key .. .find a groove and stay on it .. only deviate for a damn good reason 10) Gear - over emphasized - focus on making you gear work .. don't chase gear ... go to 5) above ... try to find and replicate a guitar sound you like on a recording ... 11) Ear - don't use systems .. use your ear .. take any note and weave notes across the neck .. explore below the note ... play the same riff all over the neck ... know the fretboard 12) The Song - guitar playing serves the song ... frame the song, harmonically and lyrically with the right rhythm and note choices 13) Listening - listen to nutrient rich music ... start with The Beatles ... 14) Mindset - don't rush .. play with confidence .. like you have been there before .. know the fretboard .. this where confidence comes from ...channel your emotions into your playing ... 15) Playing - keep it simple .. home is not the club or the stage .. reverb and delay are pointless .. focus on the mids ... use your guitar tone controls to your advantage ... 16) Your Guitar - needs constant maintenance ... intonation, nut, bridge .. stay on it ... They probably could be grouped better and I probably will do that. I have started practicing 4 hours a day using this a guide. I am just going to see where it takes me. The most often piece of advice you have given is 'know the notes on the guitar' so that is forming a large part of what I am doing right now .. chord formulae to follow in short order. Hey Tom .. many thanks for just being you and doing it on KZbin. All the best and long may you run on here .. the smear is where it's at!! Phil

I think the trick is - and Tom has talked about this before, is that he really knows the fretboard inside out. So whilst there is a lot of licks, it really is just whatever he hears, he plays.
This whole time I've been wondering how a guy who is so rock has made a career as a Nashville studio musician. And then you went and got all twangy today... without even busting out a Tele. Good stuff brother.

Gotta say Tom. From day one of Homeskoolin you were playing mind blowing stuff. But in my humble opinion these past few days of sessions with the other players, has put even more of a spark in your playing. The excitement and inspiration of playing with those other killer pros is coming through man. After a long time of playing alone it must feel extra special to kick the creative juices in gear with those other great players. And since you said you are enjoying the artist and the gang, it's a cool way to get back to it. It shows in the Homeskoolin episodes. I didn't think it could get better. But you're playing with even more attitude and spunk. I couldn't be happier for you.

3 min loop played in a garage, one take, no preparation,a phone recording, 2 chords, yet I have listened to this intro /loop 30 times.(my favorite was the intro of "plexi soul " episode ). Not one extra note, not one wrong note. How you transform once the music begins is amazing. Only a man with a big heart and pure soul can pull the strings of your soul and guitar which flips a spark in my soul and everyone else who listens to it as well as your other playing. Bends, dynamic, timing, spirit and feel you play with is in a way proves to me you are a great person blessed with talent to match and not merely a great player who's a good guy as well. Ps your guitar face (we all got one) resembles the jokers smile in the (older ) batman movies. Pps that's a compliment!

Tom, when you’re carving up the fret board, are the names of all the notes flowing through your mind unconsciously? This just tied for first on my "Favorite Home Skoolin' Intro Jams" list. Here is one of the many reasons I love this show, Tom turns my old licks into new ones. I've been doing that E6 steel lick for years but I never thought to include open strings, same thing with that pedaling the b string thing he was doing a few weeks ago, gave me a whole new option. That's happened to me about a half dozen times from these videos. This series has taught me that I'm too stubborn and set in in my ways sometimes and that instead of "going for it" sometimes I should be going for it all the time.
@Pete1031704 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom, another good one , thank you! That was my favorite intro music of all the episodes so far. I'm no artist, but for your next round of merch, I'm thinking that your ladder in the background should be incorporated as well as a caricature of you playing your Strat and have one side of your caricature's head flattened to match your Strat's headstock. To make it a limited special edition run goes without saying. If you need any more good ideas, I've got a ton.

Mixed feeling isn´t it. Totally inspired, flabbergasted, happy to watch ^a brother in arms" doin' so well, knowing some of the effort that has gone into it. And then a tad blue cause its so stellar, and I'm almost stunned into silence .. Well, its making me play more guitar and "guitar-porn surfing less ..." a lot more. Rethinking my pedalboard too .. much more tailored to what I personlly want to express, and to making better use of what Ive got .. Inspiration, very distilled q. And talking to my kids more ... I mean just that ... Im genuinely in awe. Thanks Tom for sharing, you honed in on the very reason I' m still playing the guitar and what not ... Because .. Its a labour of love. (Tom) You´re asking a lot of questions in your videos .. Bottom line; there´s an honor duty to play more wisely and take some of it up, with all the advice you´ve given. Not a heavy thing, though.
