Homesteading on Small Acreage - Benefits & Challenges

We have our homestead on just five acres. Been here since 1981 and we love it. We grow all our own meat, most of our veggies (I can a LOT), our own eggs. The only thing we don't have is a milk cow. We love to travel in the summers particularly (we have an RV and we also have a son who lives close by and takes care of our animals and garden). I love our life and wouldn't have it any other way. I have fed our family form our garden since we had kids. (that was 1971). We are retired now, but still love doing what we are doing. I am expanding my garden this year adding medicinal herbs. Have had them here and there on the property, but want to consolidate a lot of things. So thankful to be able to eat healthy and have the peace of mind that we don't have to go to the store very often for anything at all,

What we did was start with five acres so we built most of the infrastructure close to the house. We purchased more acreage adjacent over time And created pasture so we have grazing in a wrapped design that allows accessibility. To go to the extremes of the land we can walk, but a UTV is a help.

Very encouraging. We have some acreage, but I can wrap my head around homesteading on fewer acres. The overwhelm at even just the idea of doing more... no thanks! So I appreciate this!!

Hello! I just somehow came across your KZbin channel and subscribed. We are a family of 12 (currently only 9 at home lol) but we are "only" on 5 acres. 3.5 being pasture/farmland and we are always wishing we had more. I'm looking forward to checking out your channel and learning how we can better manage our space. We currently have ND goats and just bought 3 Jacob sheep that we'll be picking up soon. And of course chickens, couple cats, and a couple dogs.

I’m also on 5 acres and we have about 3 of that just as pasture for the cows! You are so right about efficiency! You are forced to use what you have well.

So funny to me as an English person to see someone talk about 5 acres being small. I hope to one day have maybe half an acre! This was a really interesting discussion

It’s relatively speaking, as a farmer, smaller. It’s still a lot of property.
