We have 2 feet of snow in the forecast and I'm down bigtime with the flu, so my teenage son is tasked with everything from gassing up vehicles and the snowblower to firewood duty. Thankfully, the food we grew, foraged, and preserved took one major worry out of the equation! This is why we prepare!

Your comment reminds me of the meme where the guy in the wheel chair looks out the window and says he's jealous of the man walking. The man walking says he's jealous of the man on the bike. The man on the bike is jealous of the man that can drive... We are all in different places in our lives but that doesn't mean other's blessings can't be celebrated. There’s plenty of people to watch who don’t freeze dry so you can find other options but I wish she could’ve mentioned, as she clearly had other methods of preserving those items for the many years before she got the freeze dryer! Having a pantry like this saves so much time and hassle. All five of us just went through Covid. During that first week, I was so grateful that we could just pull cans of the shelves for dinner and lunch. Lots of chicken soup with turmeric that way, stews, more soup and elderberry juice from the freezer, was made into toddy’s. We are only 5, but we do the same thing you do. It saves time and money, and you know that what you serve is good and healthy. We also have food allergies, so access to safe foods is amazing. I really wish I had access to cold storage like you have, but it’s too hot here in the south. Instead I have an extra refrigerator, which doesn’t give me a lot of free space, but still works. I do have one advantage you don’t. We can and do grow vegetables year round, since the temperatures rarely goes below the mid 30’s. The only fruit we have access to all years round, is orange though, but it is a privilege always having access to oranges. This weekend they are promising 80F, so I will be lucky if my plants don’t bolt, but I covered them up so hopefully they won’t. Anyway. That’s for another great video.

Great video. My pantry is basically a closet with 3 shelves. It is maxed out. We have a basement but it is damp. Several years ago we tried to store potatoes - they did not last long. This was a bad year in gardening for us due to critters. I guess they are really hungry. Deer have never jumped the fence before. Even they chewed the potato plants down which we never had that issue before. I was working longer hours and my cousin came down with lymes disease which he was having a hard time getting around. Definitely got to work on new fencing plus more around the property if we want to grow anything. I grow all my herbs in pots and then dyhrate them. When I open up the jar of herbs to use, the smell is awesome. I did some foraging as well. If things go better next year, I plan to slow down at work and focus more of foraging, growing more vegetables (I already have alot of my seeds for next year), growing more herbs, berries, etc.

Great to see all the different methods of preserving and types of food. One method I use a lot is cooking ground beef on a cast iron pan, saving the rendered tallow in jars, and then dehydrating the meat inn the oven. Its let me avoid having to buy an extra 3 freezers, and the tast/texture is @ 95% as good as the ground beef in say a Mt House meal, so if you can't afford a freeze drier, look into it. I have meat thats over 1.5 yr old still like the day it was made all you need is a ziploc bag to store it, but of course you could use jars, mylar bags etc.

I hadn't sampled most figuring if I ever really needed them I wouldn't be too picky - I was wrong. One thing I found that I absolutely loved was the tomatoes powder. It is absolutely fantastic to use whenever I need tomato sauce, paste, soup base or éven to make things like ketchup or bbq sauce. It can replace a lot of canned tomato products and still have great flavor. Very impressed with your wonderful pantry. The vibrant organized colors make me think of stain glass windows. Great video. Love you are trying different areas to find new food storage. Back in 2011 we moved our house on to a big plot of land. Our house is a old country church with a 8x8 bell tower. When we moved the house we put a full basement under it. The bell tower basement became our cold room. It has turned out excellent. Although there is a concrete floor, I am managing to keep apples carrots beets and spuds for a three or so months. Not perfect but good enough for the two of us. In a few years we are hoping to move across the road into a smaller place. But with a bigger root cellar. Even though I am mid 60s we still can upwards of 400 jars a year, we still hunt for moose and deer and can a lot of thst too. Since our power is pretty sketchy here. Sorry this is getting long winded. But it doesn’t matter your age or how many u are feeding…it’s a great practise to keep extra food on hand. We only go to town every two months and we do just fine. Thank you so much for your great channel. 🇨🇦💕
