Excellent video! I started my pantry with 5 cans a week. I found this to be very doable and not overwhelming. I also started canning again, because it became important to me to know what was in my food. Trying to live more the way my grandmother did. She lived through the depression and both world wars. She was a very wise woman and there is learning in how our grandparents survived those times. I believe we have lost some of this, so I am thankful you are sharing. God bless you and your beautiful family.

Tomato paste, tomato sauce, canned tomatoes; rice, pasta, dried beans, canned beans. Canned veg, canned fruit, dried veg, instant potatoes. Oats, peanut butter. Baking supplies: Flour, sugar, yeast, baking powder, baking soda, vanilla, flax or chia seeds to make eggs. Oil. Basic spices and salt and pepper. Onion and garlic powder. Dry vegetable broth. Mac and cheese, canned fish or meat if you eat those. Dry milk or plant milk. These are the basics in my opinion. If you can stand beans get some because they are the cheapest thing and they are full of protein and nutrition. Even if you don't love them but could eat them in an emergency, get some. In an emergency you will like them and they're cheap and store well. I would stay away from things that need to be frozen or refrigerated since you may not have electricity. And have some manual can openers and lots of water. Also pet food and cat litter. Toilet paper. Be sure to check the "best by" dates and donate food if you are not going to use it up by then. Be sure to rotate your food and eat the oldest first.

Re pet food, I keep a few boxes of The Honest Kitchen’s freeze dries food on hand. One box equals 40 pounds of food. Just have to mix with water so be sure to have that on hand. But I like knowing that it will last for many years in the pantry.

I've always kept a good pantry due to living in the countryside for the first 36 years of our married life. We didn't have regular buses and every year we would get snowed in for a minimum or 2 - 3 days a time during winter. I've always cooked from scratch when first married as it saved us money. When we moved into town to live closer to our granddaughter and family, as I took care of her from 5 months old (now 13), I allowed my pantry to reduce with being close to shops. Big mistake. Covid hit and I ran out of milk and flour, this will not happen again. I started canning, dehydrating and even milling my own flour. Not exactly popular in the UK as it is in US but I think more people are waking up to what will be needed in the future. We started renting an allotment in early 2019 and this has really helped with the canning of home grown veggies. Now I love having my pantry back, which due to downsizing our home with the move, has taken over two rooms in the house and is my in home shop. Great video and wonderful advice.

I'm so glad my family loves rice and beans because that's the easiest thing for me to stock up on! I have extremely limited space, and we are a week out (if baby waits that long, lol) from being a family of 5 in a very small 2 bedroom apartment. This new baby was a surprise, and we are excited to meet her, but it's definitely made making space for any size pantry really hard.

When I first started stocking up in 2020 I was living in an apartment and just did what I could in that space. I made mistakes ie I bought bulk of things we don’t eat a lot of 😂. I did the storing heaps of beans too 🤦♀️ but now I am better at storing what we eat and we have a great well stocked healthy pantry. It makes me so happy to have an amazing array of beautiful whole foods that we eat. I learned to can and I even bought a Freezedryer last year. I live in Australia and it’s been great to adapt what I learn from amazing YouTibers like yourself to our climate and lifestyle here.

This was a great video, Kelsey. So full of info. If i can add one thing that is basically free to stock up. When i cook, I save all the veggie peels and scraps and throw them in a ziplock in the freezer. I also do the same with chicken or beef bones. Kept in separate ziplock bags in the freezer. When i have full bags, I throw the bones and veggies in a pot and make stock. I do roast off the beef bones first but not the chicken. So, with scraps and water, you can make super healthy bone broth. For FREE. Simmered for 48 hours, strain and either freeze it or pressure can. I feel like you can not have too much broth put up.

This is a great video and truly informative. Preparedness is a way of life I feel everyone should consider especially with the weather patterns, grocery prices rising, etc. I do not have a pantry area that is large enough to stock up on emergency goods, but I took a large closet in my office (it was a bedroom) and made a makeshift pantry that holds long term storage foods in bulk like Augason Farms as well as things I know I might need in an emergency - batteries, candles, flashlights, first aid kit, etc. My extended family made fun of this but I don't care because I like the feeling of being prepared and knowing should something happen I will have what my family needs and we can sustain ourselves. The best way to do this I feel is start smart buying things you know you can store gradually instead of trying to buy all at once. If you buy one thing a pay period to put up in your pantry or find a good sale to stock up on something, it doesn't seem to overwhelming than if you are trying to stock up all at once.

I feel this is very important information. I am just starting to can. I usually can meals in a jar, because I am the cook. I have recently had a medical issue with my back. So, asking my husband to warm up a jar works. I have always had food in my kitchen to feed my family for a least a month. When learning about canning I saw the need for having a long-term pantry and I am not working on it. Thanks for the ideas.
@Mel-vu9ssАй бұрын
I felt led in 2008 to begin having a working pantry to feed my family. I’ve been functioning this way ever since. When 2020 hit we had no needs and were able to just function as normal. We are now retired and so thankful I’ve had this mindset. We add as much as we can from our garden the rest is added in like you’ve said with sales or bulk purchases. It has helped so much with the rising inflation we now see. I think your series is a wise thing to be doing and I pray people will watch and listen rather than skip and wait until regular content. There’s nothing regular about our world right now. The final quote is ❤.

This is an awesome video to learn from for people to get prepared. We live in very uncertain times, and having food to fall back on is a great asset to have. Also I'd mention first aid supplies for anyone getting prepared for whatever might come your way. There will come a time where you'll have to be your own doctor. Also, lastly, but very important is to have passports for all the members of your family. I know you're a praying person, which is amazing, so pray for guidance on that. But for everyone, I cant stress enough the importance of being able to cross borders if necessary, and to have the correct documentation is vital, your life could depend on it. We are going into very tumultuous times, and I hope everyone will be as prepared as possible. I know its hard to think about storms, war, etc which will make us leave our homes, but some will have to. Preparation for all scenarios is key.🙏💖🙏

Thanks for the tips Kelsey! I have those classic problems with my own stores about storing things we don’t eat regularly that I’m trying to curb. I feel like my pantry would be summed up in an express lane checkout if I stuck to the things we eat all the time because we get into horrible meal ruts, but at the same time that’s probably an easier task to just clear out the wasteful stores that we don’t need and double down on those we do. Thankfully mine’s already been tested with Covid and come out on top but it could definitely be better and more efficient.

This was very good. I started a working pantry in 2020. I quickly learned as you spoke about to only buy what we will eat. I was so concerned that I bought things we didn’t eat under normal circumstances. I then switched my thinking and began stocking up on what we would eat and bulk buying. I have a small pantry that’s in our kitchen, no spare room, basement or root cellar so I have had to get creative but it works. One of the biggest perks to keep a stocked pantry, freezers and such is it makes so easy to cook or bake. You aren’t having to go buy ingredients to make something. Even if you aren’t sure what to make I know I have what I need to make a number of things. It takes the stress out of meal planning and preparation.

My daughter is lactose intolerant, so I've naturally learned a bit about what she can eat. From what I understand, lactose-intolerant people can have powdered milk because the process by which it is made removes the lactose. Butter, yogurt, and cheese also contain less lactose than fresh milk. Best wishes, and thanks for sharing what you know about food preservation. I noticed two things in the video you may want to know about. Salt will draw moisture from the air, so it's best to keep it covered in an air-tight container. I buy Redmond Real Salt also, and the buckets come sealed with wax. You probably know that it's best not to stack canned food. If a seal fails in cooler weather, and then reseals in the heat, you wouldn't know. I know space is an issue, but you can usually find cheap racks to elevate jars without putting pressure on the jars below at a dollar store.

So regarding your pantry, seeing the thumbnail screenshot: what would happen if the racks start shaking? think earthquake (maybe you don't have them (often), but what happens when they do?) or storm comes through. Will all those glass jars fall off the shelves???? Is it ready for 'anything'? 🤔 Perhaps put up something in front of the jars, so they cannot accidentally fall of (bungee cord being a simple fix?)
