What a terrific, well designed and executed presentation. 30+ years ago we established our household in a sub- suburban community with bridal paths instead of sidewalks, minimum 1.5 acre lots, trees and a few old farms and orchards. We planted an orchard on 30’ centers for nuts, apples, pears, peaches, berries and grapes. The existing chickens, goats and horses were grandfathered in as local laws forbid new animals. Cul-de-sac neighborhoods with sidewalks have appeared and we were forced to abandon our wells and septic systems to connect to city water and sewer systems. Us old-timers still compost twigs, clippings and leaves while we are now being assessed a monthly fee for these things to be collected as trash! It’s time to move again. @@homesteadonomics To teach my kids and friends basic survival skills we used to host a cookout every year on Ground Hog day. Here in NE Ohio February usually features snow. I would build a one match or flint & steel fire and cook an entire meal outdoors. It was a snow or shine event. Using a cast iron kettle we would cook “ground hog” stew... a vegetable stew that a ground hog might enjoy. In the late 90’s when the NE USA was without power, cooking became a 5-day picnic. Our family and close neighbors enjoyed happy meals together.

We just picked up 6 more chicks this spring! I had to make a portable chicken tractor for them since they couldn't go with the rest of the flock easily. We have 9 now and have absolutely loved having backyard chickens! Definitely a gateway drug LOL

I got chickens a year ago. They're so much fun... and it's so cool to hatch them and take care of them when they're babies. I suggest everyone have some, if you have a little space. They're so low maintenance and also entertaining and fun.

Great video, interestingly, I watched it the morning after I have decided to tackle finishing up a home interior paint/reno job that I had hired someone to do for me, 3/4 of the way done and they have disappeared…so now I i’m going to finish it. I have never painted before, but I am tackling it and painted my closet first to get my feet wet so to speak. today I am painting my bathroom and tomorrow I am painting my bedroom in addition to removing baseboards, etc., I am a 64-year-old widow, and I have been wanting to learn to do a lot of things around my house and little 1/2 acre homestead…this video was helpful. I do have chickens but I had bought a premade coop from Tractor Supply. It’s working well for now, but in the long run, I will have to buildsomething. I also need to set up a rainwater collection system. My house does not have gutters so I guess after I get the inside finished, I will learn how to put gutters up, I am very tired of hiring people that don’t want to do the work correctly or finish through…! Thank you for this video, I learn and enjoy so much from your videos over the years!

Oh boy….youve got a FULL plate with all that. sorry to hear about your contractors flaking out on that project. That’s a lot to think about….but as you said, you’ll be able to ensure everything is done the way you want it. And it’s funny you mentioned the premade tractor supply coop because a coworker of mine was asking if he should buy a used one that he saw on FB marketplace versus building one. And I recommended to him that it’s not a bad option and that it’ll get him started quicker. Plus it’ll give him a while to see what he likes about it and if he ends up wanting to build on in the future he can take the designs he likes about that one and incorporate that into any future ones. So i think you’re off to a great start! I wish you the best of luck on the rest of your job😊👍

@@homesteadonomics Thank you so much! I just got the first coat of paint on the bathroom! Closet is finished except for the trim. I will prep the bedroom in the morning and go back to finish the closet and then 2nd coat in bathroom. Then back to start on the bedroom. 😜 I do like my TS chicken coop but it truly only fits 3-4 full sized hens. But it works for now. Thank you for the encouragement! Happy Sunday!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, experience and creative expertise. Growing up, mom and dad provided several opportunities for my siblings and me to learn what you are referring to. We grew chickens for meat, eggs and fertilizer for the orchard and garden. We also raised hogs and cows all on less than 5 acres each year while growing up. Appreciate your reminders down memory lane. Hope that many families and individuals come to learn how to expand their livelihoods and how to manage getting through life. Thanks again. If I can ever convince my wife to make some space in the freezers, looking at doing some meat chickens or meat rabbits. We get our eggs from our Amish neighbors at around a dollar a dozen so doesn't make much financial sense to get egg layers but it is nice for self-sufficiency. Always enjoy your videos! Me too! I’ve wanted to do meat rabbits for a while but the wire isn’t so keen on it yet…. With the current spread of animals we got…haha And to be honest if I was getting them from an Amish neighbor for that price I’d definitely go your route for sure! Gonna be better eggs than pretty much anywhere else😊👍

Have you considered collecting mesquite pods and grinding up to make chicken feed? Or flour for your own use? Tastes great added to pancake mix. Mesquite pods are a pretty much limitless supply of food in the Tucson area. Palo Verde and Ironwood seeds are also edible. I appreciate how you thought out the microclimate for the chicken house. This is often neglected in both animal and human shelters.

I have but just have not set aside the time to do it. We have used it before…. I got some from a friend as well as some from the native seed search store in Tucson. We used it 50/50 and I liked it. But I really do need to get into making my own flour as you mentioned it’s pretty abundant down here😊👍

I started with chickens. For about 20 years. Then a friend gifted me with a dozen quail eggs. Now I’m a complete quail addict! They hatch in 2 weeks, 2 days and they start laying eggs at just 6 WEEKS old! And they are prolific layers. Plus their eggs are usually safe for people with egg allergies. And they are so easy to dispatch and process for meat. Everyone who eats eggs should try the quiet and gentle Coturnix quail! They are the new city / suburbs chicken.

Harbor Freight occasionally has these little solar lights looks like a wedge for only like five bucks. I find them rather effective for perimeter highlighting. I thought you would put one of those automatic windows like you had on the greenhouse

We have a couple extremely obnoxious and aggressive roosters. Ever since they've gotten big we have lost no chickens to predators. I'm afraid to turn my back on one particular rooster. And all our chickens are free range all day long every day of the year. ........rural PA homestead.

Grandma had a pet goose that was the defender of chickens, and he HATED Grandpa... Grandpa was bent over working on the tractor one summer when the goose snuck up behind him and bit him on the family jewels... I have never seen Grandpa move that fast before. He chased that goose down and we had goose for supper LOL

Well, I certainly could do it more often but that’s usually about as much as I end up doing it. But also, we do let them out most days so it doesn’t get as much poop in it as, say a coop where the chickens don’t leave too often. Sometimes it’s more but generally every 4 months or so

Dude, don't preach to your audience. Your audience will have a widely varied level of skills and experience. Don't assume that you know these abilities for every person that watches your video. Your chicken coop is impressive, but it's a chicken coop. It's not a rocket ship that can go to Mars. I get what you are trying to communicate, but you come across as very presumptuous with some of your statements about "what people can learn."

Well… my genuine apologies if it came across that way. That certainly was not my intent. Just wanted to share my thoughts on how I think getting chickens is a great venture for folks to get into and the benefits are far more than just the eggs😊 And sticking to the theme, I just gave my thoughts in regard to how “I” view each aspect of keeping chickens “can” get a person thinking about self reliance in a broader context. I’m very aware there is a wide array of folks that watch these videos and I’m not sure how I could assume that I know what each viewers skills/experience level could possibly be. I find Joe to be one of those down to earth and genuine creators on KZbin. His projects are usually interesting and he is a fantastic resource for those that want to be more self-reliant. I'm not sure what you heard in this video but all I heard was someone that's appropriately confident in their abilities.

He explains things in a way that will let a beginner to woodworking be brave enough to tackle a project like this. He is NOT preaching. If you know zero about wood working I bet it is appreciated. And I have learned a few tricks that make projects easier! And I have been building stuff with wood for 54 years! NEVER stop learning! It keeps the brain active.

I don't mind learning new things either, and I worked my way through college as a journeyman carpenter. But his constant droning on being self-reliant gets old quick. That's a shame because this project was interesting.
