Hello! Second year of me animating things, huh Well I hope they are at least somewhat reflected in this curious work. Tried to use more style and such things here. Actual thing was animated in 2.5 months, with most of the time spend on fight itself. Hope you liked it. Thanks for viewing this piece and EXTRA thanks for liking and commenting on it. Really appreceate that after all hard work that went into all this. As always, begging ya to repost that thing at least... somewhere? Twitter, tumblr anything will do. Another enormous thanks for simply being here and well... We'll meet another time in someone's ascension!

Brooooooo, why does this never get put on my feed when a new one comes out? I'm literally subscribed and have rewatched all of these so many times, please understand that this is good, youtube. You are truly cursed to obscurity, forever under torment by the tyranny of the algorithm, I only knew there was a new one because I came back to your channel to rewatch them. Anyways, yet another great video, and you can definitely tell that you're improving. The characters seem a lot more expressive and less plastic in this one than in previous ones, which is impressive considering you haven't really changed the character models, just added more detailed movements that portray emotion, even it's small. You've done well in the past with big emotions, and it's been helped along with the (amazing) voice acting. Vriska doesn't say much during her scenes with Noir but watching Vriska's expressions change really sells it, from the initial trademark Vriska Smugness, to confusion laced with worry as Jack Noir leaves her, to the horror and anger as she realises all her friends are dead, then the fear as she realises shes not going to win and partially resigned to her fate (after she trys to get a last few hits in). Also Karkat's body language and movement in that last scence, he's an expressive guy and shows emotion through is whole body rather than just his face and you did a great job with that. And the trio walking up behind terezi as Vriska leaves, giving them a little bit of extra personality rather than having them just walk up in similar animations, or just straight having them just stand there or not be there at all. You've added a lot of little things that really ups the quality on the whole (listing all of them i noticed would take forever lmao). Also, THE WRITING. I feel like you don't get enough praise for this considering the main focus of these is the animation and fights (you don't get enough praise overall, let's be honest), but the writing that goes into not only the staging and progression of the fight, but also the character dynamics and the dialogue. I can appreciate how a lot of work goes into taking what is, in most cases, a handful of comic panels and turning them into epic confrontations. The dialogue feels so in character and, while some instances aren't the most comic-accurate, you never fail to do the characters justice and take their motivations and emotions into account. And the voice actors absolutely help in this by nailing the delivery, I tend to avoid things like this with their own voice acting because I'm kinda hyperaware of fake-feeling voice acting and over-exaggerated tones and cringe inside when I notice it, I can't stand it no matter how good the rest of it is (this applies to a lot of youtubers and, unfortunely, some shows and movies). But not once did i get that feeling with these voice actors, they are excellent at portraying their characters their emotions and the back and forth between them feels so natural (special props to Terezi's and Doc Scratch's VA's in that opening scene, beautiful). The backgrounds have been you've done extremely well since the start, and have continued that trend throughout all of them. Details like the chalk squiggles that make the smaller rooms like Terezi's feel lived in, the industrial and futuristic look of the meteor, with a lot of equipment and other elements that make it seem like it's actually a functioning base (or at least was at some point), and, in this one, the huge epic atmosphere of Skaia. There wasn't as much of it in this one, but you do really well at effecting the enviroment during a fight and letting the characters use it to their advantage (which was especially good in the feline carnival and 3x showdown). Most animated fights consist of just the two fighters duking it out in a flat landscape, occasionally smashing into flat surfaces like walls and floors, completely ignoring any and all landmarks. But damn do you make fights interesting. Also the contrast of the fact that, in previous fights, theres always a back-and-forth between the characters, they get some hits or some near-misses, almost all the characters are injured in some way during their fights because all the trolls are on similar power levels. They have had to be in order to beat the game. But in this episode? (they're episodes at this point, this is becoming some epic movie level shit) Vriska gets no hits in on Jack. This fight feels less like a skilled battle between equals and more of an anime battle between two op characters, which they both are at this point, but one is overwhelmingly more op than the other and thus its already decided. Noir is truly intimidating here and shows his terrifying power and competence as an assassin. Also his character model is absolutely fantastic, I love your carapacian design. All the models are pretty great, but I especially love his (and Lord English's in G I R L, even if that was mostly to do with the amazing effects in that one). Honestly, my only complaints with these, used to be the character faces and plasticity, but thats pretty much fixed if you keep that expression work up. It's the clipping that happens on occasion. I don't know enough about 3D animation to know how difficult it is to get around that. Like, Terezi's hair clipping into her collar seems like its something that can't really be fixed without animating her individual strands of hair or something (which is not something I guess is really practical, given your resourses and time). But things like Sollux's hand clipping into Feferi's face seems like something that could have been fixed more easily, even if you have to use the camara angles to hide it. But again, I don't know enough to really comment on this lmao, and its not too distracting from the rest of the high quality anyways. But, aside from that, keep up the good work!! I, unfortunely, don't really have any sort of platform to advertise this, although I really wish I did, you deserve a hell of a lot more than over a thousand subscribers.

I'd still encourage you to use less camera movement, especially in scenes where it's just two people talking. The camera is pretty good in the fight scene because there's a lot of movement going on with the characters, but in the intro scenes, it's pretty disorienting to have the camera moving around all the time. Other than that, great job! It's cool to see you becoming more and more ambitious with your animations!

0:20 Scratch is too tall here. He was supposed to be 4 feet tall ("the only character with a canonical height"!). Vriska is 13, yes, but he will still not be that much taller than her. 4:25 Oooh, that's a cool musical combination.
@lordbuss
@lordbuss 2 жыл бұрын
7:58 Ok, no, i do not like this part. I am not sure whether this is a criticism of the video, or just a lamentation of the fact the events can't be recreated well, but they are not recreated well: Vriska has all the luck. And she stole everything she could from Noir (there isn't a reason in canon to think he is immune to her luck stealing). Vriska should have the action advantage. She has many cool tricks, everything works in her favor, and every movement she does will be executed flawlessly, while Noir will be clumsy and unlucky. This would not help. Noir has too much raw power (all the energy in the world, channeled as an attack through a weapon that almost destroyed Skaia even without any green sun upgrade) resistance and vitality (immortal and eternal creature), and also a great speed (not at general movements, but specifically in teleporting, i think he can move space relative to him like he can move his own body). He is very straightforward. He will possibly win through endurance and Vriska's exhaustion, Vriska making too many small mistakes, his attacks being too strong to stop even with perfect luck. And possibly just being completely invulnerable to her attacks (though if he was COMPLETELY invulnerable, there wouldn't be any fight in the first place, so he probably isn't). It would look...exactly like 6:52-7:30. But not the later part. Not Noir perfectly and gracefully capturing attacks without Vriska noticing. And when Vriska is deeply injured, she would still keep fighting, and it would work, she is so lucky she can make "progress" even without weapons and limited in her movement. It wouldn't really be progress against Noir, of course, but it wouldn't be this very obvious immediate defeat. Thank you for reading this mini-essay about the tactical capabilities of angry gods. All that is not to say "this video is terrible", or "the author shouldn't do things". The video existing is better than it not existing. It's just not as a good as a hypothetical perfect video that would also be tactically and logistically accurate in addition to all the virtues of this video. Of course, when doing something good, everyone must decode what is the actual parameter they are optimizing. Also, the entire point of the scene in Homestuck was that Vriska could theoretically win, it wouldn't change anything, everyone is still dead. Vriska's defeat was not caused by being not powerful or not lucky enough, but by her recklessness and not thinking about the consequences of her actions. But of course, it's stupid to look at a depiction of something depicted and say "it wasn't depicted in the original, so the fact it is depicted is itself a flaw". No, i am glad the video exists, that is certainly not a criticism i have.
@Ichellor

@@lordbuss Well, first of all, thank you for such an elaborated critique, i really appreceate it and it certainly caught me off guard with it's sheer size! Regarding scratch's height and similiar things it should be noted that this is a adaptation, rather attempt at full faithful recreation. And well, about luck part. I was thiinking bout whole clumsyness thing and all the negative effects of luck on Noir durign development of the concept and i've decided to showcase perhaps most unfaithful thing to webcomic here. I wanted to show that Noir is proffessional assassin, with a lot of expirience and absolute control of what he's doing and even more absolute power to back it up. He simply doesn't need luck because he doesn't allow for a scenario where he loses against rather amature Vriska. When he catches Vriska's hand, it is a perfectly calculated action and no amout of luck can bend it. No amount of cool tricks and winks from lady Fate able to even slow him down, sort of like terminator for gods. Even more of a threat that he was in original. And generally it was to showcase that kids and trolls can't just call Vriska's super luck powers and instakill Noir, rather to show him as he was described in the story earlier - an unbeatable boss. Perhaps this is not the best descision, and I certainly did a bad job at portraying smaller effects of luck in a fight, but oh well, who we are without our mistakes? Once again, I'm very grateful for your essay comment and hope you'll stick around to poke criticism at me for my mistakes!

@@Ichellor Excuse me for writing after whole eleven months, but I just want to highlight two things I see as (sort of) reasonable counterpoints. 1. Even with all Jack's professionalism, lack of luck will affect him, for he now shares his mind and body with a good dog. As we saw not once before, Bec's thoughts overtake Jack on a regular basis even when Jade is not around, and were the reason why Aradia was sent teleported all the way to Green Sun instead of being sliced in half once she lift off time field. And being ripped of conceptual luck could seriously increase chances of Jack not being able to control situation and/or his own actions. 2. Though this part is debatable, Vriska summoned not just an RP constume with a sabre, she practically became an avatar of her ancestor, with all her power and, possibly, experience. These two things are make Noir and Vriska somewhat equal in terms of capability to oppose each other, making the latter lose in a long run, when she's out of luck, tricks and endurance, while Jack, powered by Green Sun, still wins. That being said, I still really like this animation, regardless how it's different from original.
