There's at least one really significant token of wisdom/insight expressed in this movie. Here is one instance, see if you can figure out the lesson/message on your own. If you're a person of any depth at all, then it wont be hard, and you'll probably be able to pick out a lot more if you watch the whole movie from start to finish. I'll attempt to upload that later.

I love this movie. The best part about it is that they just let the animal's faces, body language, and the voice actors do the acting instead of using CGI to add exaggerated emotions and talking mouths. I feel like this way, the voice actors have more room to act the way they feel is best. This scene is so sad, but powerful too.

I like how each of the pets accidents are character based. Sassy and Chance's accidents are physical while Shadow's is more emotional. The whole movie he doesn't lose hope and after he bangs up his leg he believes that he can't do it, and its up to the others to motivate him to keep going, just like he did for them.

Learning how to say goodbye is a neccessary skill. Everything in life has an expectation date, so the thing to do is enjoy the time you have and make the best use of it, don't put what you can do today off for tomorrow, because one day there will not be a tomorrow. And when it comes to the people who love you, treasure each moment with them, because one day you'll wake up and they won't be there. "Do you love life, then don't waste time, because that's the stuff life is made of." - Benjamin Franklin.

The animals in this movie are such good actors and so well-trained. Seriously, just watch this scene on mute. Even without the excellent voice acting, you can still get the feel of urgency and hopelessness from Chance and Shadow in this scene just from their acting alone.

I think i know the wisdom/insight on this while i feel the pain on this. Shadow was a dog that was very smart and wise to the others, but when it goes worse for him, he is changed. The wisdom on this is the loyalty from chance for being there for him, being a good friend to him, and not letting him give up since he was helping chance get far. Chance was helping him get to the rest of the way to the end like a good loyal honest friend. No matter what Shadow said to be different or stubborn, Chance did not quit. He always had faith in shadow for being strong. That really is sad and beautiful in a friendship. That makes the tears.

Unfortunately, we currently haven't found a cure for Parkinson's (Michael's disease) yet. :-( Right now, all we can do, is treat his symptoms. But luckily, on the bright side, Parkinson's Disease isn't fatal, so I'm sure that Michael will have plenty of years before he finally heads off to the afterworld. ^_^ All that having been said, he's hanging in there really well. :-) He gets himself through with optimism & an undefeatable spirit. ^_^

+Priscilla P. THIS! I literally just finished watching this old classic again. I knew exactly what was going to happen and everything, and yet still, the emotions this film brought to me this time around was beyond anything I could've expected. That part at the end when Shadow appeared over the hill at the end of the movie, even though I knew it was coming, choked me up the most. Even re-watching that scene had the same effect on me EVERY time. I don't know why it had such a significant effect on me like this, but I like to believe that the awesome music during the scene, along with the scene in this video, really did a splendid job in presenting it. You could definitely connect with Shadow, Chance, and Sassy. This is one film that has truly stood the test of time, and it's easy to both see and FEEL why.

I think I lasted about 4 seconds. And I agree, this was a really good example of a movie where they successfully used live animals and voice actors without CGI and it's incredibly powerful. No one was watching this going, "Wait a second, dogs can't talk" and just tuning out of the rest of the movie. Nowadays, the CGI can pull you farther out of the movie rather than making it more believable.
@TheMouseAvenger
@TheMouseAvenger 11 ай бұрын
Well, I think that last part's kinda subjective (as is art in general). :-) I personally love digital enhancements, puppetry, CGI, & other traditional ways of making animals talk in movies & TV (& I know that there are many, many other people who do the same). ^_^ And I especially like newer movies of that nature, because the CGI is so advanced nowadays. I mean, when I watch the "Jungle Book" & "Lion King" remakes, I'm always left astonished by how real the animals look, & how convincingly they appear to be talking. I'm not taken out of the movie or show at all! ^_^

It took balls to put these animals in these harsh scenarios. I still feel physically shaken by Shadow getting all dirtied up in the pit. They show agonizing shots of his paws struggling to climb out and it's pure grit without any sugarcoating. The dog is screwed and he knows it. Makes it that much more amazing when he comes up over the hill at the end.

There's a hint of pride in Shadow's voice when he tells Chance that he's learned everything he needs. I can imagine him smiling on the inside in that brief pause before he says so. On the other hand, it means that he takes comfort in knowing the family will be taken care of in his absence; making it easier for him to give up. So in a way, by being such a good teacher to Chance, who will not abandon his friend and mentor in his time of need, Shadow saved himself.

I recently rewatched this and this scene made me cry so hard and I just had to hug Echo my rottweiler and best friend. I've had Echo for three years and like Shadow, she is old and wise and turns eleven on July 27th (She was born in 2003) the anniversary when I adopted Echo from a Rottweiler breeder when she retired. Echo has been a tower of strength for the past few years. She helped me cope with the death of my grandmother and earlier this year, we decided to adopt Ruby, a Rottweiler puppy as Echo treats her like her own daughter despite nearing the end of her life and gradually slowing down but that does not stop her from mentoring Ruby. When Echo passes away I will still love her and her legacy will live on as I will place a memorial at my Rose garden where i bonded with Echo when that time comes...

This scene is so sad to me because it reminds me of my next door neighbor's golden retriever. He was just fine running around our yard one night like he always did, and then suddenly he just collapsed. The vet soon arrived but he was gone. I cried the whole night.

The other sad thing is Don Ameche (Voice of Shadow) died shortly after this film released. He was 85 and left one heck of a legacy behind.

I've seen this movie like a hundred times (and a hundred more is to come, I'm sure), and every time during this scene I'm like "No, Shadow, don't you give up, you are so close! What are you doing? No, don't lie down, you're strong, you can do it!" and when I see him at the end I can't contain the emotions.

I've read on a page on the internet somewhere that in a early script it was Chance who fell in the hole instead of Shadow but it was changed before filming began

One of the most-powerful scenes in the movie, & definitely one that's always tugged at my heartstrings. 🥺 It always makes me SO HAPPY when Shadow finally makes it at the end with Chance & Sassy! ^_^ One thing I never understood, though, is why Shadow suddenly gave up when he fell in the muddy pit. After all, he was so determined to get himself & his friends back home! Why did he have such an emotional turn-around? :-?

"Look, you pushed me this far, now I'm pushing you the rest of the way! You know back there in the woods, even when things looked really bad, I always believed we'd make it cause I thought you were too stubborn to quit! Well, you're not gonna quit. Not now, not when we're this close. Now try again!" "Do you think it's easy for me to admit I can't do it? I'm too old." "That's not true. There's nothing you can't do." "I have nothing more to give Chance. And it's time for you to be on your own." "But I want you with me. I love you Shadow." "You've learned everything you need, Chance. Now all you have to learn is how say goodbye." "I won't let you give up!" An exchange this powerful in a kids movie. They was really playing with our emotions in the 90s. 😭😭😭💔💔

You know it's weird. I used to watch this film as a kid all the time and only recently rewatched it after years. And even though it is a film made for childern about talking cats and dogs it was this great awesome film that really did feel like the epic journey (both in the actual journey as for the characters developing you know) the title promised. Now most films I watch in recent years either are just alright but utterly forgettable or outright sucked. They all feel loud but empty, or is that just me? So was this film just that good or is it just nostalgia? Have I become some cynical dick or am I just watching the wrong films? Anway, yeah, that dog carried his balls in a wheelbarrow man.

G0atboy 100% agree. Movies & TV Shows today are lacking depth to their stories/characters. They seem shallow & rushed. Its all about how much money they can make off movies now. Instead of how much passion & creativity they put into them.

All three pets faced near death experiences with injury. Sassy fell over the waterfall and almost drowned if it wasn’t for the old man. Chance got porcupine quills stuck in his muzzle due to bothering the porcupine out of curiosity. Shadow unknowingly walked over a bunch of wood that was meant to block a mud hole and he fell in that injured his leg.

Guys it's okay. Though the scene makes it look like shadow is injured, just know that there is a camera crew down in that hole who's not gonna let anything bad happen to those doggies.
