Home inspector here. Just a quick FYI. One of the risks of using sprayfoam on the inside of a roof is that it seals the inside but not the outside of the roof decking. If your shingles develop a leak, the water won't come into the structure, but it will still wood-rot the roof decking and you won't know it until the roof is ready to collapse. At that point, repair is going to be much more extensive and expensive.

You are also suppose to leave a 1 inch clearance for air movement which was not done, and by not doing this, it can cause issues with the roof plywood and shingles at least here in Illinois that's how they want it. Basically she is starving the attic space of breathing that's also why they check the soffit vents to see if they are clogged in any way. Also our code for wall insulation they don't want the wall insulation paper covering the 2 by 4's face because now drywallers cannot glue their drywall Inspectors are really picky about that as well.

Just a quick tip, when you have to do two coats of spray foam it is hard to see if you have missed a spot on the second coat , but if you spray a Guide coat of a water based non gloss black it becomes obvious when you miss a spot , a guide coat is just a light misting coat not full coverage , water based does not off gassing and will not affect the spray foam 👍

You are an inspiration no matter the age you inspire. A tip on you plant. When you see a new leave grow, break it off quickly, that promotes growth on the lower bare stem and eventually you have a plant looking great and it prevents top heaviness which makes the plant tip over. If it gets too tall you can clip the top six inches and grow a new plant. That is where the bottom leaves 🍃 come in handy to camouflage the cut. Happy growing plant mommy.

Great job. Just bought a house and looking for DIY tips. One thing that would make wall insulation job easier and more efficient would be to place the ladder in the middle of 3 rows and tuck the tops of insulation in as far as you can reach safely, leaving the insulation to dangle. Remove the ladder and tuck in the rest of insulation Less trips up and down the ladder means less chances of falls or injury is how I sees it.✌😉

Pro tip.....staple the insulation to the side of the stud not the face of the stud. You want sheet rock to stud contact, having insulation paper and or fiberglass between stud and rock can cause issues with loss screws that lead to board movement and screw head pops over time..... great job keep building your skill set.

As a career insulator of 50 years. You did a fantastic job foaming. What foam did you use? Open cell or closed cell.. hard to tell on video. Tip.. do air infiltration..you could of used foam behind all your electrical boxes which would of increased R value behind them. Secondly, you can use a quality caulking to fill electric wiring entrances in the top plate and corners to reduce drafting. Also, run a bead of caulking where all the corner walls meet and seams on your king studs around doors, windows. You might be dry walled by now tho..

And my professional field when you’re insulating a structure that the roof is insulated with metal/foam insulation with a sticky back to it like this video has it cancels the two out so just be warned and be warned you are trying to make your structure more insulated because you have a lot of drafts. Make sure to close up the drafts and use clothes cell insulation.

I wouldn’t use foam anywhere, (aside from a boat hull) and I just laugh when people ask if I can modify their electrical or plumbing after the fact. It also conceals moisture intrusion issues and doesn’t breathe, allowing wood framing to rot.

This was awesome, thank you for sharing! I was curious on few items just wondering but the spray foam you installed, was it a certain depth of it? Like 2" thick and how do you determine what the depth needs to be or recommended to be? Also any reason why you elected not to spray foam the walls also as you did with the ceiling? Lastly do you need to add moisture protection like clear plastic that staples to the stud to keep moisture out? Iv seen few other pro's suggest it in colder climates. Lastly, some people in comments have said it's dangerous to health if the chemicals are not mixed correctly! Can you share if you had to so any chemicals mixing to prepare the spray foam, if any was required. Are you happy with the results? Can you also share the costs, savings you had with this project? Do you have any tips/tricks and suggestions for anyone who is looking into following in your steps? Thanks again for any info is much appreciated!

Way to dive in and tackle the task, for DIY appears well done, just a question please, don’t you need some ventilation in the air space between ceiling sheet rock and underside of spray foam ? Just seems intuitive would need to breath in that tiny attic space with gable vents each end or a ridge vent , just trapping that air would think could create problems ? Thank you

Your spray foaming looks good, but two inches is not very much for a ceiling. At R6/in that is only R12 and it would be great to get closer to R30. That being said, I recognize this is not a house, but it could save you a lot on utilities. I suppose you could always use batts over the spray (flash-and-batt), but I don't know what your final purpose is for this space. Great batt install btw

Wow, I’m itchy just watching you insulate. I’m curious on why you selected fiberglass instead of rock wool. I’m currently insulating my attic space and I decided to go with rock wool. At the moment there are 23 comments to this video and woah I totally didn’t expect to see such controversy regarding insulation. I bought the smallest kit of the same spray foam that you used (I bought the 4lb kit) to test. I’m glad that you said that f you stop spraying for more than 30 seconds that it would clog the tip. My kit only came with 2 tips so I’ll need to plan accordingly. In my case I’m planning on spraying a thin (if possible) layer to fill in between spaces in skip sheeting mostly to make it difficult for bugs and stuff to make their home. Then I’ll cover with rock wool. Thanks for the video. Great job and keep the content coming.

@phildaddy1491l
@phildaddy1491l Жыл бұрын
Really enjoyed your youthful enthusiasm and neatness in your work. First time I have watched your videos. I don’t like to be negative, but that is nowhere near enough insulation in a ceiling. It is hard to tell exactly how much foam you have, but I am seeing a lot of 2x4” projecting out from the foam which tells me you have nowhere near 31/2” . It wasn’t clear to me how much you were trying to get , I thought you where trying to get 2” with two coats. Anyway 2” would be R13. They used to say Polyiso foam was R7 per inch so I still have that figure in my head as My experience with foam goes back to 1980, yes this product is nothing new. I am a retired remodeling contractor and am currently redoing a master bath in my house 13:43 and have opened up the previously flat ceiling to an open “cathedral” ceiling. I opted to use 2” foam sheets cut down to fit in between the rafters2x8”. And will do three layers to get about R40(39). Yes it is a nightmare amount of work! I was going to use spray but it can occasionally go wrong especially when put in large depths. I also decided I wanted an airspace, as there is now some controversy as to whether no airspace can cause problems down the road with sheathing and shingles. I used 3/4” strips down each side of the rafters to create an airspace below the first sheet of 2” poli foam. One interesting thing to me is to see ( feel) the difference between one and two sheets on a couple spots where I had to remove small sections for plumbing vent. Today I am putting on the third layer, I won’t finish in one day. It is a nightmare amount of work, I am retired though! We used to do this a lot in the early eighties as they only used spray foam for pipes, the first job we used it on walls and ceilings 1987 and yes in hindsight we used nowhere enough. Since your space is for a workshop and not living you should be okay with the amount of foam you used, but it would be better to have more. My neighbor , close friend and former client(I’m retired , not fired) just had a cathedral ceiling insulated with a layer of spray foam then with bats on top that supposedly gives R48, No Venting! I think that is a mistake, but professionals and inspector said it was up to code. Ps how many ceilings hav eI personally fixed that rotted inside out from someone else stuffing fiberglass insulation into open ceiling rafters with nor airspace venting … Two !what a nightmare. And I know there are many more lurking out there. Sorry to write so much…. Ive just experienced a lot. If you are going to stay there for awhile you might want to put in more insulation. I do admire your youthful enthusiasm,good luck! One more thing… set up a scaffold when working it saves a ton of work, even if it is a 2x10 or 12 between two ladders. Better would be a rolling scaffolding with an aluminum walk board, you still have a lot of ceiling and high wall space to do , 13:43 about $600 investment. Sell it when you are done if you won’t use it down the road.
@krehbein
@krehbein Жыл бұрын
Some good points. Have to agree, according to HD who sells this it’s r6.5 for one inch. So maybe r13. 5.5” of rock wool would get you r23. Probably a lot cheaper too. On my office shed, I think I’ll do like you did and use rigid foam with an air gap.

I would never use spray foam in a house. Once it is applied...there is no going back. If repairs are needed, in terms of wiring or structural, accessing those areas is impossible. Banks in the UK will not finance a home with spray foam for this reason.
@PeterLawton
@PeterLawton Жыл бұрын
I don't buy that. Foam is more easily cut than wood so repairs are certainly possible. I could believe that so many flawed installations have occurred in the UK that lenders or insurance companies shy away from SPF homes. But that is not what you said.

@jwhite4
@jwhite4 Жыл бұрын
I'm guessing cost. Spray foam is R6.44 (~6.5) per inch. She did 2" and bought 600+200 sqrt coverage cans. . From Home Depot, that's $999+$389 -> $1388 for 400sqft of R13. In fiberglass, that's ten 15"x32' rolls. $21.97x10 -> 219.70, over 6x as much for spray! My guess is that while batts would be easy to install in vertical stud bay, they could be a PITA to install horizontally (under the roof). A lot of support rods needed, plus gravity always trying to pull them down. Plus she mentioned just working the spray around the wiring and other protrusions wasn't easy. Trying to install fiberglass batts would have been worse.

Hi, were you able to get this permitted under ADU classification? It appears you have done all the necessary work to classify as ADU.

Wow you go girl! Looks fabulous 😍 I was also wondering, do you need to put up drywall where you’re going to do shiplap? Just wondering! 😊 I am always SO happy when I see a new video from you!

Wonderful work. I want to do this work. Is it possible to know more about the materials used? I live in Egypt and I want to do this. The rain is coming soon and I will be afraid for my children.

Fiberglass insulation does not get stapled to the face of the stud. It gets stapled to the inside edge, leaving the face edge of the studs exposed.

According to the manufacturer of this product you can staple the inside edge or the face of the stud! There are benefits to both applications 🙌

My understanding has always been that if you intend to glue the drywall to the stud along with screwing it then you need to keep the tabs inside the stud. However if your just screwing the drywall as 99.9% of walls are done, then overlapping is the preferred installation process.

@@kleinml Except you will get more loose wall board and screw pops when you screw over lapped tabs.

How thing is this spray foam applied? Is it even close to an R38? It looks like 2" of spray foam...

Just out of curiosity, because I’m doing a somewhat similar build, why not just spray foam the entire thing? Is it cost prohibitive? And what R-value did you end up getting out of 2 inches on the ceiling. Thanks!!

That’s what I was wondering also. Probably a cost issue. Closed cell has an R value of 6.5-7

Add a 2x4 on edge to bottom of rafters then fill it all up with closed you can get near the recommended R50. Codes usually say R38 minimum. Can't get that with 3 1/2" And DIY is rarely much cheaper with Closed cell sprayfoam so just use a contractor

@@mrmotofy that’s exactly what I was thinking. I got a quote for 5.5” of open cell they say it’s an R21. 1600sqft was like $4k but to that in batt was over $2k. Why would I not do spray foam in that case?
