There are so many small e-bike brands pop up here and there. For sure not all of them will survive in the next few years. Eventually your e-bike will require maintenance and replace worn-out parts. With so many non-standardised components, if the company no long exists, where do you get the replacement parts? So your fancy e-bike becomes a fancy paper weight after a few years? Or you just buy new e-bike every few years? Gear drives require precise alignment and the structure with enough stiffness to maintain it. Unless you over-build the rear triangle of a bike. The bumps and unevenness of city roads will flex the bike structure a lot, and the alignment of the gears will be thrown out of the window. That is why although gear drive bicycle has existed for very long. They never became widely used, because it is hard to engineer a good reliable and cost effective one. Good luck with that single sided rear arm to house the gear and shaft.

Beixo have a folding electric bike with shaft drive and 7 gears and a front hub motor. Mid drives are expensive to fix. Front hub you can easily change and if you want just put back the ordinary wheel and it's a normal folding bike. I have one and it's really powerful.

it is actually the opposite, shaft drive is less efficient and that is the reason why they are quite rare (also price and lack of shifter, although i don't fully understand why they are so expensive). of course it helps a bit that it does not get dirty when enclosed properly but not that much that it becomes more efficient than a traditional chain system. being electric helps to smooth out that efficiency gap, at least if it isn't a mid drive system.

@@tonylawson6636 yes i've been following it. in my knowledge it still isn't ready for use and have some unsolved problems. a generator & motor combo might be even nicer but most likely small and affordable generators and motors are something like 85% efficient, thus full cycle would have 28% power loss (probably more)

With the HONBIKE, the motor drives the front wheel (Hub drive), not the shaft. If a motor would have to drive the shaft, it needs very low RPM and therefore gearing. There is no efficient setup for that on the market. The real wheel is shaft driven by the pedals. Shaft drive is nothing new, it is used in motorcycles (BMW, Moto Guzzi, Honda), and a few bicycles: BMW, Beixo Slim, Brik Fietsen,... Disadvantages of the shaft drive is the heavier weight and the costs. It also makes gear shifts difficult, and a drive shaft always has some play.... All that makes it uninteresting in most bicycle applications.

Because is less efficient than Chain or Belts. Chain and belts are just so much better compared, it's less complicated, it's easy to change from 1-7 because is simpler. So over time people preffered the simplicity of the chain and belt over the complicated but sturdy and very resistant shafted bike.

Why don't single speed bikes have driveshafts? I don't think it would have to be much heavier if a carbon fiber drive shaft was used.
@carstekoch
@carstekoch 2 жыл бұрын
Mainly because they are less eficient. A clean, perfect condition, freshly lubricated shaft drive is less efficient than a muddy chain drive in the same price range. Although this is less of a problem with electric motors. You have a lot of torque on that shaft drive (there is a reason why the shaft is that thick) and i'm not so sure if carbon fibre can withstand it. Plus you would still need metal gears, carbon fibre is simply to soft, and with that, joints on the shaft drive.

Shaft drives look neat but are less efficient than chain drives and they are heavy. The best chain drive I've seen is Allen Millyard's downhill mountain bike. that driveshaft is unneccessary complication, there will be friction loss in the drive, better would have been an electric motor in the hub of the wheel instead of that extra driveshaft. thats the main thing i'm not liking on this bike. another thing i'm not liking is the cables that are all visible outside, it would have looked so much cleaner and nicer if the cable were layed within the frame. the battery should have been inside of the frame, that frame could fit a much bigger battery than that on that bike, for more speed and more range. that bike is a bit slow, its much slower than the cars in the traffic and becoming like an obstacle to the cars, one day a car driver will not pay attention and there will then be an accident with that slow bike. i think that bike is for what it is worth new maybe $400 on the current market. beside that, that guy had to assemble the bike by himself, many little parts. a consumer is not a bike technician to have the knowlege how to put a bike together and that can be dangerous when that bike is then moved in traffic.
