Hi, once owned a BMW F700 GS took it for the first MOT @ 3000 miles tester detected play in rear wheel bearing got it done under there extended warranty but they did say it was a grey area i said well the tester didn't think so. Like yourself i am a spanner bloke run a couple of 70s Triumphs never thought i would own an Enfield because of what people say about the build quality but i have a 350 classic which i honestly cannot fault. Cheers Baz

3000 miles? Did they tell you if it was just a wear failure, or if water got in and corroded things? Water getting in is a bit of a KTM problem and I wonder if BMW sources their wheels from the same place?
@bazxl572 ай бұрын
@@pauln6803 They never said but i did a bit of digging online and there was a few mentions of the bearings spinning in the hub on the F700 that is what i was concerned about, having owned 70s boxer's and changed the taper bearings having to adjust them in a stack to get the play set right so they were not too tight because they would get hot & spin in the hub but the bearings were not tapers on the F700 they were ball bearings where you had no play

My f650gs is the first bike i have owned with ABS, had the bike 5 years and the only time it came on was when i tested it in the underground garage. You can keep all the electronic gizmos. If an enfield goes wrong its cheap and easy to repair, thats the whole point of them.

Honda has sold over 100,000 cb350. I agree with you on RE, precisely why my himalayan is a keeper. My other bike a guzzi v85 for diy maintenance reasons. Im always staggered why people spend £300 for a dealer service on a himmy, valve clearance and oil change.

Very happy with my Enfields. I have a Meteor and a Hunter. The Meteor benefitted from a pair of more compatible rear shocks (from a Hunter) and I fitted a hi-tech gear selector linkage and selector pivot. This was a brilliant upgrade. Both bikes are perfect "oldies" bikes and remarkably different. I also have a Honda Grom which is my run around. It's gear linkage is even worse than the Meteor but a very similar upgrade has cured it. (almost as good as an Enfield now) Love the channel BTW.

The CB350 is made in India . No doubt a best seller there , so the large number of recalls is not surprising , a cheap part , not up to the job, easily swapped . The GB350 is built in Japan . [ better quality ? ] Looks like a RE 350 Classic , but imitation IS the sincerest form of flattery .😊 It sounds like Honda quickly found out about the problem and immediately set about fixing it. Credit to Honda . One also wonders where the faulty components are made . Both the " Teutonic" manufacturers have stuff and whole bikes made in China and are reluctant to stand by their product . I've only had Redditch Enfields and although they have 'character' , I prefer a Triumph classic bike . Better built , more reliable .( from my experience anyway ). Early Indian Bullet imports were crap , but they have developed into a good bike . I'd have one now , I'm seriously thinking about a 452 Himmy. So I can relate to your love of the brand . Good videos Ian.

My CB350 CLASSIC is manufactured in June 2024 but in the list that honda has sent to service centre my VIN/CHASSIS number is not included for camshaft issue. So not all bikes manufactured in June and July 2024 are affected for camshaft issue

I have no idea why anyone in India would buy a Honda 350 when you have all those RE 350s there, plus workshops for RE

That`s an age thingy going on ?. Honda had a lot of cam/engine problems years ago when they were bringing out all those different engine configurations (early 80s ?) At your age you must have helped all your mates change cams in ford pintos. Its nearly always a design problem (Not enough oil) Could be a race to bring models to the streets causing it. Royal Enfield seem to develop a good engine and spend years dressing it in different clothes (the old face lift trick) As for build quality I had a few new bikes in the 70`s and 80`s and RE are far better quality admittedly the big 4 have improved. Since the 2000`s I think they all have sort of equalled out. BMW were always head and shoulders above the rest in both quality and PRICE. Now I m old I have just bought my last bike and for all the reasons you quote it is a RE.
@BillCook622 ай бұрын
I totally agree. One of the reasons I bought an interceptor is the simplicity. No rider modes. No traction control or 6 axis IMU or anti wheelie nonsense, just back to basics motorcycling and a bike I can fix myself.

Surely, the point here is that Honda has identified the problem and is dealing with it, unlike KTM who are still in denial over their problems. As for the sensor, well that's an outsourced part from Bosch most likely. I've always believed it's THAT you ride, not WHAT you ride, Enfields are not my thing at all, but I enjoy your content because of the mechanical aspect and riding impressions, I'm certainly not going to rush out and buy one though and I'm not about to sell my Honda's either, I've had 25 since the early 90's and had 3 recalls, 2 on later models 2013 and 2016. It's also very easy to check if your bike requires a recall on Honda's website. Just enter your chassis number in the owners area and it will tell you if a recall is required.
@pauln68032 ай бұрын
They all buy in components from outside. These days it's far from uncommon to outsource everything but chassis assembly, slotting the engine in and routing the wiring loom. Actually, outsourcing the entire bike build is becoming increasingly common.

GB 350 looks suspiciously like Classic 350, including the engine layout .. How the mighty has fallen. Heard rumors that they are doing himmy copy with the same 350 engine too. My brother had 3 BMWs 1200 .. Always shaft problems and vibrations.. Had to fix his electronics several times (I'm electronics engineer) controller of the fuel pump that is molded in to the pump and sold as one unit, the abs modules are famous for failing too .. Talking about rip-offs. REs are unique brand at the moment. Their heritage is still present, they are cheap as you said it .. Set of spanners and maybe 30€ diagnostics tool and you are good to go.

A man of my own thoughts, if you can't fix things your self all you can do is rely on the dealership. Walk in the dealership now days and that €80-€100 straight away. People buy honda who are not mechanical minded so they don't have to do this. At least Honda are standing by the product unlike KTM.

Honda build quality has been poor for a long time now. Think Honda's previous reputation for being Bullet proof is now a distant memory. I had two safety recalls due to poor quality parts. Honda CBR300R, replacement Crankshaft due to potential Big End failure. Honda CB300R, recall for gearbox mainshaft failing. Rust issues, Headset bearings failing at 3,000 miles, heavy oil consumption. Give me a Royal Enfield any day of the week.👍

Hondas reputation for reliability is in reality a myth created by the millions they have spent on their advertising campaigns over the past few decades, I well remember the many warranty jobs I did on many various models during my time in the motorcycle trade during the 1980s and into the early 90s in more recent years Ive discovered a similar situation with some of their car models too.

Nuts and Bolts bikes 👍, Agree completely , When we as consumers began to accept high tech dealer only maintainable machines as the norm` instead of voting with our wallets for easily maintained and low total cost of ownership motorcycles it became open slather $$ wise for the manufacturers. Thank goodness for Sid`s vision for R.E. Part of me is kind of surprised that the aftermarket has not produced a carb` kit for the 650 twin motor for those who do not like fuel injection , Not that there is anything wrong with what comes standard on the bike injection wise in my opinion , Just thinking out loud !! 😂 Enjoying your videos and common sense approach. People having a go at you for riding your own bikes of choice is just sad! I love my Classic 500 and Himalayan 411 but I don't demand all other people should. I think there is plenty of fear of Royal Enfield by the fan boys and girls of the long term big brands, like Honda and KTM. They hate the thought of any threat to their brands possible future and sales. If they don't like your bike choices there are plenty of other KZbin channels out there.....

Honda iffy cams is nothing new, just hasn't happened for a while now, the only company to have cam, cam chain and tensioner problems on an ohv engine
@iandennis78362 ай бұрын
I remember this from early 80s.......one of the magazines at the time had a vf750 and when they got an engineer to strip it down they found one of the camchaft sprockets was about 5 to 10 thou off centre. The resulting runout of the camchain caused the tensioner to fail in as little as 5 or 6 thousand miles. Honda initially denied the problem but ended up producing the vfr with gear driven cams, a very expensive solution to a simple problem that restored their reputation.
@andyc7502 ай бұрын
@@iandennis7836 far more bikes than the V4 had problems, that is the final disaster that broke the camels back, CBX550, most of the V4 range, the CX500 for a while, CB750 and 900 were fragile if not looked after really well, the Superdream 250 had issues as well along with numerous small bikes, Honda in the late 70's to the mid 80's were pretty crap, the VFR when it came out was a loss leader that cost them a fortune just to rescue the reputation of Honda

@@andyc750 okay. Well, I've had a Superdream and still have a cbx550 f2. Tony Galea did the cbx camchain tensioner mod and 50k miles later, still on the same camchain and tensioner. My only 2 problems with the Superdream were rear shocks and the balancer chain. As I recall the cbx 750 didn't have tensioner woes and again IIRC the main problem with the cx500 was the valve seats eating away till it was impossible to set the valve clearances ......this was 40+ years ago so I may have details confused between models. I was a despatch rider at the time and reliable transport was king.
