Thanks for the video on such a common requirement on these carbs - Having just stripped and rebuilt my 400/4 carbs I would recommend where possible using the original brass components -especially the float valve as I could not get leak free carbs with replacement float valves- it’s worth ultrasonic cleaning of original parts and using those if you have them - the original float needles clean up with a bit of wire wool to ensure good seal- be interesting to see how you get on with this

Hi thanks for your comments they make sense. I have heard this issue before about original parts rather than the ones supplied in the repairs kits. There are loads of kits from different suppliers at different prices. The ones I am using are from the leading Honda specialist in the UK and I believe these are OEM so hopefully will work fine. I decided to rebuild the carbs with new bits as I) they have been professionally cleaned and reassembled with the original parts but are still causing issues and 2) the bike is nearly 50 years old with a very high high mileage with all the wear and corrosion that implies. I guess it is a case of watch this space.

Hi, this is a great video, just what I need! I am about to get my 400/4 ready for the road (it hasn't seen tarmac since 1983! and I know I will have to strip and overhaul the carbs. Can you tell me where you sourced your kits from please? Also I may need some other parts so any help would be appreciated! Thanks, keep up the good work!

First thing there are lots of kits available on eBay and in the UK David Silver Spares. I would say don't split the carb rack into individual carbs as most of the the refurb can be done from the carb block once removed from the engine.

My Honda 400 four had been off the road for 16 years, and all I did was to remove the float bowls and thoroughly clean all the original brass work very carefully, making sure all the pin holes are clean, then fitted new O rings and float bowl gaskets, that way you shouldn’t upset the synchronisation, then I clean out the fuel tank and sealed it, and fitted a new fuel tap filter + a in-line filter to fuel pipe, the bike started up first time and it runs great, now when I lay it up for winter i add fuel stabiliser to a full tank of fuel run the engine to make sure the float bowls are full of fuel and stabiliser, then once a week I turn on the fuel to make sure the float bowls say full of fuel all winter, and after been laid up for 6 months it starts up no problem. I don’t run the engine at all for the hole 6 months. It always works for me.⚙️🔩🔧👍
