Links in description for the three part build. Building this 400EX trail quad project was a lot of fun and showed us why the machine was so well received when it debuted back in 1999. While the end price was a little higher than we expected we feel the machine was well worth the investment and was still far less expensive than buying a new machine. We hope you enjoy the video.

Probably the most do it all sport quad of all time. Things are awesome not to mention dang near indestructible. Honda is really letting the community down not producing new ones. I know personally I’d take on more debt for a modern 400ex

I remember my first time seeing a 1999 Honda 400ex. Nothing was like it at the time! Now, this project cost does compete with much newer (still used) Raptor 700's though, food for thought.

Question did the new throttle and clutch cables make the throttle and clutch any lighter? Is it worth it
@ATVonDemand7 ай бұрын
Hit me the pull a little lighter and smoother. It's way less expensive than having one break on a trail ride and ruin your weekend.

And you could do that if you don't mind riding an ATV with some bent parts and the bearings that are going bad that will only continue to degrade and inevitably wear out other parts. Or you could spend more on an ATV that needs nothing and pay more for it. We obviously spent some money to protect the machine. We would do that for any new or used quad. If you don't mind smashing your lower frame rails flat that's up to you. Bottom line is, this this sport is not cheap. But this AYV, upgrades and all costs less than the mountain bike I am currently riding for prospective

Could I put a set of used trx450 front shocks on pretty cheap would have been a way better Improvement over the stabilizer and the handlebars
@ATVonDemand8 ай бұрын
Compared to the handlebars, maybe. Better shocks will not take the place of a steering stabilizer. They do two different things
@onewisedre8 ай бұрын
@@ATVonDemand I just meant dollar per dollar the trx450 front shocks would of been a better decision on a budget quad build to improve the handling. I'm well aware of what a steering stabilizer does lol. You just seem to waste money in the wrong spots on this build.

I had a 400EX years ago… I’ll give it a yes and a no. When it ran, it was a great bike…. But I had no reverse and then cold weather. It was hard to start…. Not to mention typical Honda cold blooded as hell… sold it and bought a utility 4 x 4

No machine is perfect. Overall it was a good one though. Hope your enjoying the 4x4.
@brianfl339168 ай бұрын
Old reliable. Wish Honda would get back in the game and bring back at least 1 quad. A fuel injected 500cc that takes the reliability of the Raptor and handling of the YFZ into one reliable package would be fantastic and sell like hot cakes. I just don’t see Honda doing though. EPA regulations are getting tougher and every manufacturer seems to be sticking to the high margin SXS market.

I think you nailed it on all accounts.

Why not just use the same engine that they are using for the 450we dirt bike engine? Just make minimal changes and it’d be fine imo
@brianfl339168 ай бұрын
@@erichemmelgarn4623 that could be an option but most quad riders are trail riders. The Raptor 700 is low end torque engine that doesn’t require keeping a certain rev range to be happy. It’s a good everyday quad. I just think 700 is way overkill for most people. The 450 engines are basically what people race and have totally different characteristics. The YFZ and Raptor are different beasts. Maybe Honda could utilize the NX500 engine.
@erichemmelgarn46238 ай бұрын
@@brianfl33916 I don’t know much about that engine. I just wish they would make a new one. A 500 with reverse would be cool.
@brianfl339168 ай бұрын
@@erichemmelgarn4623 I don’t either. But when Honda made their 700 sport quad they basically used an engine from one of their motorcycles. That’s why it was so quiet.

sucks yamaha never made a 400cc quad.. like honda did or suzuki did.. like its yamaha warrior/raptor 350, then honda trx400 then suzuki ltz400.. for good trial quads but like wish yamaha used a 400cc engine of what ever moto/trail bike they had into a quad... just finished the video 3k ? the quad cost you 3k? holy shit honda trx400ex (not road legal so no papers) are 2000€ here and i find that expensive cause they are no wildly commun not like suzuki ltz400 you can get around 2500 -3200€, and road legal model with licence plates 4000€ ish i tought trx400ex cost 1500$ in most of america? 3000$ seems hella expensive for something u needed to replace so much stuff... ah oki yes you can find them for less, makes sense but seen price are different in every region. texas or new york will have complet different prices.. (like mike sabo and 2vintage) mike sabo bought a honda trx250r in not mint condition it cost him like 4k or more i forgot it was like 1000$ more then 2vintage got his. while 2vintage bought 2 fo them who ran great and were fully equiped for less

A similar machine could probably be found for around $2,500 If you shop for it. If we put this back on the market as is Now that it needs nothing we would expect to get around.$3,500 -#4,000 for it. You rarely get out of a machine in dollars.What you put into it. However in fun we think we'll get every penny back out.
