For what it is, you guys did a great job. You limited it to what you were interested in doing and covered a lot of details. You kept the budget so small that it did not hurt to do it. Your car looks far better than it did. You spent time with your nephew that he will never forget. In the end, what more could you want? Congratulations on doing something most people would never even consider trying. You guys have my respect.

This is a good way to learn how to paint cars when you're starting. I used to spray people's cars for free in the 80s . After the 4th or 5th Rust-Oleum job someone actually bought me a real automotive paint from a paint store. After using real paint I started to get pretty good . I probably painted over 200 cars now
@79thproductions7 жыл бұрын
+bondovwvw thanks, i will start using good paint soon.
@creak927 жыл бұрын
Proper automotive paint is the way to go but don't use modern water based paints, they won't work well for home gamers. I used 2K acrylic paint (paint+hardener) on a project truck this summer, it results in a much more scratch resistant surface than 1K paint and dries fast depending on the hardener you use. But everything is better than the usual rattle can stuff that won't last.

I am a pro painter and started using an airless paint gun ... an electric spray gun will give you even better results with no wait for the small compressor to build up air dry spots ... keep going ... if you ever want pearls / flakes / night glows / fluorescent pigments ... 180 selections here ... just mix it in with your clear coat ... also , if wanting a very nice gloss finish while learning ----- mix a small 10% quantity of paint in with the clear coating , which does come in handy while using rust -oleum type products ... keep on ...
@yakuachbach60835 жыл бұрын
Did you mean mix 10% clear coat into the paint? I'm confused

This is a pretty nice tutorial for anyone trying to paint their first car on a budget with limited resources. Nice step by step, everything is in focus and in order, Even though it's a cheap paint job, it does add curb appeal; being a uniform color, but is also will stop any more rust from appearing for a while. Kudos

Only thing (apart from what KingKatRider says) is that I'd be cautious about shooting clear over Rustoleum. Can't say from experience, but I'd hate to have the clear hit and wrinkle up all the paint because of a nasty chemical reaction.

It looks good. I thought I was the only one using Rustoleum to paint cars. I used semi gloss black Rustoleum on my 40 Ford pickup. I called it my $8.00 paint job because that's what a quart of paint cost. I thinned it with a quart of lacquer thinner. 50/50 mix. It looked real good and people were surprised when I told them what it was. Professional body men thought I was lying. "You can't paint a car with Rustoleum" One tip though. If you get a scratch don't use the spray can to touch it up. It will match for a while but the sun will oxidize it and you'll have a gray spot on your black paint. I convinced two other guys in my club that Rustoleum is the low budget paint trick. It still looks good after 4 years. I also painted a Geo Metro convertible with sunflower yellow rustoleum. None of the local stores carry quarts of Rustoleum anymore and I have another truck to paint. Maybe I can find it online.

As I'm getting ready to do a Rustoleum paintjob, I learned a lot from this. It was good to see the trusty palm sander doing the prep work instead of a fancy DA. It was good to see the Harbor Freight airbrush and to see where you hooked in a moisture absorber above the regulator(?) Makes me think I'm on the right track. Also good to see that you used "fancy" masking paper instead of old newspaper--keeps me from making a mistake. I'd be interested in seeing you do some kind of color sand or cut and buff to this once the paint is dry. That seems like the key to taking an inexpensive paintjob to the next level.
