@@DTSupstateNY depends mainly on the paint you used rather than if you painted a surface incorrectly. overspray is a relatively common occurrence if you are inexperienced. which doesnt take a year to visually be noticed

Painting can be pretty intimidating and this video was quite helpful. The sealer vs no sealer was a question I had floating around my head so it was nice to see an explanation on that. I didn't completely follow the reasoning behind primer being better than seal for the inexperienced. Any idea? Seems like sealer is just a short cut to save a day of cure time/sanding but the function is the same? I'm wondering what an inexperienced person (me) is likely to do better with primer or screw up with sealer.

Thanks for sharing these incredibly resourceful videos. Paint correction guys like myself who often deal with cutting and polishing resprays can really benefit from understanding the process and products involved in the paint they're working on. Understanding substrates, primer/sealers, and variations of base colors, solvents, and hardeners is important even for the guys who aren't doing the actual painting. Knowing what you're working with helps in deciding what approach is the most efficient and effective at improving the paint finish after a respray. Factors like environment temp, hardener types, and time between coats that play a role with issues like solvent pop/pinholes/fisheyes can be a real source of frustration when the issues can't be resolved. Excessive texture and shrinkage/diebacking in the top coat can often be fixed but these types of issues could have been avoided with the proper technique and knowledge as you've shown. Understanding how many coats and how to lay down thicker high solids vs thinner low solids and knowing how to reduce the dust in a spray environment means less finishing work after the paint job. The little tricks you mentioned like making your work environment wet to avoid dust and extending the flash time when waiting for a 3rd coat can be huge in getting the finish looking as clean and flat as can be right off the gun. No one wants to spend countless hours with multiple stages of sanding, denibbing, removing runs, etc when it can be avoided in the booth.

21:22 (I had already worked for over a year in a high production shop prepping airport ground support equipment) I'm blown away at how thorough this instructor is. I worked for a Maaco way back in the 1990's for new franchise owners and they were really gung-ho on providing training for us young guys. Those trainers were thorough like this and I think we all came away with a good working knowledge of how to do our jobs prepping cars for the booth. Excellent video!

I took once worked at maaco( although I usually won't admit it.. hopefully you learned by now that maaco is a cheap paint job and doesn't last very long. The way that Brian does things is the way to follow. Brian's process is very thorough and high quality paint job which will last a long time, not trying to be negative about your experience, just wanted to make sure you know there's a huge difference between the two.

Your technical explanation behind these videos is great. I say the same thing for clear first coat just get a full seal, then second coat go for the wet wet finish.

Oh yea. Some paint companies say spray the first coat the way you want it to look finished but honestly that’s not really practical. I believe the reason behind it is because they want the mil build.

@@PaintSociety most of our clears over here at speedokote they only recommend 2 medium coats. I've done up to 4 coats with the smr42(42% solids) but that's only beneficial if you plan on doing heavy wet sanding and polishing. At the end of the day it's really all down to the user!

I believe it does matter what order you add your reducer and hardener. I was always taught hardener first then reducer. The ratios can vary between the two and you wanna make sure your mixture is properly incorporated

Really depends. Check the TDS, most will tell you specifically what order to mix. Some products need to be thinned prior to activated and vice versa.

Respirators are cheap... 50$ can get you a 3M facemask with eye shield that is so good it's like normal breathing. I don't see why 50$ would be a sticking point when the paint alone will cost more than that not including the sanding tools and more. Tools can get added or replaced. Lungs cannot. Protect them.

I personally would never do any paint work without a sealer especially on a complete, if for no other reason a sealer will be your best bet to prevent die back, and always use the slowest reducer and hardener you can on a complete, I also many times would use a tack rag, very gently, on the masking areas of the windows, on today's modern high build clears a third coat can actually cause surface defects and really isn't needed, but always read the paint manufacturers application procedures and don't mix different paint brands together if possible, try and use the materials within a brands system, that job came out pretty nice for being in a garage with no filtered intake air, it's a good thing that was a small car, not enough room for anything bigger, every one of your tips is spot on and you gave a lot of very important information in this video, this has to be the best channel on KZbin for people wanting to get in to automotive refinishing.

I like what you said at the end. Don't overthink it, it's just paint. I'm nervous about painting my own car but when I'm doing metalwork (my preference) and my brother is helping with the welding he gets a bit nervous. I tell him it's just sheet metal, no big deal. So what you said helps me going in with the thought of painting my car. And I noticed you didn't tack off the masking on the windows. That would hold dust so I'm curious why not. Great video. I plan to shoot it the same color "Go Mango" that my 2005 Dodge Daytona 1500 is. Yea, I hear yeah, I have No imagination but I get so many comments on my Hemi truck. I really like how you emphasize making your environment clean because that is one of the most important parts and often overlooked as well as the time of day because bugs seem to be attracted to fresh paint of any kind - bugs are bad for paint jobs lol. I use a side bucket with a dab of soap to give me an extra lubed dip if I wish to use it, works good when you are sanding near critical body lines without a block, by hand, to get surgical. It will help your sandpaper last longer and keep the surface clean.

I’m spraying my car now starting with the bumper had the base coat down to a tea but messed the clear coat up I’ve got a quite a bit of orange peel bud after watching your vidz I realised I didn’t have it on the right settings the droplets were to big so I’m sanding it down now and will go again this weekend thanks to your videos I’ve learnt hell of a lot the guns set up properly now but I’m going to buy a different one for the clear coat I want it spray as light as possible thank you for these vids giving me the confidence to spray my car rather than pay someone, I’m not worried about a perfect finish as long as it passable I’ll be happy you’re a god send 🎉

SO about 8 months ago i said i would love to work in a paint shop. So i did and i gotta say I absolutely... hated it. LOL being on commission and only being the R&I guy sucks .. I literally lost about 3k in 7 months. From optioning to skip a week or 2 or 5 w/o pay and load it up on the following week..Money is good when you get it. But over all i 100% hate the pay system and wouldn't go back not even to be a "paint" helper BUT i plan on doing this on my own vehicles and your videos help refresh my I-car training i got at my local community College

Brian, that's about the best video for explaining the whole process. Thanks for the time you put in. Maybe some paper on the garage floor to keep any overspray and dust from bouncing up when near the bottom of the car panels.

Ive been painting cars professionally for 15 years. I use a titan 440 with a graco contractor gun. No buffing necessary.

This video helped me a lot I’m 15 and i got a audi with really bad paint I was going to wrap it myself but I saw paint was a lot easier for me so im doing that and this video was very helpful it turned out great
