To Ben Josey: I have a 2001 honda 9.9 HP. I had to put the shifter in reverse, which drops the shaft down, to get better access to the link nut to screw it off the shaft. Also, I had five screws attaching my lower head two on each side and one long on at the rear. Without this great video I would have never attempted this fix.

I plan on "going thru it" in the next few weeks, and your video was absolutely fantastic in regards to the water pump. Great video, but I'm not sure it applies to my Honda. I'm confused about the 9.9 Honda Outboards. I'm guessing they may have 2 completely different 9.9 designs? (One being an 8.0hp / 9.9hp design and the other being a 9.9hp / 15hp?) I can find references to a 9.9 paired with each of the other two-- the 8 and the 15, but nothing seems to discuss there being two totally different 9.9's. I have a very different-looking (compared to the video) Honda 9.9 (2006) model which matches up with a BF/BFP8D and BF/BFP9.9D Honda (factory) Shop Manual. (It looks smaller and curvier.) The Honda directions say to remove the prop and prop shaft before dropping the lower gear case assembly. I'm wondering why. Looks like a good way to mess up something I don't need to take apart, but I also want to avoid causing a problem if there's really a reason to pull those parts before I try to separate the gear case. This outboard has no more than 10 hours on it, but has never had the impeller changed or any service done-- it has mostly been sitting in storage. I think Honda recommends changing the impeller every two years, and I'm certain I don't want to be out on the water with a 10-year-old impeller waiting to self-destruct. I need a fresh impeller and new fluids in it before we try and do anything else to check it out. Any suggestions?

The walk through was great. You left out the compressed air portion. Which direction would you blow the potential vane remains? From the bottom when you have the lower unit off or through the tell tale water jet portion?
@DRaysShop11 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watchin', it's been 20 years since I've worked on one of those, but they were a pain back then! lol The linkage disconnects on the top of the shifter shaft, and if I remember correct, I would clamp a pair of vise grips to the barrel nut, and spin the lower unit to thead it off, just count the rounds, so to get it back correctly. hope you need nothing more than an impeller, the plastic housings are prone to failure and no longer available :(

Great video, thanks! Few questions since I'm a noob: 1) Can I do this repair while the gear oil is full in the lower unit? 2) Does it matter what type of grease I use when reassembling the water pump? I have some white lithium that I used to grease my winches when servicing, will a very light coating of this work? Also, should I be careful to avoid getting grease on any specific components within the water pump housing, or is everything fair game so long as it's a light coat? 3) Do you recommend anything specific for cleaning all of the reusable water pump components? (e.g. mineral spirits okay or too harsh?)

When I was put the lower unit back on, the copper water tube fell out. I cant tell how it was secured to the adapter plate. Does it just "shove" back in place? Doesnt seem like that would hold. I dont see any pieces that I do not have on the Mercury diagram.
