Great review, I’ve just purchased a new ES DCT in tri colour with full luggage. It’s due to turn up next week and I’m looking forward. I was leaning towards a manual but I ended up choosing the dct, due to doing more touring than off-road, hopefully I don’t regrets it.

Like you, I love my AT. First observation for me is the higher MRP is now so close to some serious kit (GS1250 etc), I would need to evaluate carefully before buying this model. Love it all the same. Great job, Mr Fish, Head of Honda Sales UK!

Totally cool approach to review a bike. Emotions, feelings over specs. I do not say spec are not important, of course they are. But being frustrated because the other bike has more power is plain unnecessary. We actually should drive a bike first, feel it, then look the specs papers afterwards to eventually confirm what we just experienced or not. Bravo!

I have a rather new 2018 ATAS and as yet have not taken it off road much (that's the plan though; more off road). I have only ever ridden smaller dirt bikes till this one and I have to say, I love the bike! I am 5'11" and about 200lbs to where I am just a bit tippy-toed with the seat in the upper position. I tried the lower one and I can stand more comfortably with the bike, but for long riding stretches my legs hurt on the lower setting. This new one would probably be just right for my legs, but I have only had the bike for eight months and no way will my wife entertain any ideas of replacing it. Nice review, even if you are biased. It's hard not to be with these bikes, cheers!

Cracking review mate best one yet and I’ve been watching a few to get an idea of the bike. Did you ever test ride the 2018 ATAS ? Be interesting to know what you think in comparison to that. I have had the 2017 Africa twin and changed to a 2018 Africa twin adventure sport and the difference is night and day. I absolutely love it. The best way to describe it is everything that needed improving on the 2016/17 model got done. Anyway cheers for the vid pal have a good one 🏍💨🍺

Nice review Mr Fish. Like you already know, i am still dreaming about a future CB650X or a smaller Africa Twin between 600-800cc with a 19 inches front wheel. The new Moto Morini X-Cape 650 look great. I wish a future CB650X would have a similar design. I think i will wait to buy the future improved version of the V-Strom 650 XT in 2021, because i may wait to much years or forever to get a future CB650X or a smaller Africa Twin.

Test rode an AT with the DCT and a Gold Wing. Same road, same amount of time. I was 70 at the time and riding what I thought a very comfortable bike, the Indian Chieftain. Still had problems with a sore ass or sore back on whatever I’d test rode before. That was still the case with the Gold Wing. Not so with the AT. The AT was the first motorcycle I’d ridden that was comfortable stock. I’m 72 now and on trips longer than 200 miles one way, I just throw on an old Air Hawk cushion I’d purchased some years before and I’m good to go. No back problems and ass ache. I’m lovin’ the DCT and the AT. Easy to ride off road and fun to ride in the twisties. Comfortable on the long hauls. I enjoy your enthusiasm, wit, the content and dialog of your videos immensely. You’re a bright spot in the Trump induced eclipse here across the pond.

For tall long leg riders the AT is big and comfy, I added a custom seat to my 2017 AT to make it even better. I’m surprise you didn’t find the gold wing comfortable with that big flat seat?
@rickseibel5904
@rickseibel5904 4 жыл бұрын
Old Timer - I too was somewhat surprised the AT being more comfortable. Maybe the fact I’m a quirky 72 y.o. and the ergonomics of the AT just happen to suit me to a “T”. My arthritic hands, which motivated trying the DCT, are in love with that enjoyable and versatile transmission. Contrary to what one may think, I find it adds fun to the whole riding experience. I’m as enthusiastic about the AT as Fish.

One question... How are you surposed to wheelie the bike or lift the wheel with a DCT when doing hard terrain? I have a NC 750 DCT and never tried to wheelie it but the next upgrade is the Africa Twin. Is there a button to lift the wheel without having to just power over obstacles?

@@florme6494 I am a huge Honda fan as I grew up on one. Also had '87 xt 600 Tenere. The new Yamaha T7 is "devoid" of technology which might not be such a bad thing. It's just got switchable ABS. I think the only problem with this bike is poor wind protection and hard seat. If you are traveling long distances those are the things matter the most appart reliability. Gs has better comfort and wind protection but is less reliable and expensive for servicing. So it is always tradeoff.

@@Mrfish2015 Well yes it is providing there are no reliability issues, yet. Touch wood. Still think these bigger adventure bikes like the AT are no more than glorified sport touring bikes. Most won't go up a kerb let alone off road. If they were taken off road then most riders wouldn't be able to handle them with their heavy weight, nearly 240kgs, before even putting themselves and all their luggage on. I guess they are great in places like Australia, Canada, the States, South Africa, Mongolia or South America where they have lots of space, rugged wilderness and rough trails, but here in the UK no. This is why I like the lighter KTM 790 Adv with it's lower centre of gravity fuel tanks makes it much lighter to ride and more nimble. I guess the major advantages of the bigger heavier 1000+cc "adventure" bikes are comfort and a sit up commanding riding position over olde traditional sport touring bikes where perhaps you are more leant forward and legs tucked up. Honda with the AT until this latest model have been so far behind the opposition in terms of spec it was embarrassing really. I mean come on Honda get your act together. They've only just added cruise control! How about illuminated switch gear? I know BMW don't offer it on their models, yet, but Triumph and KTM do. It should mandatory now with all the buttons to press. Fumbling around in the dark feeling for the right button whilst still trying to stay upright and not get killed is rather inconvenient. It was ok to have a very limited and dated spec when Honda's price was lower, well it wasn't actually, but now they've bumped the price of this bike up to play on the same table as the big boys Honda really need to start giving top spec and listening to what people want. Other manufacturers seem to be able to do this better to varying degrees. Just my 2ps worth. I don't doubt the new AT is capable, just that there are now more capable and more fun bikes. Sorry. Thanks for replying.

@@alexmorgan3435 The 790 is 460+ lbs, maybe 30lbs less than the base AT - not exactly a feather LOL. A T7 might be more up your alley, or the lighter yet a cb500x.

@@anxiousappliance Nope, the Tenere 700 is a much more basic bike than the 790 ADVs and don't know about the CB500X. If I wanted even less weight for full on off road I probably go for a KTM EXC TPI 300 or 500.

@@Mrfish2015 On serious note, it is a very deep rabbit hole, chasing the next, newest, "better" (fill in the blank) - I face it with cameras; which arguably, can offer more bang for the money per upgrade than most motorcycles. Once in the real world, for most of us, our skill levels prevent us from seeing the maximum benefit of bike or camera (so choosing a bike because it's a pretty colour is probably at least as valid as any other reason!). Hey, maybe down the road Doble's will give you a deal you can't refuse on a year end model.......

Do you plan to review it off-road? Hate to say it but it seems Adventure bikes are following the course that SUV's took... they began as hybrid offroad vehicles and are now relegated to grocery-getters driven by soccer moms. Thus, never going offroad, but holding the poser image they are an adventurer. My bud has an AT and I kid him he should of just got a Goldwing as he never really tests the 10 inches of suspension travel that 550 pound beast has offroad....
