You have the upper cap all the way screwed in on the gas cap. It's suppose to be open when running. That's why it's stalling on you.

The engine seems to have multiple issues. In my case, the choke valve wasn’t closing properly, causing the mixture to run excessively rich.

Main jet in the carb is partially plugged. You should clean it.

Looks like Christine said, the computerised oil level checksystem thinks you are out of oil when you tilt the machine, and therefore cuts down the rpm to protect Engine. // Göran

Jelte Wolters Ik had het zelfde met mijn nieuwe Honda BF6. Na lang zoeken denk ik het probleem te begrijpen: De kap van de motor is aan de bovenkant luchtdicht afgesloten, aan de onderkant wordt de lucht voor de carburateur aangezogen. De uitlaatgassen van de motor borrelen bij de schroef naar boven, worden in de vooruit stand naar achteren weg gestuwd maar stijgen in de vrijloop of achteruit stand langs de achtersteven omhoog en worden opgezogen door de motor waardoor deze geen kracht meer heeft of zelfs afslaat. Ik heb het opgelost door de gaten aan de onderkant dicht te plakken en door in de bovenkant van de kap gaten te boren.

En is het probleem daarmee opgelost, of was dat het toch niet? En waar heb je de gaten geboord?

Hebben jullie alle een BF6? Wat is de productie jaar van jullie motor...zie typeplaatje, eerste cijfer zal hoogstwaarschijnlijk een 6 zijn (van BF6) en tweede cijfer zou de productie jaar moeten zijn. Ik wil namelijk deze maand ook een BF6 kopen maar na het zien en lezen van dit begin ik toch wel te twijfelen. Daarom hoop ik dat jullie meer info kunnen geven over productie jaar en of het inmiddels is opgelost. Alvast reuze bedankt!

It pays of sometimes to read the instruction manual and repeat step by step starting procedure....as Dan San has mentioned. Give us an update please......

It’s the low oil level sensor, it puts it in limp mode and limits rpm to 2200 when it senses low oil.

Yes but not 5hp motor they dont have any sencors

I have a 2006 BF5 and has the oil pressure sensor and light as well. The BF4, 5 and 6 are all identical engines except the 4 and 5 are HP restricted by carb size/restrictor and some say different cams as well.

@@CommentRedacted This is not correct. The 4,5,6 differ by having different carburetors, ignition coils and props. Internally they are the same except the 4 has a different cam. I upgraded my 5 to a 6 by swapping carb, coil and prop. You need the 6hp carb for more fuel/air at 6krpm you need the 6hp coil for 6300rpm vs 5800rpm on the 5hp coil and lower pitch prop from the 6hp to actually get into 5500+rpm on the water.

I have the same motor which is brand new. My problem is even more strange. If the motor cover is on it's very hard to make it start (10-15 attempts) and when it starts it works like on the video (very bad) for about 10 seconds and dies. When I remove the motor cover is starts perfectly. When it works without cover and I put the cover back on it starts stalling and dies unless I remove the cover again. I talked to a Honda guy by the phone and he tells me that this is not possible and the motor cover has nothing to do about how the motor works. Ok but its a fact. How did you solve your problem?

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF OIL IN THIS MOTOR CHECKING OIL WHEN MOTOR HAS BEEN SEETING OVER NIGHT MOTOR SHOULD BE IN A LEVEL POSTION SEE IF THIS HELPS I HAVE WORKED ON LOTS OF THESE THEY ARE A VERY GOOD MOTOR WHEN SERVICED RIGHT GOOD LUCK

Hi Martin. My new BF6 has exactly the same problem -it doesn't run in gear with the cover on, but runs better without the cover on. Have you found a solution for this problem?

Thanks for posting this. I had been looking high and low for a BF6 for the back of my 10' coleman crawdad.....i even contacted Honda Marine directly asking why i couldnt find one and inquiring as to where i could locate one, and they responded a day later stating that they are "Temporarily Not Available for sale" which led me to be even more confused because of all the hype surrounding its launch in 2016. Now that i have the extra cash to buy it, it doesnt exist anymore lol- Anyone reading this have any suggestions? im replacing an 86 evinrude 6hp, i built a subframe out of unistrut to reinforce the frame of the boat.....where its about a year later have you purchased something else?

he problem is from production to honda closed valves 0.5 it is 0.10-0.15 it corrected and it works properly

Thanks. They did offer to refund my purchase. I told them I'd rather have a fix and am willing to wait.

Todd in Toronto good to hear grab a Suzuki 6hp lightest and most cc next to the Yamaha which is 8 lbs heavier. I did!

That's great! I hope your Suzuki runs flawlessly! One of the reasons I went with the Honda was the reduced vibration; its barely there and why I'll wait for the fix.

OIL PRESSURE INDICATOR LIGHT GOES OFF AND ENGINE SPEED IS LIMITED TAKING CARE OF UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS OIL PRESSURE INDICATOR LIGHT If the throttle is closed suddenly after full throttle operation, engine speed may drop below the specified idle rpm, and that could activate the engine protection system momentarily. If low oil pressure activates the engine protection system, stop the engine, check the engine oil level (p. ), and add oil if needed. If the engine protection system remains activated after 30 seconds, return to the nearest boat landing, and have the outboard motor inspected by an authorized Honda marine dealer. With the engine oil at the recommended level, restart the engine. If the lubrication system is OK, the green indicator light should come on within 30 seconds, and the engine will respond normally to throttle grip operation. If oil pressure becomes low, the green indicator light will go off. If you are at cruising speed, engine speed will decrease gradually. Low oil pressure may be the result of a low engine oil level, or there may be a problem with the engine lubrication system.

I have owned numerous outboards...I also bought Honda outboard thinking I wasn't going to any issues at all. I have a couple other Honda powered engines as well, however....EXACT SAME THING!!!!

Hi Todd, I bought the same unit yesterday and had the same problem... Till I realized that the choke wasn't in all the way. When I put the choke back in it came back to life. However it's really under powered as far as I am concerned. Does anyone know if these things can be returned? I think I'd rather try my luck with a Yamaha.

Why don't you use what all Japanese professional fisherman are using - Tohatsu. Tohatsu is made in Japan, and Yamaha in China. Just to let you know....

My brand new engine did the same thing, I just got back from the dealer, it turns out Honda put the sticker on the wrong side of the engine. It says this side up, which is laying the engine down on the two tabs that protect the shiftier. This causes the carburetor to be on the down side instead of being on the upside while laying down. Oil runs from the oil reservoir into the carburetor causing making it difficult to start and run half speed and rough like the engine in this video. So if you follow instructions, place it down on the shiftier protectors you are running oil into your carburetor. Causing these problems like described.

Hey man I just recently bought Honda 4-stroke 5 horsepower I haven't used it yet and it has it had oil in it yet if I turn it on the opposite side when it's not in use do you think it will prevent trouble with the engine I hope I did not waste 2000. Thanks bud.

I transported my engine as described on the tabs laying down in the trunk of my car on top of my inflatable boat. The same thing happened to me. Oil all over my boat. Took a bit of cleaning. Just wondered if turning onto the other side for transportation cures this problem?

I also have a brand new BF6 that I tried yesterday for the first time. No power, low rpm. For me it looks like it has the same power as my previous BF2.3. I have it on a Dinghi 2.90m and the speed at full trottle is 8-9 km/h, same as with the BF2.3 I see the same at this movie, the engine is not able to go in higher rpm's. For my opinion the impeller is too big. Like you go with your car uphill in a too high gear. Please advise

Maybe after sketch increase octane additive for gasoline or increase trobleshoting spark plug low cost (exeded voltaje echlin or vs spark plug modern champion field open woodward shielded oil used monograde mobil sae 50 no temp disipe only changue lower oilpan exchangue

This spring (2018) Honda took the motor back and the dealer refunded my purchase. They don't have a fix and have stopped selling them in Canada. Its too bad as I did like the motor/features.

I purchased this model back end of 2018,I have tried four fishing trips each time it has let me down.l have taken it back to the dealer three times he runs it in a tank and says nothing wrong with that,numerous phone calls and emails to Honda and the best they can come up with is they will replace the engine with a new one but I have a pay £300 so much for a six year warranty at present it is with the dealer and it looks like I’ll have to go down the legal route, I think it’s a case of Honda used to be good

The vent on the cap is open although it may not look it. The problem happens on both the internal AND external fuel connections. I'm still waiting for an answer from Honda...

Here’s my opinion, I see your using a portable tank, when you leave the vent screw open on the internal tank that might cause air to reach the carburetor, maybe that is causing the problem. Its worth a shot to close the portable tank valve and try running it.

Still waiting for Honda's tech support to call me back with a fix so I can take it in. Apparently I'm not the only one with this issue and they don't seem to know for sure what's causing it. It's still usable; just have to angle it up.
