I already owned the old CB300F (not sold in the UK). After watching your vid, I test rode this. Then today I bought it - and have spent the last 8 hours carving up Sydney on it. I'm still grinning from ear to ear. It's a rambunctious little red rascal. It absolutely is a grown-up Grom. Bloody effing brilliant. Cheers from Australia!

The seat's pretty crap though. I'm only 70kg and I find it very firm too. Honda claims a seat height of 799mm exactly...so I'm pretty sure they had a meeting where they decided the seat height had to be under 800mm, no matter how thin and crappy that meant the seat would be just to meet that target.

Hi mate. I was in the market here in Sydney, I'm a bit torn about the old 300f and this as they're both available and the old one's offering me a finer pocket balance, you reckon I could still get the 300f and be alright? I'm personally more in love with this design.

I test rode this and my oh my, what a fun bike! I rode it in The City at around 3pm on a weekday. Despite traffic it was immense fun. It is very agile, has enough power for city riding, and is simply so much fun. For a daily commute I would recommend this to put a smile on your face on the way to work.

2 years ago i've started to be interested in bikes. I'm now 36 and still don't have the A license yet. I feel like it's the right time to get it so hopefully next april i'll do it and get my first bike. 2 years ago i've watched so many reviews of so many bikes that i just can't count. Only one was sitting in the back of my mind without remembering who was the reviewer and what was the bike he reviewed. As i'm getting closer to my ride of choice i've stumbled upon this video again and i knew right away that this is the video i remembered the most. Funny enough, the bike reviewed in it is the one i really love now and probably will be the first one for me. And another funny fact is, that you're the only guy out there that exactly fits my body (6,2 feet and just a little bit over 16 stones). Thank you very much for this review and thank you for doing this. I really needed someone like you on the internet. Subscribed. Ride safe!

Great video mate. I’m 47 and recently bought my first bike, a Honda Monkey. Loving it, great fun. When that’s paid off I’m gonna keep the Monkey and buy one of these. I don’t need or want anything bigger or faster than the CB300R - my reactions aren’t what they used to be so it’s for the best I think! I live in Bournemouth and drive a car to work. These little bikes are just for me to have a bit of fun on at weekends. Job done. Only have my CBT at the mo but will do my full licence. Don’t see much point doing the A2 thing as it’s pretty much the same as doing the full licence anyway, it’s just a bigger bike.

I've had mine for a few weeks now. This review helped my decision to pull the trigger on the CB300R. Thank you Mr. Fish; this bike is AWESOME! Absolutely finely crafted little bike. I'm really impressed with the light weight, refined handling feel, excellent suspension, nice and strong (ABS) brakes, all LED lighting, and excellent looks. Perfect? No. I wish it had a larger capacity fuel tank, and a quick shifter, and a slipper clutch, a tail tidy, more HP and more torque. Don't get me wrong, it's quick and pulls great for what it is and how little it cost. It is as close to perfect as I hoped for. I love the little bugger. Next, for me, the CB1000R!

I revisited this video to rewatch the walk around section. What I would do to this bike. I would Remove the passenger foot pegs and mounts, remove the rear license plate holder section, remove the passenger seat, making it a single seat, it is a 300 bike I wouldnt take a passenger on this small of a bike anyway, with the passenger seat removed mount the tail lights and license plate up right behind the riders seat, this would make it a single seat, while shortening it up a bit and really clean it up, It may need a small cafe tail cone, between the tail light and single seat.

You just need to be faster than the following to be safe, Fianaced Rover and Disco, Nissan kumquat, Deutschland klein cooper. Small bikes are great a 40mph corner is the same thrill more so with a small bike because you are constantly stratigising and getting technical rather than pooting down to 20 only to open throttle. I've caught plenty of big bikes on the 125 in the corners of course they dissapear on the strights compared to my Micra level POWER! I'm not a great rider but if I jumped striaght on a big bike I'd def be lacking a lot of the skills I have now. 300's just make a fair bit of sense if you're going to be using it as a primary or almost primary mode of transport probaly looking at about £25-30 a month petrol on a 20 mile round commute. Thumpers are great

I Love this Bike!! I'm done with Big heavy Bikes. I had CB350 twin back when i was a teen, and it was a Great Bike! That Bike had 76,000 miles on it when i sold it I rode the schnitz out of it. Since then cb750, a couple liter bikes, Vstrom1000, GL1800 goldwing, several other Goldwings, Big cruisers 1800cc 1500cc. Now i want to get back to my younger Love of smaller, Lighter flickable bikes, that are actually fun to ride. I am very bored with bigger bikes. I think that the 500cc bike weight class moves you over that threshold and into another category or weight class, that looses a Lot in the Fun translation when it comes to riding. Oh and i had a Honda cx500, v twin it was a weird bike.

Smaller capacity bikes can definitely be a lot fun! I haven't ridden either of them, but the light weight of the 300 will make contribute to it not feeling under powered. While the 500 weighing 190kg and only having 47bhp... just on paper that is less fun. If getting a heavier bike with fun in mind and not just as a commuter. More power will be desired.

Great bike. Test rode it today and put my name down for one too. Compared to my KTM 990 SMT, the Honda is tiny. and just like mr fish says; it feels like a bigger Grom….with retro looks. The Honda is so light (143kgs wet) and fun to ride. I'm a 10.5 stone rider (147lb) and it flew along nicely. I've owned a coupe of similar bikes in the past (CB500X and a 2017 Duke 390). The Honda isn't that far off the performance but that's not the point. It's a 'niche' bike, in that it's retro looks will win it's buyers hearts (mine included) over performance. The CB500X is a great sensible bike. The Duke 390 is the ultimate sub 500cc hooligan bike. The CB300R is just the 'Cool' bike. It has bags or character, peppy performance and sounds great. It gets up to 80mph with ease. It handled great in the wet and dry and the Showa suspension felt superb. The gear shift is so soft and easy to use and you'll whizz through the 6 gears in no time. I'm genuinely surprised just how good this bike is. Can't wait for Honda to get my order sorted asap.

Fish , I have to agree with you on a few levels in this review- Smaller bikes are so much more fun around town.. You get to a point where you've gone as fast as you want to and you circle back around to quick , light machines.. unless you are doing a shit ton of highway riding and can only have one motorcycle, under 500 cc machines for short commutes and just for smiles per gallon.. they can't be beaten.. and Honda will probably never be beaten in small engine design .. it's a good looking bike ( once you add a tail tidy and get rid of that ridiculousness holding the plate and a proper aftermarket exhaust) - thank you for reviewing a bike I would never normally think about..

Excellent perspective. What appeals to me about the 300 cc Grom is its weight: only 316 pounds ... 123 pounds less than the CB500X weighing 439 pounds. THAT's what lets it be 'fun'. Weight MATTERS - ALWAYS. i wish more reviewers would (were capable of) try it on dirt/gravel/unpaved roads, where picking up 316 pounds is more 'fun' than picking up 1/4 ton ... when hot, exhausted and thirsty in a 'space suit'.

Love the review! Thinking of getting this but wee bit concerned if taking on short tours. Will probably go to Spain on it twice a year for a few weeks at a time (lightweight, bag strapped on behind me), doing probably 150 miles a day tops. Just concerned could be quite uncomfortable? Any advice appreciated.

looked at the cb300r, nice looking bike, as you said, not very good for pillion, ended up with cb500x, as my first bike, good review, spot on, pricing of bike is good value, think was around 4500 .

Great review. I watched this several times before I bought my CB300R 18 months ago. I've really enjoyed the CB, it's lack of weight makes it great fun without being intimidating. It handles superbly and makes you feel like you're going plenty quick enough. However, for me it's starting to feel a little insubstantial and the modest motor is brilliant when you're in the sweet spot but with only around 1,000rpm between peak torque and peak power it's not the most flexible engine. back roads - superb but if you'd like to do some bigger A roads and motorway, it will sit at 85mph but that's not it's natural habitat. I would encourage people to try one but the shine might wear off...

I'm going back to slower and lighter. The shine of heavy fast bikes has wore off for me. I never go over 80 and I find I'm not taking my bike out as much. I'd prefer something light I can jump on, flat foot and wring the throttle. Only reason I got rid of my ninja 250 was so I could experience more power but then years later I'm downsizing. So this bike could suit me.

Nice review, should call you Mr Enthusiastic, now which is best cb309r or should I buy an MT03 which is 40cc more, both look great but until I pass the test I can't try them both out, based on your video this one looks the better bike.

The muffler is large because it incorporates the catalytic converter. The shift point light can be set by the rider to the desired RPM.

Have one on loan while my 18 CRF250L is in for the gearbox recall. What a great engine, so much peppier and tractable than the 250 engine, if only they would use that 300 engine. Can you ask Dobles if that is on the horizon? Would get one instantly.

Nice bike..bit confused by your CB500 comparisons though. Whilst they are both A2 category this is much lighter. The 500 is really overweight for what it offers and for many, especially smaller/less confident riders this is an important factor that is a make or break to the purchase. As you mentioned at the end of the video the 300 looks a lot of fun (and might be a great 2nd bike) too. Not sure how Honda will market that fact without the 500 seeming a bit worthy but dull, which arguably it is.

A muntjac ran in the road, years ago on a b road, the same type of road as the one you're tanking down on. It just stopped in the road, staring at me. I had long enough (thankfully) to hit the anchors (non abs back then), lock up, ease off anchors and go round him. Thankfully, he didn't move, if he did, well a different story perhaps. Happened so quick, yet weirdly, time to react, as wasn't hairing in. Moral: Things happen fast, even at 50mph on a country lane. Be prepared to stop at a split seconds notice. You'll live to ride another day.
