I need to play this great music in the background when I rebuild my starter as well. It’ll go back together so much smoother

Well done, it answered some of the "end play" issues other rebuild videos didn't cover.

i used this vid as guide to do my CB72...... its a bit different but using the same techniques it was a reasonable guide to doing the CB72 starter motor....lucky for me the bushes and bearings were in good shape and it really just needed a clean up , repacking with grease, make another gasket to protect the brushes from the weather and she's good to go.....yeah i got a 1970 CB175 as well

I put the end cap on a baking tray in the oven at 140c for 20-30 mins and when I checked the bushing was sitting there on the baking tray having removed itself without issue. I was so pleased I wrote a letter to my MP explaining my delight.

My starter won't turn freely before or after the rebuild. Semi turns with pliers until the planetary cap is back on and then it stops up. This was a great vid, but I may go starterless if I can't find a replacement. Rock on CMC. Yall are a great help.

Really nice video but I winced when you pounded on the inner race of the bearing when you removed it. Generally it is frowned upon to hammer the races onto the balls. It damages both in a process called Brinelling. If you could have engaged the outer race with a larger socket that would have been better. Sometimes there is a slot in the shoulder that butts against the outer race so you can drive the bearing out with a screwdriver or punch. Sometimes there is not. Heating as you showed is a great way to reduce or eliminate the amount of force needed.

My thanks on the instruction, as I'm sure my 71 CB-350 hasn't ever had a rebuild on it. The bronze bushings look to be a hurry up and wait item if I've ever seen one. Patience, right?

When placing the gaskets on either side of the planetary gear plate I thought the wider top gasket could possibly make contact with the planetary gear assembly and I'm curious if the gaskets should be in reverse order? Another consideration that I found was that eliminaton of both gaskets makes the overall length of the starter about 5/32" shorter and the mounting bolts to the engine will not line up.

I did this today, or at least tried. When I got it apart the planetary gears had no bushings (2:36). I was like, where are they? The starter had been making this honking sound, like the bearing was completely dry and/or shot, but it was the planetary gears I guess. Bought a used one on ebay and will use the CMC rebuild kit on it.

I'm looking for info on starter solenoids for a CB360s. I replaced mine today, but i'm not sure if i hooked it up right. the bike DOES start, so i'm assuming it's right. my question is: would it start even if the wires were hooked up backwards, like to the wrong terminals?? i connected the colored wires correctly to the harness, but the terminals on top of the new unit had no indication of which side was positive or negative or what. i took a 50/50 chance and just hooked it up how i assumed it would go. but might this cause problems down the road?? thanks!
@Common-motor
@Common-motor 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew, your hunch is right. It won't matter or hurt it if the small wire connections are backward.

The rebuild is not the issue, it’s a “2” on a difficulty scale of 1-10... the issue with most these starters is that the planetary gear plain bearings/bushings are usually shot. Notice how they noted here that there was little grease when they disassembled it?!? Those bushings are NOT included in a rebuild kit and are not a standard size. So, unless you have a roll of oillite and a metal lathe or a friend who works strictly for drinks and/or smiles, you could still be very much “ outta luck”.
