Honda CB400F Simply Looked Perfect, With Just The Right Understated Amount of Chrome

Against such a backdrop of bummers, motorcyclists had one small reason to rejoice one of the Japanese manufacturers finally got it right, That manufacturer was Honda and the motorcycle in question was its exquisite, jewel like CB 400 F. The cafe craze American homage paid to a distinctly European notion was still in full bloom, and a small band of dedicated enthusiasts bought and fitted to their mounts uncomfortable yet racy clip ons and rearset footpegs in hopes of emulating their brethren overseas, where there were no speed limits and everyone rode as hard as they could at all times. Unlike now when corporations employ legions of marketeers to identify and cash in on trends as they develop, some 20 years ago manufacturers responded to trends in somewhat the same way an elephant responds to a mosquito bite, A vague notion eventually registers that something is happening and the response might be neither quick nor entirely appropriate. With the 1975 CB 400 F though Honda nailed the bull's eye. The 400 simply looked perfect, with just the right understated amount of chrome, monochrome paint in blue or red, no stripes, foofraws or furbelows.

I made my living as a despatch-rider on a blue 75 model. Absolutely brilliant and like a scalpel for London traffic, especially once you’ve got Koni‘s and decent fork-springs fitted coupled up with sticky Michelins. The previous Cb350Four was in reality the „expensive to produce“ bike! The 350 was actually a sleeved down 400!!! Please make a note of this as before becoming a despatch-rider I worked as a Honda (Mocheck, anybody remember?) mechanic. The 400/Four didn’t have the 4 exhaust-pipes and was cheaper to produce than the 350/Four but (this is very important!) sold for a higher price than the 350!!! Anyway, they gave at least 60Mpg regardless of how ridden and required minimal maintenance which could be accomplished with basic experience.

I don't know about the US but these sold well in the UK.
