In a time long before KZbin we had to read Bike magazine or MCN to find out about new bikes. In this case it would have been 1975 and the release of the Honda Super Sport CB 550 Four. Although at this time I was ragging about the fields on BSA Bantams and Triumph Tiger Cubs, I was dreaming of bikes such as this Honda. In later years I was to own and ride just about all the fours but could never have dreamed that I would be riding one some 48 years later. After all, the old folks all said they would have rusted away in a few years 😁 Hope you enjoy this blast from the past.

I just picked up one of these to restore and get road ready, always have loved the old Honda bikes. I keep collecting these old bikes because they need to be ridden, they're not relics, they're what built todays bike legacy.

Absolutely gorgeous 👌. For £4500 I'd be tempted by this over the Triumph Tiger restoration project. Yes, you'll have to keep on top of the cleaning but significantly less time than that needed to restore the old Triumph. 😊

I had a couple of Honda 750s and a 400 four, brilliant bikes with all you need and no crap like on modern rubbish, but back then riders were a different breed. Nowadays some modern bikers cant leave the house without 27 rider modes, cruise control and heated everything, ABS is the only worthwhile thing nowadays. That will sell in days.

A work colleague back in the early 70s let me have a borrow of his - a real beauty to ride. That's such a great example and really not expensive. He toured all Europe on it and I believe still has it (bit of a hoarder). I always enjoy these Haywards visits TAYM. Good to hear it's fitted with that indicator reminder - life saver. As a 16 year old, I went to the Colchester Honda dealer every day after school with my mate. The 500/4 sat next to the 750/4 - usually the gold paint ones. The 500/4 was the prettier of the two and likely to offer everything one could want for any UK trip (much as you've said). The 750 was, then, the biggest and probably most refined, sophisticated contender on the market (until the Kettle, and then Z1 hit the shores) - the choice for the intercontinental travellers. Five years later, Mick - a fellow instructor friend - had a personal 550/4. He could ride that to keep with anyone inside (approximately) legal speeds, and probably way beyond. Helped perhaps by the fact that he was an older, experienced Class 1 Traffic bike Officer and rode an R80RT daily. Wherever you wanted to go on the road, he was there already and the 550/4 was as nimble as his wits. He loved his 550/4 and it lacked nothing to give him all the motorcycling anyone could want. It wasn't pristine, had a four into one exhaust, and indeed, the weather was never kind to any chrome lagged Japanese bikes back then. How times have changed, where we believe the 500-600 class is mid, even small capacity...although that may be reverting now with the current crop of offerings. However, the newer mid-range machines offer the performance of the old CB750/4 now.

Yes, times have changed. Gone are the days when motorcycle reviews would read something like "the bike accelerates briskly from a standstill before settling into a steady and comfortable rhythm at motorway speeds, at which speeds it is more than comfortable and capable. While a little bit hefty pulling her in and out of the garage, good steering and suspension make her very nimble once underway. Braking is more than adequate, with a large twin leading shoe front drum and a smaller single cam affair on the rear..." These days it's more like "0- 60 mph in 1.8, top speed 300, trail rake blah blah blah... 15 spot opposing piston Brembos on six foot wide discs..." It tells you nothing. We have lost the plot when it comes to what is "important" on a road going motorcycle. I'm not discounting modern engineering, but for 90% of riders, bikes that were designed and built 40 or 50 years ago are still more suited for everyday use than many of the bikes that you see on the road, today. But hey, why buy a thousand cc bike that's only 195 horse power and weighs two 440 pounds when you can buy a bike that's 196 horse power and ways 439 pounds.

Absolutely! I find the journalistic reviews which conclude a near litre machine is pretty good "however, will struggle two up" to be laughable (those where a 800cc has a 1200cc bigger brother. Aware that the VStroms get similar comments between the perfectly capable 650 against the 1000 and larger ones. We only have to be realistic rather than starry eyed and try, as TAYM has proven again and again, something like a Royal Enfield 650 to experience the essence of motorcycling. No wrestling a large machine around small lanes, no noticeable struggling on dual roads at legal speeds (any extra is a pleasure I can forgo - or take the car), and perfectly capable with two people. We all fall for the bigger bike at some point, and often end up staying there for questionable reasons. I was a proud owner of a 900 sport boxer for many years, but acknowledge the smaller models were just as suitable - and all weighed no more than a modern 650-750. Coming back down to the mid-range has been a revelation for me - and, lamentably, a missed experience for many years. @@davidbrayshaw3529
@davidbrayshaw3529
@davidbrayshaw3529 9 ай бұрын
@@davgb7904 60 years ago, something like the Royal Enfield 650 of today would have been considered a superbike. And in my mind, it still sort of is. It's a 100mph. bike! How much more do you need in the "real world". Yes, there's a place for the big machines. If you do most of your miles on freeways or highspeed roads such as autobahns or you like going on track days, get a big bike, it's probably best for you. But the reality is that the vast majority of riders don't or can't ride their bikes in those circumstances. As a white western male, I've got to say, we get motorcycles all wrong. Throughout the Asias and India, where the true "hardcore" bikers are to be found, they predominantly ride motorcycles that are suited to the conditions that they live in and in accordance with the budget bestowed upon them. Silly westerners like me buy bikes that are least suitable for the conditions that we live in, that we can't afford to operate, and we take out a loan to do it!!! Well not me, at least, and I'm guessing, not you, but you know what I mean. I had a Kawasaki W 800 turn up on my doorstep last week. 47 bhp. Over 200kgs. air cooled, disc/drum and a five speed box. Paid for in full. Why did I choose that model? Experience. The experience I know that I'll have based on the experience that I have had.

Nice bike-I started in 1977 on a Honda 400F-and then a moved to a 1978 750F around 1981 (had many others since)-but those 2 Hondas were reliable and indestructible and could be shifted at or near redline in every gear all day every day without complaint-almost no maintenance--the little 400F-cruised on trips in 6th at 7-8000 rpm --never felt these bikes were stressed in any way-and the exhaust note-cannot be duplicated with being on a great 4 inline--not even my KZ1100 sounded as good to me

Hi TAYM. I stumbled across your channel while researching the Moto Guzzi V7 a while back. I had a 2016 Indian RoadMaster that I adored but at 65 years realized it was perhaps a good idea to downsize a little lol. Anyway. I eventually traded in my RM for the MG and must confess it has rejuvenated my love for motorbikes. It's the first "naked" bike I have ever owned and it's been a blast. This video brought me back to the 70s as well as I had a Honda CB 360T and one of my best friends had the same bike you are riding here (this pal actually taught me how to ride the 360 CB.....my first motorcycle). Just a note to say I've been enjoying your channel....love the area and scenery where you ride. Thanks for sharing!! Cheers Kevin Caledon, Ontario, Canada

Had one from the late 70s until 1996, lived out on the roadside the whole time and was the daily ride to work in all weathers bike, no idea how many miles it did as the speedo cable went every couple of years and wasn't replaced until MOT time, but is was showing 85k. Fitted twin discs, someone gave me some 600cc pistons so had a barrel bored out, had the usual problems with the abuse it got, rear drum cracked, spokes rotted, eventually replaced with Comstars after about 3 sets of spoked wheels, made my own stainless 4 into 1 at work, swinging arm seized and had to be sawn out, made a box section one, got crashed, bent the frame and forks, changed them, eventually sold it on, still running several years ago

Oh Taym when I saw the notification I had palpitations in anticipation of viewing this. I had a cb360 a cb550k not the f like this one. Then a 750/4. The 550 was lighter and nimbler than the 750 but slower but still did not stop me at going everywhere I could at 80 (in the 70s when you could). What I liked is I could rag it all the time. Those clocks same on all my Hondas. That style, performance, the 4 exhausts design, and the sound. I am sorry but these were the best bikes ever built for ethereal pleasure. It properly gave me butterflies. Worth every penny imo. Trouble is now with e10 fuel those carbs will want stripping yearly🙈🙈😢😢as I know to my cost of my last carbed bike with slow running jet gelled up and inside carbs full of congealed crap even after a few months. But if honda rebuilt this with fi I’d sell everything to buy one. They were 50hp and a not so light 204kg but when I owned these bikes the pleasure they gave me. So same bhp ish as an interceptor but for me. Honda all the way. This is my fave vlog of yours Taym and I think I asked previously if you could do some 2nd hand reviews. This has got to help it sell. If not for my not long distance issue with carbs I would have it. One thing I noticed is the exhausts on mine had twin silencers either side? Not like that on this one. Was only onthe k not the super sport f

Loved your review of the CB550, makes much more sense than the 400/4. For me my 16 to 17 years were Suzuki AP50 to GT185 to Honda CX500, therefore nowadays I have a CX500 as my daily bike, it's a 1978 in Blue (the naughty colour!) and I absolutely love riding it. 50 bhp is enough, I'm happy riding it on motorways or A roads and like you said it's not going to get you into too much trouble but has plenty for overtaking when you want it, plus being water cooled and shaft drive it's very smooth. Also the CX is a bit cheaper than the cb550, as most people go for the 4 cylinder bikes or dare I say it two strokes, for me it's V twins, that's why my other bike is a Moto Guzzi. You can't beat the sound of a V twin, just something majestic about it, a bit like a V8 in a car engine. Bikes over 40yrs old make great sense as they are so cheap to insure, free to Tax and no MOT plus change the Oil and filter every now and then and you're sorted, plus if you buy something that was popular in it's day then spares are readily available.

Hiya Mr. Taym. Now that`s a bike, wow what fantastic condition, do you know if it has been a restoration. It is my type of bike, makes you think though doesn`t it, how wrong have the big 4 been to try to better this machine. Only have to look at your comments to see what a lot of us would like to see from Honda. A Japanese Bonnie perhaps?

The nearest modern equivalent I can find to the CB550F is the CB650F which I've owned for 18 months, but I'm looking for an early 1970s CB550 and think it would be great to own the grandson and its granddad. I have had the CB650Z but they are hard to find now with only 14 left in the country and were never as good as the 550 apparently.

I am restoring and reassembling an abandoned '75 cb550f SS. I also have a '78 and '71. On those bikes, the lower engine support bolt that the rider foot pegs also attach to is threaded on both ends. This '75 parts bike seems to have a hex bolt head on the left side of that bolt - not threaded. I looked the part up on the CMS parts site and sure enough it shows the lower engine support bolt having a hex head on one side. Can you confirm on your cb550f?

Didn't everyone over 45 have a Honda 350-400-550-750 four at one one stage either new or used or 10yrs old to blat roun on back in the day.The 350 four are worth heaps now due to only being made for a couple of years.A lot of old Cb 750 been turned into Cafe racer's & are harder to come by so 550 are being used for Cafe racer's.A unmolested mint model are hard to come by & they're ultra reliable as well.
