Hi, yes, the start clutch connects the transmission driven pulley to the final drive when the vehicle needs to move. It is a computer controlled wet clutch, so it can last a very long time including allowing a small amount of grab at stop lights.

My wife has a 2013 Accord with the CVT. No issues so far and it eliminates that high rpm acceleration that 4 cylinders are famous for! It accelerates with constant power, I love that. I've always hated accelerating and the engine jumps up to 2500 rpm to get some power. Now it's about 1500 rpm because the CVT is adjusting the gear ratio as you drive. We get a little rubber banding when slowing down but not a big deal.

Hi, No, the flywheel is external to the transmission case and is always rotating the input shaft. No power is transferred to the wheels until the start clutch is engaged. The start clutch connects the transmission output shaft to the final drive unit.

Some people that have turned up the boost too high have scored their CVT belts and ruined it. It can safely handle a bit more power than stock but doesn't handle much. Low end torque is the main problem, and the factory tune has a lot of low end power, so now they've figured out you can tune it to smooth out the power curve at the low end and shift the torque to higher RPM's, and get away with a little more power than they normally would be able to without scoring the belt. Still, the manual transmission allows much higher power. People are getting crazy power out of the little 1.5T with a manual (especially with a high blend of Ethanol).

If it was the start clutch, your engine would surge to high RPM immediately when flooring the accelerator (just like what happens if you put the car in Neutral and floor the accelerator). It sounds more like an IMA problem to me, as the IMA is what provides the instant torque at start out. I know that when the IMA is switched off (via the switch in the back) that the car has very low power and slow CVT response. I haven't investigated yet to see whether this is due to a lack of IMA power or due to the PCM entering a limp-home mode. When there's a CVT error code, the PCM can limit the engine power and max RPM. But the Drive indicator should be flashing if that is the case.

WeberAuto, I'm a versed mechanical and electronics engineer. Would there be a specific model transmission which would be best to start with?
@WeberAuto9 жыл бұрын
+ThantiK It depends upon what your objective is. I would pick one from a vehicle that most closely resembles what you are trying to accomplish. Remember, most CVTs are mated to small engines with relatively low power. The CVT allows the illusion of having more power by keeping the engine RPM in the narrow band where the small engine has the most power anyway. The JATCO CVT seems to be holding up the best. It is used in Nissan and Chrysler products. Best wishes!
@Osillius8 жыл бұрын
+ThantiK I recall watching a video about a CVT in which the pulley sizes were controlled by centrifugal force acting on a spring loaded mechanism. It seems like that could be applied to any vehicle that could physically mate to the transaxle provided you tuned the weights to the desired power band of the drive motor.
@techie00754 жыл бұрын
@@ThantiK Except for the mode handle that controls the forward clutch and reverse clutch, this CVT is electronically controllable. It's actually very simple to control: Literally three 12v solenoids control everything. Drive pulley, driven pulley and start clutch. The PCM controls them with a 195 Hz PWM signal that never goes above 50% duty cycle. For feedback, you have three 5v speed sensors that read the same (drive/engine, driven/clutch, clutch/axle). They are relatively fast, but whatever idiot that designed the speed sensors set the ratio between the latter two at 1.433 instad of 1/1 for some reason (500 Hz = 1000 RPM, 10 MPH, 7 MPH). The hard part is determining what tension the belt needs as there is no feedback to determine belt position and thus slippage. It also appears that the two pulley solenoids are backwards, where less power equals larger pulley. I am wondering if the pulleys are spring loaded, with the hydraulics relaxing belt tension instead of applying it.

On a Honda hybrid like this (I own a 2011 Insight), I'm curious if the starter that cranks the engine after it's been on auto-stop (at a stoplight) is the same as the one when you turn the key... or if the electric IMA motor somehow plays a role
@WeberAuto7 жыл бұрын
The IMA motor starts the engine after an auto stop. It is much faster and makes no sound
@techie00754 жыл бұрын
The IMA motor always starts the engine, whether by key or resuming from auto-stop, unless the hybrid battery is empty. In which case it falls back and uses the conventional starter to start the engine. You can tell the difference by how the engine starts...when the IMA motor starts it, the engine just purrs to life instantly. When the starter motor starts the engine, there's a one second delay followed by the traditional gear starter sound.
@5ervicemonkey4 жыл бұрын

Hello Sir, I like to ask you a question regarding my 2002 Honda Insight CVT with 109,000 miles, I have this issue of the Transmission going in and out of overdrive at say a steady speed of 60 MPH on a flat road with my RPMs at around 2200 RPMs in OD, then switch to 3000 RPMs for no apparent reason, then back in OD again.... I've changed the 2 filters in the transmission along with 4.5 quarts of Honda Specific CVT fluid. NOTE the filters were pretty black and the magnets had this pasty "black Soot" on them. I cleaned out all Magnets, replaced the 2 Filters and seals. I drove the car and the first thing I noticed was a smoother operation and OD would work for longer periods of time now. BUT on the same road today the issues were back, as it seems to slip In & out of OD and drop down to the next lower speed/gear in which the RPMs would shoot up to like 3000 plus RPMS.... What can be the problem? When it all works the MPG is GREAT like 65 MPG, but when it slips out of OD it goes way down to 47 MPG! I mean I can actually see the "Instant MPG gauge go from great MPG to Poor MPG right before my eyes....frustrating to say the least.... Any Ideas? Thank you In Advance =)

There is a part called the start clutch which is responsible for transferring the engine torque to the CVT drive pulley. It could be slipping
@Perry_Fan5 жыл бұрын
@@WeberAuto it starts off perfectly fine, from what I've read the Start clutch just allows a smooth transition from a total stop to motion at low speed. I think I figured it out anyway, I was running off the engine alone without the IMA hooked up because it was in a poor state. Once I reconnected the IMA it shifts just fine and now doesn't swing high and low as it was before.

James Harris it is difficult to replace. It requires a special puller and installer for the start clutch. The start clutch replaces a torque converter in a regular transmission. It jerks because is cannot smoothly connect the engine's power to the transmission output shaft.

There are people complaining of failures (and worse, Mini won't replace CVTs after guarantee!) but mine is still doing good at 130K km. I keep my fingers crossed. The CVT Mini gives no "driving pleasure" as enthusiasts put it, but it's nice to drive around, very zippy, well, except if you want to briskly overtake, it'll take a while to accelerate. For some reason (reliability and costs I believe) BMW stopped putting CVTs in Minis, and I believe, in any other car. It's a shame, I'm sure at some point, CVTs will make plenty of sense when reliability+slippage+torque issues are solved.

Rene Aguilera Yes, a bad flywheel will prevent the vehicle from moving forward or backwards. It is easy to tell of the flywheel is bad once the transmission is removed, all the spline teeth will be stripped off. A new Flywheel is a lot less expensive than a new transmission. If the flywheel is good, then something inside the transmission is bad. There are other bulletins for a CVT belt or the start clutch going bad internally. Might still be covered under warranty unless your odometer miles are too high. Check with the Honda dealership.

I have a question you may be able to answer... So I've hacked my 2006 Civic Hybrid because the PCM makes erratic and crazy pulley ratio decisions and I know I can do a lot better with a little micocontroller (if the PCM will tolerate it, which I have yet to see) and improve the mileage (and maybe even the CVT life, if I know what I'm doing). Currently, I'm just monitoring how the PCM controls it and mirroring those signals to the CVT because I'm afraid of setting the tension wrong and snapping the belt with the hydraulics. However, it appears that the hydraulic pulley control solenoids DECREASE the pulley size/tension, rather than increase it. So my question is, are the pulleys spring loaded to tension the belt, with the hydraulic solenoids providing relief of the tension so the belt will move the other way while the other spring takes up the slack? Currently I can see that the PCM's algorithm is A + B = tension release, and B - A = pulley ratio.

+saif almosuli Hi, it is a push belt; the drive pulley pushes the driven pulley through the belt so the belt does not stretch. It spins the same direction as the engine driving it.

I was also wondering what fluid to use. I've noticed that some aftermarket CVT fluids specifically say they're not suitable for Honda CVTs with start clutches. It seems the fluid can degrade faster than expected, and shorter service intervals are probably a good idea.

Hi all, looking for some opinions on CVT noise - high pitched, whining noise after 30min driving or so. The car was inveloved in rear end accident - quite strong one. I have stopped on the lights and then car hit me from the back at around 40km/h... also i was on the full break as I just stopped - the car was pushed about 1 meter in front. since then the high pitched, whining noise started. Now the insurance company questions this and suggesting wear and tear... is there any thing connecting and disconnecting when the car is stopped and can this mechanism be damaged by heavy impact (rattle like) in the accident? thanks m
@WeberAuto8 жыл бұрын
Yes, the shock of a collision can cause bearing Brinnelling (small indentations in the bearing rollers and bearing cups which can lead to a whining noise. Best wishes.

@WeberAuto6 жыл бұрын
A common problem. Probably stripped torque damper splines where it connects to the transaxle input shaft. You can verify by watching transmission input speed sensor with the engine running in drive. It should match engine RPM, if close to zero. you will need a new torque damper ($600 part).

My Honda Civic CVT gearbox needs to warm up 20mins to 35mins to engage the start up clutch. I can force it to 15mins by push more throttle, but the engage gear is a big bang reverse and forward, the bad things also when release throttle then push again creates big bang engage. What are the causing it?
@techie00754 жыл бұрын
Yeah you don't want to do that. Sounds like your start clutch is sticking. At best you'll burn out the clutch. At worst, you could snap an axle, snap the CVT belt, or strip out the splines on either the engine/CVT joint or CVT/axle joints.

Only 35K miles, and I've already had the fluid flushed to no avail. Sounds like the start clutch issue described here, but it should be a torque converter driven CVT in 2018

Thanks for the effort you've put into your many instructional videos. My understanding is that the metal 'push' belts are more efficient than the rubber 'pull' belts that are still used in snowmobiles and ATVs. It has also been suggested that the push belts may allow a greater range between the highest and lowest input/output ratios. Do you know if both of these assertions are true? Also, on snowmobiles and ATVs, control of the input/output ratio is pre-set by selection of springs, weights and helix shapes. But the automotive CVTs have programmable, electronic control. Do you have a video or a reference to material describing how an electronic system controls the separation of the sheaves?
@WeberAuto8 жыл бұрын
+Gregory Parrott Hi, yes, you are correct. I do not have a video on the CVT controls yet. I hope to this summer. Thanks for watching!
@gregparrott8 жыл бұрын
+WeberAuto Thanks! The part which most intrigues me is whatever mechanical means/mechanism they use that interfaces between the non rotating transmission body and the sliding spider assembly located on the outer drive sheave. If the inner sheave slid instead, it would be easier to apply an external control. But for some reason, the drive pulley always seems to have its sliding sheave mounted to the outside and it seems the drive ratio is primarily set on the drive pulley, not the driven pulley.

Seems that cvt drive belts are not durable enough and may be the weakest link in the chain. If a drive belt can fail in a civic, we can imagine that it won't hold strong enough for heavier cars.
@Carlitosway2118 жыл бұрын
Exactly! These transmissions work great in four wheels, scooters, and side by sides, but they need to stay there. CVTs have no business on the street. Too expensive and too many failures due to not handling the load.
