Hi, there is a DC-to-DC converter behind the back seat that does the job of a traditional alternator. If it overheats, it can fail. Check to make sure the intake vent is not blocked on the rear speaker shelf and also check to see if there is air flowing into the vent. This cools the high-voltage electronics including the dc-to-dc converter. You need special high voltage safety training to diagnose and replace that part. Best wishes.

Could you please advise common reason of that malfunction. 12v battery unable to charge from IMA. I have two codes: p1600 and p1570. During idle rpm voltage of small batterry is 11V, at time of acceleration growi ng up to 13,0 V.

There are 12 rotor magnets that will pass by each of the 18 field coils of the stator. There are three phases in the stator, so six field coils per phase will each be excited by the 12 permanent magnets per revolution of the crankshaft. 18 x 12 / 3 = 72 cycles per revolution. At 7000 RPM the frequency on one phase of the stator would read 504kHz

Prof. There are 12 magnets=6 alternating poles, so during 1 revolution there will be 6 full AC cycles, if we go at 7000RPM which equals to ~117 Rev per second, when we multiply that by 6 cycles per revolution we get frequency of 700Hz. Even going above 30 kHz would require accounting for skin effect in power wires and loses rectifying to dc, and going that high with frequency overall is not beneficial (talking about ac generators) I know it's a bit late (9 years 😅) but it so happens that just today watched this vid, other than that superb work proffesor!👍 Thank you for your work! I bought a used 2005 hybrid honda civic. Of course the HV battery died. I was told a marine battery would work as a replacement. Once I removed seats and put breaker switch in off position, I would be able to drive without spending thousands of dollars. Please advice.

hi, it will run as long as your 12V battery has power. With your IMA battery dead (bad or not recharging) the 12V system will not charge either.

I have a 2010 Honda Civic Hybrid that Honda diagnosed with a failed IMA Control Unit ($1600). I've found the control unit is MUCH cheaper used ($100-$200) and doesn't seem to be a particularly common failure. Is it a relatively simple replacement, as the dealership certainly won't agree to putting in a used part?

Hi, that is a great question. I don't have those specifications, but I suspect there is not much headroom since the system was designed for efficiency in keeping the system operating as designed.

I just purchased a 2003 civic hybrid i have the issue everybody have with the ima batt. But i notice when the batt. Light is on if i just turn on and of real quick the switch the system start charging again. Coul it be a bad dc to dc charging issue? Or the batt.

You should have someone check for trouble codes and see what they tell you. Unfortunately, you will probably need an new IMA battery.

Is it possible to upgrade from the existing 2nd generation Nickel Hydride Battery pack to the 3rd generation Lithium Battery pack? Would the existing inverter and charge controller also require to be replaced for the new Lithium Battery pack? Would the charge controller require any software update for the new Lithium Battery pack. I really hope that Honda implements this type of battery upgrade for existing (older) hybrids.

Thanks for video, I have a small question regarding my Honda Civic second generation Hybrid 2008 - after a lot of IMA errors I've opened the IMA battery and some of the sticks after a day or two from a discharge / charge cycle have almost 0 capacity. The rest of sticks have 3.000 mAh to 4.000 mAh. My question is where can I find the second generation sticks - they are welded in pairs so I need a double stick welded. Best regards, Tudoran Radu

at 17:46 you aren't completely right. If you disconnect 12V battery, while ignition is on, hv sustem wouldn'd turn off, beacose 12V battery charger will still provide power. To turn it off first turn ignition off by keys, and then disconnect 12V battery

+Volodumur Kalunyak Thanks for your input. If both 12V cables are disconnected on this model, it does shut off. Others may be different, but it would defeat the purpose of an emergency disconnect if the car were to be in an accident. Thank you for watching

Bad news. You have the typical bad Honda high voltage battery. Id that battery goes bad, the 12V system will not charge either (unless you keep the engine RPM high (1500 RPM). It is not safe to drive because the car could die at any moment while driving. Battery time.

I'm having a Honda civic 2006 model .. and the car is just discharging the 12 volt battery,and IMA and the Engine lights when on.. it starts but after a few minutes it just goes dead... the excalerator doesn't work anymore...so car stop moving and it's only idling but its not reving the IMA battery bars disappeared and it's not charging anymore. ..

Chances are good that your IMA battery is bad. Have someone check the IMA system for codes. Some people have suggested turning off the IMA battery switch behind the back seat as a work around. Best wishes!

I just bought an 07 model and took it to the dealership for inspection. They said there were a couple recall services they would do for free. I believe changing out the DC/DC converter was one. Randy, call your local Honda dealer and see if there is a recall service for your vehicle.

Awesome video! I have a 2006 Honda Hybrid Civic that runs great but I have two issues. 1) The engine battery drains overnight. The parasitic draw is coming from the the Back-up fuse which also is associated with all the communication's of the IMA. 2) The engine, while running in stop and go traffic, will throw three codes starting with an engine warning light and then the IMA warning light. The codes are P16D5 F-CAN Malfunction, P16D6 IMA CAN Malfunction and P060A PCM (A/T system) Internal Control Module Malfunction. These codes, when thrown, cause the car to lose transmission function, lose the ability to idle, cause the vehicle to die (while driving) and will cause the vehicle to be locked into Park if you put in park to try and start it. The car will start but wants to die when started and will not come out of Park without actuating the locking mechanism. These problems seem to only exist when weather is above 80 degrees (vehicle runs great in winter). I have had this problem for 3 years and I have replaced the battery pack in 2016 thinking that was the issue. It was not! The codes only become active when the weather is hot. If I disconnect the car battery the IMA is reset and the vehicle runs fine until the codes are thrown again. Always the same three codes and it only happens when the weather is hotter. Any advice on what I can do to fix this thing.

I think the battery going dead and the DTC's are related. Whatever module is drawing too much current will be warm to the touch. Low battery voltages can cause CAN communication errors. CAN errors can cause the transmission issue you have. Fix the parasitic drain issue and see what happens. Best wishes!

Put an ammeter in series with the 12V battery negative cable with the key off. Watch the current. pull one fuse at a time and see when the current drops to less than 20mA. It sounds like you have already narrowed it down to the backup fuse. Start with any module powered by the Backup fuse. Then move on to the three modules the codes set in (IMA, CVT, PCM). If you don't know what I am talking about, then you need to get someone who does to help you. Best wishes.

Hey I recently took a mesearement of the High Voltage cables. I was getting way more than 144. I got almost 170 V with the key in the on position (not crank). IMA light ( 1600 and 1449) Would you say I have a bad cell ? What would you do to repair this battery if you had a car with this problem?

2003 Honda Civic Hybrid After I read all 20 sticks.. most of them are above 7 -+ 0.30 for some. under load there is one battery that dropped at 6.8 V. I think I need to charge that stick. (D/C) and load test again. What do you think ?

each stick has 6 1.2 Volt cells, so normal voltage is 7.2 volts. when the system is charging, the voltage can approach 8 volts. If those are the original battery cells, they are most likely going bad.

You might be right. Charging the pack again can add more juice to the battery. I tested each stick and they quicly dropped voltage. I will charge and see if it does the same thing

I have a problem with the Transmission in my Honda Hybrid 2008, Because When the IMA Battery is not charged, the Engine, lost so much force, And in ascents the car does not advance, only the engine revolution is heard and as maximum raises to 2500-3000 RPM but the car does not advance in ascent. Hello Everyone. This may a wee bit off topic, but I saw a few questions below regarding the 12 volt battery and charging system of the civic hybrid. The 12 volt battery is used to power the accessories, but not to start the engine. Yet the engine will not start when this battery is dead, probably because the controllers all run off the 12 volt bus. It is a small battery, but is very expensive to replace, for who knows what reason. I recently paid 150 US dollars for one. There is a MUCH cheaper alternative to this battery, and you can buy it online. I'm not going to provide links because I am not in the business of selling things on the internet, but you can google "12 volt car battery supercapacitor" and you will see how to do it yourself and probably get a bunch of links to people selling completed systems. I think I recall seeing one for sale at 25 dollars! As an electrical engineer, I believe these things will last the lifetime of your vehicle and work just fine. Check it out. I find it insanely annoying that there is even a 12 volt battery in any of these hybrid vehicles, it's such a kluge! And for them to be so expensive is even more maddening! It would be so easy to power the 12 volt system from the 144 volt system when the key is turned on, and put a small 12 volt to 144 volt DC step up controller to allow an external car battery charger to charge the 144 volt battery in case it ever happens to go dead.

This is a 2005 Civic it is the same model I bought new in Sept 2004 the first available. Honda Started talking about Hybrid in 2003. Mine is the same color and the tail lights did not have this body shape until 2004.

This is really a fantastic overview of the entire system. It made me comfortable diving in and checking things out. I have a P1600 and P1593 trouble codes. I know that P1600 is generic and P1593 refers to the motor current V phase sensor high output -- but I don't know how to troubleshoot it. Any advice for a beginner who's in a bind? Thanks!

Thank you! Output high usually indicates an open circuit. There have been broken sensors reported from recent transmission work or engine work. The reluctor wheel hits the sensor and damages it. Best wishes.

Hi, I have a 2006 ima honda and the battery light stays on and by looking at your video I took everything apart just like you did and I made measurements and my diagnostic is that the ac inverted is bad...since I understand that inside de ac inverted works just like and alternator and it has a rectifier which i couldnt measure i took a chance on guessing that the ac converted is my problem. How close i am of solving this problem or if there is another way to make sure that ac is bad. Thank you! The most common problem on Honda IMA systems is the High Voltage battery. It is unlikely the inverter is bad. I recommend checking trouble codes first, then see what they tell you to do. Best wishes!

The DC-to-DC converter charges the 12V battery. It is behind the back seat. Check battery voltage with key on engine off. If it is less than 13.5V, it is not working correctly. Best wishes.

I have a 2005 model and the other night after being parked for a couple of hours I heard a thud from the car and a seriously horrible smell coming from the car. Upon further inspection in the morning there is a blackish stain on the back window above the vent just behind the back seat. I'm afraid the battery has exploded, it still has an awful smell in the car. You can't get within 5 feet of the car before you start to choke on it. Have you ever heard of this happening? Should I try to take it into Honda? I purchased the car used so I'm not the original owner. Wow! That is terrible. It could be the battery, but it could also be the inverter/converter. I would not recommend driving it. Have it towed to the dealership. Be prepared for the repair cost to exceed the value of the car. Best wishes!

I have an 06, civic Hybrid. the batt, ima, and mil are on, and the D is flashing. At about 2000rpm it charges 14 at the 12v battery and 176 to the orange cables at the DC/DC converter. I have codes u0110 and u1205. Reading this I checked fuse 61, it was intact. I'm not getting any charge or assist on the dash. I had hybrid battery apart and all cell packs are 15vdc+- Any tips?

Amazing Video, thank you! Have you ever heard of the hybrid system constantly killing the IMA battery? Reminds me of 12V battery and bad Alternator. The battery dying twice in a short amount of time points to possible alternator issue. I'm wondering since I've replaced the IMA battery now three times, what could be malfunctioning. Changing the IMA battery always gets rid of all Codes for about 2 months and then PP1600 and P1433. As of this morning, the IMA Battery is completely dead and won't even try to charge. No idea what is going on here.

Thank you, your car has a common problem. Replacing the battery will not fix it alone. There are some control modules that must be reprogrammed as well. Honda has a service bulletin about this very topic. Best wishes.

If the ima is completely discharged and won’t charge but car will start and drive find a straight away that you can safely get the car up to 60 then take your foot off the gas & immediately shut the car off & right back on within seconds those blue bars come back on you may have to try this a few times . Then take your car out for a long drive at least an hour with all other electric ie….radio heat or air conditioning off after you get at least 7 or 8 blue bars you can turn on Econ mode . Depending on how low assist battery is you may have to drive it longer to get full charge . Also before this double check the nuts on your 12 volt under the hood make sure connections are tight . Good luck this did work for me . Also prior to this i scanned and erased codes then reset maintenance lite . I have had no lights come on no problems & getting better fuel mileage no hesitation no stalls it’s been two weeks now .

For the Honda Civic Hybrid gen2, the brake master cylinder has an abs pump connected to it. Is this abs pump dependent on the IMA batteries too?

Many of those conversions use DC motors (a simpler system) rather than AC motors (more efficient).

Clear the codes then drive it get up to 60 take foot off the gas & immediately shut it off & turn it back on with in minutes it starts to charge keep driving it to charge it fully I drove for about hour and a half

Honda assumed the driver turned on air conditioning on a hot day. I used to have one of these, bought new in early 2003. Running the air conditioning imposed a large performance burden, so I never ran the air conditioning unless I had passengers (sometimes no AC with passengers) this was in Dallas by the way. I probably cooked the battery and inverter electronics.

Hi, I want to disable the hybrid battery in my Honda HAH 2005 by turning off the switch behind the cover shown @ 6:13. If I do so, would it make my hybrid car into a regular gasoline Car and can I still drive it? I suppose that would tune on the IMA and check engine lights. My hybrid battery is pretty much degraded (I have 200xxx miles). It discharges completely within 10-15 seconds of IMA running and then takes a lot time to charge back. I assume charger trying to charge a degraded battery and then not getting much in return, is not very energy efficient. I barely get 25 MPG in city and 31 on highway. Please advice. Thanks

I removed the lower portion of the back seat and then unbolted three bolts (plus 1 unbolted during the removal of lower portion) for the upper portion. But I couldn't remove it completely. I did not apply too much force, didn't wanted to break anything. Are there any more bolts possibly in the trunk? I think there are some clips in the upper section but couldn't find a way to access them. This is HAH 2005 V6. Thanks

I hope you can answer this question on my 2008 honda civic hybrid. I keep a running voltage reading by hooking up a meter to the battery pack. The voltage stays at 182 because the pack does not assist and pull on the voltage. It use to go up and down when working fairly good.It will calibrate from 178 to 182 after sitting a few hours . I have no assist as stated period , no engine cut off when stopping , and a snail could beat my car off the line . I am also wondering why the engine can kick in but the car just sits there or hardly moves at all if trying to climb a hill. Very dangerous! btw i have discharged and recharged my ima battery and it takes a long time to pull it down . But this does not help at all. Any suggestions? Tx

Do you have any warning lights on, Check engine, IMA, etc.? If it were my car I would check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) first. It sounds like your battery is good, but nothing is working. There are fuses in the battery end cover. There is another part called the Intelligent Power Unit (IPU), which is Honda's name for the Inverter/Converter. The IPU's job is to use battery Dc power to drive the AC IMA motor and assist you in accelerating. It also inverts the IMA AC power upon deceleration into DC to recharge the DC battery. Of course, there is the CVT transaxle. If the CVT is not functioning properly, the vehicle will not accelerate properly either. Check for DTCs and follow what they tell you. Best wishes!

Tx for the reply. I have a code of p1570. it is not reconixing the ima battery or so it seems? I took out the battery and charged all the sticks.There was one set that was acting weird so i replaced it with a weak one from a spare i bought . the weak one holds up to within a half volt of the rest of the pack under a 100 amp load so i figured it is ok. but when put back in the car the voltage does not vary one little bit. But drags down the car battery. the only thing i haven't tried is putting the old stick back in and see if that effects the voltage . At least before i took it out it would cycle now that i replaced the one twin stick it shows no bars at all.......

sir.... please reply for my question i am in difficulty.. mine is Honda civic hybrid 1.3 IMA 2008 (2nd gen) problem is 1.engine warning light came on rocker arm pressure switch (all is working fine like autostop,engine cruising at 40 speed but mileage"Mpg" was down side & after i take car 3000 rpm its limits and get jerking not going after 3000 rpm) i took my car in honda for engine light.they told me your engine harness was bad..in two to three places cuts found..it need to change whole engine harness.(it is too much expensive in india because only 300 units sold in india discontinued) but i dont understand why?? because honda mechanic showed me there are some problem in solenoid 4 switches.not too much wiring cuts only switches wires are cuts some i take it in my home and i try at home 1st i disconnected 12v accessory battery then IMA switch also.after an hour with safety tool i removed engine plastic cover and i change all four the switches wirings so............... 1st problem was cleared and engine light is gon.after this problem solved my IMA battery get more backup and also glass power windows are fastly close and headlights are more brighten and 3000 rpm also solved and mileage is too much better..but when my engine light gon two more lights are on 1.is ABS yellow light also red & 2.transmission d also blinking currently this is the problem autostop is not working mpg is good enough ABS RED AND YELLOW LIGHT & TRANSMISSION D LIGHT BLINKING i was checked all things i scanned a car code was U0129 (Lost Communication with Brake System Control Module) i try to delete codes but its not deleted please help me please answar me........8vhl

I just changed the box that changes the DC 144V to 12V. My battery light was staying on a lot and battery would go dead. After I changed the box I now have absolutely no power battery is up but everything is dead. There is fire on the two screw terminals on the under the hood fuse box. Is there a reset button or relay or maybe a fuse that blew. the only wire that would have had fire on it would have been the hot wire going to the 12v system and I think i had it coverd good and kept it away from any metal. But I guess it could have touched and blew a fuse if so which one. I have 3 of these little 2003 Hybrids thank you for your help. Ron

Hi, on a Honda IMA hybrid, the transmission will operate normally if the hybrid system shuts down. The IMA system only helps the engine crankshaft to rotate.

no, cvt will still be cvt. if that happens, 12V battery will NOT be charged. As soon as 12V will run out of energy, engine, lights (even hazards lights) and cvt cotroll will no longer function (car will die, even if moving).

this is just like working on a frequency drive on a chiller. except we rectify the ac into DC and power a dc buss over 700 volts. interesting thing i see on drives is that it will correct phasing no matter what incoming is. but if output is not right motor will go backwards. the life expectancy on igbt's are 10 years. ive had good luck with danfoss products abb will blow up if motor bad but danfoss will trip and alarm

I am wanting to add a small mono amplifier to help fill in the stereo using a subwoofer. I know options like a class D amplifier and a low wattage/low resistance subwoofer and maybe even a capacitor will help reduce electrical demands from the system, but I don't know if the 12V system can handle the additional wattage without overcycling the IMA and causinig it to die prematurely. Can you tell us any more about the 12V portion of the system and how much headroom for additions there is? Thanks.

So obvisously so many things could cause my 04 hybrid civic to pop out of reverse as ima light is on as im currently attempting to recondition them but would you suspect the ima system is the culprit or look into the civic overall problem as ive already found others having same issue. Did you change the IMA battery? If so, there is some programming that needs to be done with a Honda scan tool. Of course, there could be other problems as well. Get someone to check for diagnostic trouble codes and see what they indicate. Best wishes.

We did change the battery, but do you think we would ever need to change the built in a/c converter or dc-dc converter from the other honda where we got the battery from? Didn't know if everything from that car needs to be transferred as well to make the battery work right.

I don't think so, unless the model years are different. The programming I mentioned before will let all the components involved know what parts re there. There is also a software update for the batter controller etc. Get the scan tool check done.

i got a p1440 code, its got a new ima battery, mcm with updates but the charge of the battery wont show, any time i hit the 3.5k mark to show the status bar of the ima battery it throws a 1440 code, if i dont rev it up to charge it, the 12v battery light comes on. any ideas whats preventing my ima to charge?

Hi there. I have HCH II. My car is not charging and dies while driving. on my opinion there a 3 possible reasons to this outcome. 1. Honda has an air cooled cooling system for the hybrid system. The fan is in the trunk. Chances are that the 144V battery is bad. That will cause the dc-to-dc converter to not function properly. This will then not charge the 12V battery and the engine will die while driving. Best wishes.

+WeberAuto while running I've disconnected the 12v battery and let it runs for a while. It was charging fine. Usually the car stops charging when i drive it all day in a hot water. So I'm sure is the cooling system. What is the name of the module that starts na cooling fan? Is it engine control module or something else?

That does not mean it is charging. The engine can run on 10-15 volts. Put a volt meter across the battery terminals with then engine running. It should be approximately 14V

Hello so I notice mine sometimes when I step on it the battery light tends to come on . I have the 2004 5 speed one. But mine also has 268xxx miles on it but other then that problem the car runs fantastic. Once the battery light stayed on and the when I was driving the car seemed to die out like everything turned off as in the dash the radio and I shifted to a lower gear to see if I could eat it going but it was slowing the car down more . So I had to pull over and the car eventually died . I left it sit for a couple seconds and nothing . But I tried it again right after and it turned on like nothing ever happened to it ? After that the battery light tends to turn on but it doesn't die out in me like it did that one time . Do you know why that could be ?

This is a typical problem on that vehicle. The High Voltage battery starts to go bad, the DC-to-DC converter cannot work properly unless the HV battery is good. The 12V battery on the car is supposed to be charged by the DC-to-DC converter, but it is not, so the vehicle runs off of the 12V battery until the voltage gets too low and the car dies. Have someone check for trouble codes in the battery. If there are none, the DC-to-DC converter may be bad. Best wishes.
