Good old CR-V. I saw a comment a while back saying that "reliability is underrated", and I couldn't agree more. Thanks for the What Car fact, that's super interesting, and well deserved!

Honda has been my go-to for both cars and motorcycles and neither has left me stranded. I purchased my 2012 gas CR-V, EX-L, AWD three years ago with 100k miles. I've since added another 45k miles essentially from USA coast-to-coast road trips with zero issues. With proper maintenance and proactively checking for error codes periodically, I've little doubt this will see 200k, I'll then make the decision to retain or sell.

It's nice to have a car that actually works, near all of the time, isn't it? While it provides a comfortable, somewhat engaging drive at the same time. It's also a rarity that the UK and US share such a popular car - so it's nice to have that in common. It's also very safe. I'm sure you'll see 200K. Thanks for sharing!

I had an 11 plate diesel EX auto. I sold it two years ago with 115.000 miles on it and it still drove like new. Just changed the oil once a year. The only problem it had was a leaking power steering pipe. Incredible engineering.

Nice one! Reliability is certainly Honda's biggest selling point. You're probably right; as the Mk3s in good condition, that haven't been burnt out pulling caravans, become rarer, they will certainly hold their value, if not increase as you say. Good time to get one for anyone considering a Mk3!

I'm looking to buy a 2011 CRV 2.4L AT. Interior is a bit dirty and has over 100K on the odo. 2008-2011 CRV's seem to have oil burning issues and AC compressor issues (90% chance) along with other minor issues. Both pretty costly repairs. Been thinking long and hard if I should get it or not...
@whataneddie
@whataneddie 10 ай бұрын
That's interesting, we don't have the 2.4 here, so maybe the oil issue is strictly this engine; where are you based? Most people go for the diesel of that age in the UK. As for the AC issue, not crucial here being cold most of the time! Is there a particular reason you need one, or is it just preference? Have you considered a FWD/AWD Mazda CX-5 (not diesel)?

If you think its smoking too much first thing I would do is clean your EGR valve, every DPF or non DPF diesel Ive owned smoked less once the EGR was cleaned out. Check for splits in intercooler hoses. A fuel system/injector cleaner additive in the petrol tank would also be advised. Then change the diesel fuel and air filter. After that if its till smokes excessively do an injector leak off test to test each injector flow. Always fancied that Generation CRV, nice motor pal
@whataneddie
@whataneddie 6 ай бұрын
Thank you very much for the advice, that's much appreciated. My suspicion is that the car was probably driven very tamely, for short trips and without too many revs with its last owner. After the first few months of ownership it hasn't smoked after some good runs and blasts. The fuel additive couldn't hurt, so a bottle of this should be a good prescription as you say. Thanks a lot, mate!

@@whataneddieMake sure you use good quality diesel also like Shell. I have a Mazda with the 2.2d engine and had some misfiring issues on occasion in the first year while using supermarket diesel. Have stuck to the std Shell (non super) diesel for the last 2 to 3 years and it hasn't misfired at all since. I do plenty of motorway miles on my commute also, which helps. Looking to buy a crv mk4 EX currently.

@@Merlex430 Thanks for the advice, supermarket fuel is convenient, but as you say, not the best. Well worth a few extra pence. Which Mazda do you have? Nice one, I was looking too as there's a big leap in interior finish and styling, but I got this low mileage 2007 for half the price!

I had a 6 with the 2.2 diesel engine and shifted it on after the dreaded timing chain issue had to be resolved...cost a pretty penny. Anyhow opted for an older honda with the 2.2cdti and can honestly say the Mazda and Honda engines are worlds apart...the Honda has so much more low down torque and is a far superior unit imo. We have an Frv Ex trim which we have now owned for 8 years and apart from normal maintenance the car has been faultless so much so that although we have discussed upgrading it on numerous occasions we have held on to it as its difficult to find a worthy replacement.

Had a 2013 version (4th gen) since new, treated myself when I retired and yes, I had a towbar fitted but only for my little trailer to take garbage to the tip. Splashed out on extras like side-steps and skid plates. Had a lot of travel plans that sadly never worked out with the result that now it just turned over 17K miles :-) Never skimped on servicing despite the low mileage. Service mechanic laughs at the mileage when I bring it in. Only issue has been the DPF getting blocked - understandable given the number of short trips, but I have that sorted now and even if it gets blocked again I can fix it myself. It's a great car to drive, comfortable with plenty of torque and amazingly quiet for a diesel. I won't be changing it any time soon unless it explodes or something.

@@whataneddie I need to correct its reliability history, I forgot that last year I had injector number 4 changed because it was shorted out. It was thought this was causing excess fuel to be injected and thus responsible for the DPF getting blocked up. Car seemed to still run OK and no engine light was lit so I was still running it like that. I had the DPF cleaned 3 times in a row over 6 months prior to that and at that point was thinking of moving it on (£250 each time to have the DPF cleaned out) but thankfully all issues seem to be resolved now. I bought a Topdon Artidiag 600S OBD2 scanner to keep an eye on any future issues. When I thought of changing the CRV I honestly could not think of any other car I'd rather own!

@whataneddie

That sounds like a wise move. 2007 was the first production year for this model of CR-V and they were reliable from the off. I would highly recommend the 2.2 diesel as they can go for 200,000+ miles with no DPF. I always like a manual too as there is less to go wrong. Most people seem to have a good experience regardless of engine and transmission, as seen in the comments, with only a few things to look out for with regards to maintenance and servicing. Happy hunting!
