I bought a used 2012 Honda CRV in 2023 with 112,000 km. The price was right. I was experiencing a horrible chatter in the rear end when making hard turns. When you you made a U-turn, the chatter from the rear could be felt right up the steering wheel. You just felt the whole rear end was coming apart. My mechanic told me the noise was a rear outboard CV joint. Thankfully, I saw this video before I actually ordered a CV joint. After changing the rear differential oil the noise and rear end chatter went away completely. The number of people who told me (including myself) that I was crazy thinking this would fix the issue are all hanging their heads now. Thank you very much for the video.

I have a 2016 CRV and I just started hearing this sound 2 days ago. Didn’t even realize that it was coming from the rear passenger side until I heard it early in the morning while going down a hill at 20 miles per hour. Your video was very helpful and I’ll be getting it checked out. Thanks.

Audio was okay, I just had to turn up the volume. Dave over at the big dog5001 channel did a good video on this oil. My Corvette does the same thing. If the oil gets old the rear end starts to chatter. Super easy fix! Thanks for showing us this process Tim.

Thanks! I recommend 30K interval of service on the trans fluid and rear diff on these and other Honda models.

I've heard Honda only wants Honda fluids in them. Hope you had a great Christmas.

Hondas are picky on parts and fluids.Have seen it with oil filters, cheap oil filters will cause vtec solenoid codes. It is use the Honda oil filter or a very high quality oil filter

Yes. I try to stick with OE on most repairs. Sadly we have issues with local stock so it’s sketchy sometimes getting parts you need to conduct repairs.

Is there a service bulletin on that issue ?

No, its regular maintenance, remember 2006 brand new crv, just barely 6 month old started grinding and thumping heavily, dealer just replaced the old fluid, we were told its supposed to be changed every 2 motor oil changes.

Only advice id give especially for those that are looking to do this themselves is break the fill loose first, have means to refill you can't just stick a funnel in these and fill, USE ONLY HONDA FLUID! and last make sure the vehicle is level jack up the front and back.

so why does it do it?and how to fix it?

Fluid gets full of friction material. Change fluid and cross fingers.

I brought my 2006 to the dealership and they wanted to charge me over $4,000 to replace the rear differential, I instead did some looking around at KZbin and saw someone having the same problem and all they did was just change the fluid. I went back to the dealership and bought the fluid at the parts department went to a local shop and had them drain it and pump the new fluid in and no more noise. However I noticed the fluid in mine was clear and not dark like in this video.

Maybe they used generic oil, Hondas are delicate with the original fluids, worked on an odyssey once, dealer told they needed a new transmision, I just replaced the oil for original, (did it twice ,to almost replace it all) And problem solved, no more over heating on highway, no more transmission stucked in 3rd gear.

@@Eli-kr5bm I bought my Honda brand new so that clear oil was the factory fluid.
