I've been riding a CRF250L since 2013. Upgraded to the slightly redesigned model in 2017. Just today, I traded in my trusty bike for the CRF300l. Really appreciate your review, makes me even happier with my decision. I had an '81 XR200 as a kid. Loved that bike. Primitive? Yes, dual shocks and springs on the back end, just before mono shock swingarms. Thin front forks. Blocky seat. Bouncy. But god I loved that bike. Ever since then I have been trying to find a bike that felt that good. Probably never will since it was my first, but it sounds like the 300L will come closer than any others have. Happy riding!

Your dialogues reflect an in depth knowledge that comes across so well, and you're no slug in the editing room. I've waited 6 months for my Rally to arrive and I'm told a shipment has arrived and I'm first cab off the rank. Meantime I have a much researched assortment of after market accessories ready and waiting that will make the bike my perfect unicorn. I have an Africa Twin that serves me well, however the 300 rally will be my extreme remote bike to do the braided rivers, mountain tops and single trails that NZ excels in. I look forward to following the evolution of your new Rally acquisition. I don't like to fill the above handle bar view with a phone mounted at the top of the visor because of my chin mounted gopro, its a view that is presented to my subscribers with a phone smack in the middle. So I will mount my gps low above the handle bars. I will mount my Scott steering damper below the handle bars and will consider weather to keep the lower half of the fairing on the bike or not. At the end of the day with air intake modifications exhaust systems and 550 ecu, plus gearing to suit I will have a very serious motorcycle fully customised and still be cheaper than an adapted enduro bike such as a Ktm or Husky. For sure the power is lacking compared to the for mentioned bikes but its a compromise I can live with. Thanks for your awesome videos.

Had my 300L for 10 months now, loving it! At 69 and losing some muscle, this fills the holes in places I hesitate to take the Africa Twin when riding alone. All I’ve done to it is hand guards and Protaper bars, AXP tail rack, D606/MT21, and a bit of luggage. Expecting a Seat concepts Comfort seat in the mail any day now. I would recommend you send them your seat pan, clean, and let them do the install for $25. Happy motoring!

G’day, I really enjoy watching your episodes, on the Honda CRF300L, I 100% agree with your comments, you have answered all of the same thoughts and Questions that I have, I’m an Aussie who will be moving to Thailand to live, hopefully if things go to plan sometime in 2024 I will be touring Thailand and Vietnam by bike, and yes I was originally was thinking to buy a bigger touring bike and then having second thoughts after a shoulder injury from a fall, I had to focus my thoughts on a smaller lighter bike to fit my needs, a friend I know who now lives in Thailand had bought a second hand CRF300L at a motorcycle auction, I had the opportunity to have a ride on it and fell in love with it, I think it’s the best small, light touring bike I’ve come across, I have already made inquires I will be buying the Honda CRF300L Rally version, I will be doing some upgrades to suspension, handlebars & risers, foot pegs, tires, rear rack, seat re-padding, even with all the upgrades it’s still works out to a reasonably priced touring package, great bike. I got mine in September. So I'm at 10 months or so. I've got almost 5,000 miles on it so far and it hasn't failed me yet. I did fine in the woods (which is only powerline trails for me) and did ok on the highway. Keep in mind you will only be going 70-75 on the highway. So if you're riding with people on street bikes you will be holding them back. That's not really my interest though so I can live with it. I only ride 25 minutes to work and take it no further than one or two towns away. I love this bike. Yes, I love the factory tires as I do more road riding than off road

Starting from the top- new handlebars with barkbusters front and rear suspension new leavers aluminum exhaust big foot pegs aluminum remove plastic radiator cover put an aluminum one because you will drop your bike frame guards guard on rear brake cylinder and rear brake disc new tires I'd recommend 606 Dunlop Pirelli front new chain sprocket go to a 45 tooth take off the ridiculously big license plate holder put on a very small neat and tidy one you can find many of them new blinkers ones that Bend if you crash skid plate you can either go with plastic or aluminum better filter in airbox new battery go with lithium and a better bulb for front headlight

ECU is my next thing I'm going to do and get rid of all the emission stuff on the bike.. not sure where you live but I live in Canada Ontario so bike is packed away we still have snow we're all still snowboarding.. but I'll search and some of my photos and see if I have some pictures of my bike with the mods..

You have some very good points! As an older rider, I'll add a few. I'm going to buy a Rally. I'll probably use it 80/20, on/off road. This is a good looking full size motorcycle, (I know you know that 8) that gets 80 mpg! It also has Honda quality, longevity and resale value. The motor being tuned at 75% potential is part of that, and the gas mileage. As you said, the aftermarket is huge for this bike! In addition to hp, you could add a bigger seat for road comfort. Change pegs. Change suspension parts for better on or off road. For the price it was, you can even change wheels for better brakes and tires! I'm thinking about the wheel option for better road tires already! Bars and grips also. There is reasonable protection behind the Rally fairing, I'll be able to do some sport touring around the state on secondary roads! I'm retired and in no hurry. LOL. Options are unlimited! I've been riding all my life and I'm done long distance touring. This Honda scratches the itch and is just fun!! JMHO Peace --gary

I was on the fence and gonna buy the KLX 300. After your comparison review I reconsidered. My 2023 Honda RF300L arrived two days ago. Soooo glad I went with the Honda. Also, I was on a FB group with new KLX300 owners. Lots of complaints regarding difficulties of getting those bikes into 2nd and 3rd gear ⚙️.

At 61 I’m not a spring chicken, but I just picked up a Rally. Why the Rally and not the L? I consider myself a LD rider, so the larger gas tank and wind protection was a plus. Besides, the Rally was the only one available at the time. All of the L were sold the day they hit the showroom floor. Keep up the videos, looking forward to see what you do to your Rally.

I don’t know about inexpensive. In my country the 300l cost 9200 $ and the Rally costs 10700$ at that price I expect great things and not a subpar suspension. Remember not all can get as cheap as you can in the US

You can respring the klx 300 suspension for under 300 dollars. Also I have found lots of after market support for the klx.the Honda will need about a thousand dollars invested into the suspension...fyi

I have really enjoyed your informative videos. I have a WR 450F, a KLX 300 R( 2006 significantly better and only 106 kg compared to recent KLX) , a Yamaha (2014) mt 03 660 and recently just purchased a CRF 300 Rally. I have to admit the Rally is a phenomenal bike for it's intended purpose. Amazing! It's not going to perform like the other bikes and I never expected it to. Obviously the WR is like a McLaren vs a Toyota corolla the Yamaha Mt 03 660 is an exceptional road bike and beautifully manufactured. The finishing outshines the more recent mt 07, 09 etc. But I can't emphasize enough how remarkable the CRF 300 Rally is for use on the highway and equally how easy it is off road. It's absurdly smooth for a small single, great fuel economy and the performance of the engine is perfectly adequate. I can see how these bikes are in hot demand.

My rally is a great bike . With a 13 tooth front. DNA , FILTER ,550 ECU. Its almost perfect. Comfortable long distance , some single track . High speed two track. Long range . Is awsome . 40 years riding and racing it does what I need now .

Great review! I totally disagree with your 'beginner' label for the bike, you will find lots of very experienced guys , like myself, getting rid of much higher spec bikes and getting the 300 because it's comfortable on the highway, can be powered up a little more and with a suspension upgrade is 98% as capable and 100% more reliable than almost anything out there for the average guy. I've got an Africa Twin and a WR450F, I'm selling the WR! I'm also waiting for the Rally, I have the standard for my son. :-)

I agree with you on everything you said, especially the weakness of the plastic around the rear turn signals. I had to replace the assembly (Part# 80150-K1T-305) for that. The part was cheap but I had to disassemble the rear to fix it. Overall it was a good learning experience, but I have to knock Honda for the design on this part.

Yeah most likely it was designed before the rear indicators were put into consideration. I bet they stick out that far to meet a specific standard.

Interested to see an in depth adv comparison of the 300 rally vs T7. I’ve had the 300L and T7 (sold both) but a 300 rally would be a good middle ground. Thought about it but a super clean used WR250 with larger tank and windscreen popped up in my area. So that’s the direction I went. Dual sport/light adv ftw.

I'm starting to feel like this bike is the Chevy LS equivalent of the dual sport world. Cheap, efficient, huge aftermarket, and extremely reliable. Love all the options available especially. For a bike that has only been out a few years the aftermarket is maturing very quickly. Looking forward to your Rally build. Got mine in late May and have a Thai ECU and Moto X exhaust on the way from Bikerzbits with a growing list of other parts for it. It puts a smile on my face every day.

@@TraveladvRajanSRai LMAO At least the 300L can run without an $800 ECU and has far less maintenance. Adding cams and intake mods to a 300L give you stock DRZ400 performance which isnt a slug compared to other bikes in the segment. Costs about $250 total

Andrew, I’m excited to hear about you picking up a rally version soon. I would love to hear what modification it might take to fit the rally’s larger fuel tank to the base L frame. As you probably know, IMS is going to produce a larger tank for the L, but it only will have 2.5 gal capacity, for nearly $400. I’ve been curious about the idea or ordering an oem rally tank to mod fit on my L base model! Keep up the great content!

Hi Andrew, I enjoy your videos (subscribed), and will add a little old guy experience. Hopefully well received. I bought two dual sports last year, one for me and one for my 16 year old beginner son. I am not new to bikes, but took a few decades off raising a family, working, blah, blah, blah. I bought the first available and age appropriate. Would have bought the CRF if available, but turns out I found a KLX300 for me and a KLX230 for my kid. I am no fanboy, too old to care, but I do like objective analysis. You have mentioned stroke in past videos, none of these bikes constitute long stroke, they are all over square bore vs stroke. The WR250R engine has by far the most potential due to the head design (by FAR). Lots of HP potential. Hopefully Yamaha upgrades it and returns it for the US. Fast is relative, the Honda will require much more significant upgrade in the suspension department (to go fast). I wish I could do a side by side to confirm, but it is plain soft and under damped for serious trail riding. I do turn my own wrenches, I am 54, 185, 5"11". I did a racetech gold valve and spring update front and rear, $800. Totally available. If the Kawi suspension is better out of the box, then this is not even comparable now. It is a fantastic upgrade. Super supple over the chop, rocks, roots, and square edge stuff, but firm for the G outs and moderate air under the wheels. The other thing Kawasaki did, probably to pass euro or EPA stuff, is add an electronic controlled secondary throttle. The secondary throttle is half closed to 7K rpm and the has a linear ramp to full open by 9K rpm. I removed, setup a data logger, and tuned a PCFC for the proper AFR. Adds back a shit ton of midrange, considering a 24-25HP bike. If the curve now looks like a 300R curve (which I bet it does), it gives the kawai the advantage in low to midrange tourque along with a higher peak. If your friend wants info on how to mod his KLX300 let me know. I would say do stock for stock comparisons, or do a mod for mod comparison, but the kawi is easy to mod for not too much money. The suspension figure you quoted in not realistic. The ultimate comparison in my mind would be the way I set my bike to a CRF300l with a slip on and tune and a full boogie YSS upgrade. I mean the full fork cartridge spring setup and the top of the line fully adjustable shock. As a side note, the KLX230 suspension options as my kid grew were limited. I ended up getting an Ohlins shock and doing racetech cartridge emulators with CRF230F eibach springs for the front, kids words for the difference - "friggen awesome". Keep up the good work. Get your buddy to do some simple upgrades and do another side by side, that would be fun.

Got a 2019 crf250l always wanted the rally version but anyhow got discouraged due to fuel range & I know a bigger tank is an easy mod, also the lack of luggage rack was a bummer, picked up a Himalayan also 2019 for a couple thousand & was amazing (dog shit slow) but did everything I was looking for in fuel range & haul gear, but parts & service is a joke in our area & nobody wants to work on it plus there's alot of (cheap) parts on this bike that get aggravating still extremely functional but it is ever present / was looking into trade crf250l for the new 300 but most dealership wanna only offer maybe a grand & resell it for 3-4 plus been looking at the 500 scrambler online haven't seen one in person or the KLR 650 got a lowered version out- too short for the original ones but lowering is an option aside from being terribly top heavy

There’s only 66 available on cycletrader as of today for the entire USA Maybe if Honda would get there shit together there would be more interest. Cost of ownership with a decent suspension is close to $8k including dealer fees. Not a cheap bike by any means.

Excellent review, as always. On one of your earlier videos I mentioned welding in the comments (don't remember why) you said you were a welder. Impressive resume. Totally agree with your comments on the frame. Had a 1000 Gold Wing pulled straight in UK on a Motoliner Gig. Ran straight as a die after. It really depends if you ride on road a lot. I think it is a good feature to have for a commute but it also turns off super easy as well.

If this bike wasn't so heavy it would be fantastic. 135kg (without fuel) on a low powered 300 is pretty bad when you can get similar priced and specced bikes under 110kg (I have the Fantic Casa 250 for example).

Or you can get Himalayan which has 24 hp and 200 kg and it's perfectly fine lol. Weight is not a problem on this Honda at all.

Great video but the DR650 is much better on the highway than the CRF 300 L just put a larger gas tank on and good for 400 Km + per tank of gas. The DR 650 is a true duel sport, the CRF great bike for off road but will not keep up with the DR650 on the highway. Me I have the DR650 and the KTM 390 Adventure in my stable and getting a CRF 300 L set up for mostly off road, Dunlop D606 rear and Pirelli M16 front, and 45 tooth sprocket rear and bash plate and hand guards and better handle bars. Also a rear rack to carry extra gas as the gas tank is way to small. My CRF 300 L is in the dealer ship just waiting for the up grades.

There is a lot of reasons I like the 300L/rally more fuel injections, dash cluster, inverted forks, liquid cooling, 6 speed trans, slipper clutch, ect.

@@MotorcyclesOffroad nice extras but not really needed. I do like the 300 L but for on the highway the DR is much better. But bough in the stable is the best pick. For all the fancy stuff plus more I have the KTM 390 Adventure. Do have to upgrade the bash plate, but then the Honda does not even come with one. Every bike has its good points and that is why I like three in the stable. The KTM for adventure on paved , gravel and dirt roads and light trail, theDR650 for the same but add in a lot more dirt and gravel roads, and trails, bough great for long all day or week end rides, and do love the torque of the DR and no wind protection. For the trails and dirt roads for shot ride the CRF 300 L but do need to up grade the tires, handle bars, up the rear sprocket to at least a 45 tooth and a rear rack to carry extra gas and the tank is very small. Not much worse than running out of gas in the middle of nowhere. Bough my KTM 390 and the DR650 with the 20 liter gas tank will get me over 400 Km per tank of gas. the CRF 300 L about half of that if you are lucky. For of road the CRF 300 L is a much lighter bike, so that is a big bonus if riding by your self, in the really gnarly stuff. All three are great bikes and all have good points, but do feel the 300 L is lacking for long highway rides, but it can be done. It shines off road.

@Motorcycles Offroad can you tell me where you got that image from that you posted on one of your videos of a 300 Rally that was converted from red to black? I want to do that so bad... I almost bought a 2018 250 Rally over my 300 because I wanted that black and gray bike so bad... If I’m not able to get new plastics for mine in black, I’ll probably just do a decal kit. I want to eliminate all of the blue on the bike first and foremost, and honestly, I would like to get rid of all of the red as well. But depending on which route I go, plastics or decals, will determine if I keep some red on it or not... I’m wondering if 250 plastics will fit on the 300... Any input, including the source of that image, would be greatly appreciated!

In my experience a true ECU tune works better. I've tuned 4 bikes so far with EJKs and used tuned ECUs. For the 300L I ordered a Thai ECU from Bikerz Bits for $110 shipped. If I need something different as far as tuning I'll be sending it to 550 Performance.

Usually, the more torque there is, the more engine breaking you will feel. It probably has a bigger flywheel than other bikes you've ridden.

Great MSRP bike with great service intervals, fuel injection, and 6 speed. Suspension is not expensive either, front sping and rear shock are 5-600 on eBay. And this is about bikes being sold today not something from 2 and a half decades ago.
