Honda Cruise Control Troubleshooting and Combination Switch Replacement Accord 2.4L 2004

In this video, I show you how I troubleshoot and repair a cruise control system on a Honda. In this case it was the cruise control combination switch that was bad. The exact vehicle in video is a 2004 Honda Accord EX 2.4L Sedan.

Bought a 2003 Honda Accord but the cruise is not working. The switch on the wheel is functioning but I just noticed the previous owner replaced the battery but put one that's weaker than what's supposed to be in the car, could that affect the cruise control?

This is 100% the best car tutorial I have EVER seen. The schematic of the "system" and the multimeter continuity tests were the icing on the cake. I have a 2005 Accord and now I know it is 100% the Cruise Control button. Exactly the problem you showed here. Gonna try the "wedge something in" trick before I spend any $$$. This is very clearly laid out. It makes it easy to understand how to deal with this kind of problem. I wish I had watched this in its entirety before ordering a used actuator motor and cable online. I have already repaired the multi switch on the steering wheel and the cruise control still wouldn't engage, so I decided to order the actuator motor and hope that was the problem instead of the "brain".

Sir, This is one of the best videos I have ever seen on youtube. I make and edit videos and there are a lot of evidences that show your knowledge of the video production skills. From the subject side your are well spoken without the "like" syndrome where someone has to say the word like before each statement. Your safety instructions were right on with only one exception and that would be to preclude your warning statement that you are making a entertainment video and if you are not a trained person with mechanical knowledge, you should not attempt to do this. Again, a great job. Lastly, I thought that you might be able to get another video to make using this video to teach others how you made this one. That would include the script, audio volume control, camera use, and explaining the use of providing visual electrical charts.

If you go through this procedure, you probably just need a $10 switch. But in the 06 that I have, you can't disconnect like older models. This is a great presentation that I wish I had followed. I had to buy a new assembly so I will have close to 100.00 in it.

You've got a good grasp on how the system works and you explained it well. That MS906 is used in a lot of shops and it gets good reviews. I'm hoping to get one someday. I'd like to see how to test the module you mentioned at :34 into the video. I guess being inside it's less prone to failure than the actuator under the hood but I'd like to have seen the location/ what it looks like. Today I replaced my cab;e reel and got radio controls back (yay) on my 03 Accord EX 4-dr manual with 327,000 miles on it. I followed your steps on the switch, all is good there. I'll get back on it later but I still need to test the brake switch and actuator before considering the module under the dash. Thanks for the great info, huge help!

Meant to follow up- for those with manual trans, there is a pedal switch pad on the clutch pedal just like the one on the brake pedal. Don't forget to check that as one of the first things. Mine was good, problem turned out to be the actuator under the hood. The FSM does have a test for the cruise module inputs on page 4-40 and the actuator on FSM page 4-43.

I had the switch light for cruise, but not the dash light. I glued a penny to the the brake switch and got the dash light. It still didn't work. I inspected the cable on the throttle body and found that the cable was disconnected. I removed the throttle body and found the plastic connector was broken. I ordered a new throttle body and hope that it will work when the cable is properly attached. Thanks.

2 different questions. 1)I have a 2000 Accord EX v6. It's been sitting up for a few years. When I parked the car everything was fine but now the on/off switch on the dashboard will not light up when I push it; so the cruise doesn't work. Any ideas right off the top of your head what could have happened? It's an odd situation seeing the car just stayed parked in my shop. Also, I've checked the fuse in the dashboard. 2) I'm replacing the steering column in the morning. Is there any programming involved when I have the other column installed (different column & key). I should just change the ECU too. The scanner has been telling me it's bad since I bought the car 10 years ago lol. They're just too expensive. I appreciate any help you or anyone else can provide. Mine problem was the clutch pedal sensor. I just glued a five cent piece over the hole. Easy fix.

I watched your video and it is very informational and nicely put together. However, I feel like I have a different problem and was hoping you might be able to figure it out. Ok, so I initially thought I needed a cruise control switch but the cruise control button works on my old one it’s just the accelerator that sets it button doesn’t seem to set and you lose mph when taking foot off the pedal. Replaced it with brand new one and it is still doing the same thing. So maybe a fuse? Or something else?

I had the same problem, the cable from the actuator to the throttle had come undone. Hooked it back up, works a treat!

How is it that every video I watch on cruise control module replacement, the person is able to simply unplug the connector from the module, meanwhile both my '05 and '06 Accords have the connector soldered to the board.

Very good video ! My Honda Pilot 2003 has Main cruise control light is on but when I hit cruise control switch is not working so I did change the switch like you did and still not working? and when I put air bag back the SRS light is stay on, it was not before any suggestion ? Thanks.

Unfortunately it needs proper troubleshooting done on it. Need code for the SRS also, it is probably related to the attempted repair (like it was unplugged while battery connected or it wasn't plugged back in correctly), but it could be a totally separate issue.

My Excelerator will not accelerate but I am trying to figure out if it is the throttle position sensor? Or is it the one on the actual cruise control actuator can you tell me how to determine which one it is? My cruise control light blinks on and off if I turn the steering wheel but my cruise control has never function at all since I’ve owned the 2003 ex v6. I just recently put a new alternator new battery and valve cover gasket and now this and it will not accelerate when I press the gas

I went to your link that showed the test kit you used. I see it is expensive. I wonder if someone can rent that kit somewhere. This repair I am sure is very expensive at the Honda or second source repair shop and makes the DYI part of the repair worth doing it. Buy having to buy expensive equipment cuts that margin a lot. One idea is to develop a parts list for the different connectors involved in these tests and then using a simple 15 dollar VOM to test the system. Just a thought. Would be that extra chocolate they put on your frapp. :>)

In my case the cruise control light does not turn on. Not even when at ignition position. Clock spring seems to be ok as horn and other buttons register good. Cluster light is good tested it using scanner

Check fuses 7 and 13 in under HOOD fuse box and fuses 18 and 21 in under DASH fuse box. If the clock spring (also called cable reel) is bad it can also cause the cruise control to not work, in addition to other things like bad switches and wiring. It will need some troubleshooting done most likely.

Mine is an 05' Accord 2.4L 4 door LX. The switches look the same but the connection is completely different. Mine looks like two white connectors sitting next to each other, one with 4 wires and the other 3 wires.

I have an 04 accord 2.4l 5 speed manual, my cruise control light come on when I press the button but when i try to set it, the cruise light just blinks. Any idea what that might be?

It will probably need troubleshooting done with a Honda capable scan tool. If I was checking vehicle I would start by scanning for codes and looking at data like I showed in this video. There are some things you can check first: Make sure brake lights are operating properly (aftermarket LED bulbs have been known to cause issues with the cruise control on certain Honda models). Check #13 fuse (20A) in the under HOOD fuse box. Check #18 fuse (15A) in the under DASH fuse box.

Sounds like it would probably need some troubleshooting, sometimes a clock spring issue will make things work intermittently, especially when turning the wheel.

That's my problem, there doesn't seem to be a reason. Accelerating faster, stopping completely, going up or down a gear, etc. It's just picks and chooses when to work

You Don't have to take the air bag out. Turn the wheel until the control is at the top and you can reach the 2 screws that hold it in.

You can reach the screws but the parts will be damaged trying to remove it that way. They are pinned in place.

coincidence. The oil drain plug, fill port and dipstick are no where near anything that has to do with the cruise control. ALso unless you cruise controlled it right into the parking lot and tried to cruise control it right out of the parking lot then maybe you would have something. It probably happened about at the same time. Very likely a coincidence. It was bound to happen at some point. Just trouble shoot and fix it and it will be fine. Don't wait or the problems will stack up and then it will be overwhelming.
