Honda CRV AWD real time 4wd system explained...

Honda's real time AWD system.
This works via two split pumps. Fluid is proportionally sent between the pumps but once front wheel slip is detected a valve will open sending more fluid to the rear pump this in turn forces/engages the clutch packs, inturn sending torque to the rear drive shafts. it's a seamless system and comes on/off automatically.

What is it? Honda's Dual Pump system is used in the Real Time 4WD/AWD system specific fluid is required to produce hydraulic pressure for transmitting force to the rear wheels when needed, via two corresponding pumps and valve's.

@@fishermen22 As long as you change the oil as recommended and use the correct Honda diff oil, there should be no issues. If the wrong oil was ever used or the system was abused during its life, as expected there may be issues. It's generally a good solid system. I have since sold the vehicle. Cheers

If you take off the rear shaft from the differential can you still drive the car in only front wheel drive without damaging anything?

Generally yes, if you remove the rear drive shaft the vehicle can still be driven via the front wheels. But this can only be done if the rear differential can freely spin, IE.. no damage to rear differential/ rear bearings etc...but doing this is not recommended.

Hi, I'm going to change the diff oil so thanks for that. My 4 wheel is not engaging on tough terrain, will the oil help? if not, what could be the problem? cheers

Very important to change out the old oil in the diff.. replenish with the correct dual pump oil from Honda. Hopefully this should work.

If it makes a howling sounds it’s probably your clutch disc inside the differential. It could also just be the old fluid but might want to change the disc inside the differential.

i have a 2007 crv 4x4 but has some abs problems, so, my 4x4 system won't work?? when i lift the car up, and put D, the 4 whhels spin normaly

If there is no resistance on the front wheels the rear differential and dual pumps generally won't work/engage. The vehicle needs to be on the ground. Go find a small patch of grass or loose surface and have a helper to see if the rear engages once the front wheels loose traction/spin.

The AWD system is very good in the 06 Gen 2 CRV AWD... I have heard after the 3 Gen things were not as good. I have since sold the vehicle.

My 2005 CR-V has a switch on the dashboard that can turn off the VSA. What exactly does that switch shut off and how does it do it?

VSA stands for Vehicle Stability Assist. It helps to keep cars handling correctly during cornering, particularly if the system’s sensors detect understeer or oversteer. It’s especially useful when different wheels have different amounts of grip, a situation that would normally lead to skidding or plowing. The system will often activate under hazardous conditions caused by weather, a loose road surface, or the car being driven too fast for the corner it’s attempting. VSA can also help to maintain smooth acceleration on slippery terrain or steep gradients. The technology works by automatically changing the engine output and applying each wheel’s brakes individually, improving traction and keeping the car under closer driver control.

@@swerne01 so for example, i have some issues on my abs system, that causes the vsa is always off, this has nothing to do twith the awd or 4x4 system right? i don't know much about it, when i lift up the car and put Drive, the 4 wheels spin... i don't know if that's a good signal :D

@@James0208. Correct the VSA, ABS, has nothing to do with the AWD dual pump system. I explained the VSA in an above comment.

If you're asking what year mine is ? It's a 2006 the very last of the Gen 2 . The AWD system is similar in the 2008 model (Gen 3).
